Chapter 5 - THE IMPOSSIBLE HAPPENS

Sophie's POV

Sophie runs because she needs to feel like herself again.

She stripped off her clothes in the woods behind her cabin and shifted into her wolf form while her body was still shaking from what happened in the council room. The rejection is supposed to break her. Every wolf knows that. You reject a mate bond and the broken connection tears you apart from the inside. You spend the rest of your life feeling half empty.

But Sophie doesn't feel broken.

She feels free.

Her paws hit the forest floor and she takes off running faster than she's ever run in her entire life. The wind rushes past her face. The trees blur into dark shapes on either side of her. Her heart pounds in her chest like it's trying to escape her ribcage. Every muscle in her body burns and it feels incredible.

She's never felt this strong before.

Sophie runs through the deep forest where nobody else goes. Where the trees are thick and the ground is wild and untamed. She jumps over a fallen log that's probably twice as tall as she is. She's never jumped that high before. She doesn't even think about it. Her body just does it like it's been waiting for her to ask.

She runs faster.

The rejection bond should be pulling her back toward the pack house. Should be pulling her back toward Jaxon. That's what happens when you reject a mate bond. The connection tries to drag you back to the other person because the pull is supposed to be stronger than your own will.

But this is different.

The bond isn't pulling her back. It's just there. Like a thread connecting her to something far away. And instead of controlling her, it's actually making her stronger. Like rejecting it unlocked something inside her that was always supposed to stay locked.

Sophie can feel her body changing as she runs. Her senses are getting sharper. She can smell the forest from miles away now. Every scent is clear and separate and distinct. The pine trees. The wet earth. The deer sleeping three valleys over. The owl hunting somewhere in the darkness above her head.

She can hear everything.

The heartbeats of small animals in their burrows. The wind moving through the branches. The water running in a stream she can't see but can hear clearly like it's right in front of her face. Her hearing has always been good but this is something else. This is something that shouldn't be possible.

Sophie runs in circles around the oldest trees in the forest. Trees that have been there for hundreds of years. She's never been able to run this fast. She's never been able to move with this kind of precision and control. Every movement feels perfect. Every step feels intentional.

She's becoming something.

Something her mother never got to be.

Something the mate bond would have taken from her if she hadn't been brave enough to say no.

Sophie runs toward the cliff that overlooks pack territory. The one place where she goes to think about things. Where she watches the pack below and reminds herself that she's separate from all of that. That she has a life that's just hers.

She shifts back into her human form on the edge of the cliff and just breathes.

Her whole body is alive. Every nerve ending is awake and aware and vibrating with power. Her skin feels like it's humming. Her heart is still racing from the run. Her muscles are tired but not in a bad way. In the way that comes from pushing yourself to your absolute limit and discovering that your limit is so much higher than you ever thought it was.

Sophie looks down at pack territory spread out below her. The pack house with its lights glowing in the darkness. The residential buildings where families are sleeping. The training grounds where she spent so many mornings pushing herself harder than anyone else.

She made the right choice.

She rejected her destined mate and instead of breaking her, it made her powerful.

Instead of controlling her, it freed her.

For the first time in her life, Sophie feels like she's actually chosen her own path. Not the path her mother chose. Not the path the pack expects her to choose. Her own path. Built on her own terms. With her own power.

She's never felt like this before. Strong. Capable. Free.

A wolf howl cuts through the darkness.

Sophie's entire body goes rigid.

That's not just any wolf howling. That's Jaxon. That's the Alpha. That's the male whose mate bond she just rejected. She can feel him through the bond even from miles away. Can feel his confusion and his obsession and his desperate need to understand why she said no.

The bond is still there.

She thought rejecting him would break the connection but it didn't. It just changed it. The bond is still pulling between them like an invisible thread that won't snap no matter how hard she tries to cut it. It's still connecting her to him even though she told him no in front of everyone who matters.

Sophie takes a step back from the cliff edge.

The rejected bond is starting to pull her in his direction. Not like it's controlling her. More like it's asking her. Begging her. Calling to her across the darkness with a howl that sounds like pain and confusion and obsession all mixed together.

She could follow it. She could run back to the pack house and find him and maybe figure out what's happening between them. Maybe let the bond pull her under like it's supposed to.

But if she does that, she becomes her mother. She becomes small and dependent and defined by another person's love. She becomes everything she swore she'd never become.

Another howl echoes through the forest. Closer this time.

Jaxon is coming for her.

He's not stopping. He's not giving up. He's coming to find her because the rejected bond is pulling him just like it's pulling her. Because rejecting the mate bond didn't break it. It just changed it into something neither of them understands.

Something dangerous.

Something that won't let them go.

Sophie looks at her hands and realizes they're shaking. Not from fear. From the knowledge that she just did something that's going to change everything. She rejected her destined mate and now that mate is going to come find her. Is going to try to understand her. Is going to make her choose between her freedom and her heart.

And somewhere deep inside, the rejected bond is pulling her toward him like it's the only thing that matters.

Sophie turns away from the cliff and runs back into the forest. Not toward the pack house. Away from it. Into the deep woods where the trees are thick and the darkness is complete and maybe she can figure out what's happening to her before Jaxon finds her.

But even as she runs, she can feel the bond pulling at her like a hook through her heart. Can feel him getting closer. Can feel that this is only the beginning of something bigger and more complicated and more dangerous than she ever imagined when she stood up in that council room and rejected her destined mate.

She's in real trouble now.

The best kind of trouble.

The kind she can't run away from no matter how fast she goes.
