The morning came quietly, but not peacefully.
Zara woke with a heaviness pressing against her chest. It wasn't from sleep—it was something unresolved. She sat up slowly, scanning her room as though expecting something to have changed overnight.
Nothing had.
But everything felt different.
Her thoughts drifted back to Lucien.
The way he looked at her. Not just seeing her—but studying her. As if she mattered in a way neither of them fully understood.
Zara stood and walked to the mirror, staring at her reflection.
"Why does it feel like something is coming?" she murmured.
No answer came.
At the university, the atmosphere felt off.
Whispers moved through groups of students, low but constant. Zara noticed it the moment she stepped onto campus.
Something was wrong.
"Zara."
She turned to see Mia waving her over.
"You heard?" Mia asked as Zara approached.
"Heard what?"
"There's talk about Lucien."
Zara's expression remained neutral. "What about him?"
Mia leaned closer. "People are saying he's not who he claims to be. That he's hiding something."
Zara frowned slightly. "People always talk."
"Maybe," Mia replied. "But this is different. Someone said they saw him arguing with a man in a black car yesterday."
Zara's attention sharpened.
A man in a black car.
Her mind quickly replayed Lucien's behavior from the previous day—the brief tension he tried to hide.
So he was dealing with something.
"Be careful around him," Mia added quietly.
Zara nodded, though her thoughts had already drifted elsewhere.
Later, Zara stood near the library entrance, waiting.
She didn't know why she had come.
Or maybe she did.
Lucien had asked her to meet him here at exactly 3 PM.
And she had shown up.
The wind moved gently through the courtyard as students passed by in groups, their lives continuing normally.
Zara felt oddly separate from it all.
Then she saw him.
Lucien walked toward her with his usual calm presence. Controlled. Quiet. But today, something about him felt different.
His eyes.
They were more guarded.
"Zara," he said as he approached.
"You asked me to come," she replied.
"Yes."
They paused.
Lucien gestured slightly. "Let's talk somewhere private."
Zara followed him to a quieter spot beside the building.
Once they stopped, silence settled between them.
"You didn't bring me here just to stand around," Zara said.
Lucien exhaled softly. "No."
Zara crossed her arms. "Something's wrong."
"Yes."
"Is it about the rumors?"
Lucien gave a faint, dismissive smile. "People always talk."
"Then what is it?"
Lucien stepped slightly closer and lowered his voice.
"You are being watched."
Zara blinked. "What?"
"Not by everyone," Lucien continued. "But by someone who has taken an interest in you."
Zara let out a small breath. "That sounds dramatic."
"It's not," he said calmly. "It's reality."
Zara studied him, realizing he meant every word.
"Why would someone watch me?"
Lucien held her gaze.
"Because of me."
Silence followed.
Zara's expression shifted. "Explain."
Lucien's jaw tightened briefly.
"My presence here is not as simple as it seems. The people connected to my world don't ignore things easily."
Zara processed that slowly. "So being around you puts me at risk?"
"Yes."
"And you're still here."
Lucien didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
Zara looked at him carefully. "You could have stayed away."
"I could have."
"But you didn't."
"No."
Zara's voice softened slightly. "Why?"
Lucien met her eyes.
"Because you matter more than I expected."
The words lingered.
Zara felt her heartbeat steady, stronger than before.
"You're putting me in danger," she said.
"Yes."
"And you're still here."
"Yes."
Zara exhaled, looking down briefly before meeting his gaze again.
This wasn't simple.
Nothing about this was.
"Then tell me everything," she said.
Lucien nodded.
"Not here."
Zara raised an eyebrow. "Of course not."
"Tonight," Lucien added.
"Where?"
"My place."
The words hung in the air.
Zara didn't respond immediately.
Not because she was afraid—but because she understood what it meant.
Trust. Risk.
And something else she couldn't yet define.
"Alright," she said finally.
Lucien gave a small nod.
"Be careful until then."
Zara smirked faintly. "You're the one who said I'm being watched."
"That's exactly why," Lucien replied.
They stood in silence for a moment longer.
Then Zara turned and walked away.
Lucien watched her leave.
And for the first time in a long while…
He wasn't sure if bringing her closer was protection.
Or the beginning of something neither of them could control.
