Chapter 21 - Inglorious history

We didn't get much time to argue about how insane the suit was as the other Gangers heard me pop the brain of their buddy here and come running.

"Eins, zwei, drei, vier, funf, sechs. And that's the way the cookie crumbles." I said with a grin as these dumbasses ran around the corner into the entrance room without a lick of caution.

Honestly I almost felt bad for putting a bullet through their foreheads, almost. The only one that got a different ending was the one smart enough to wear a helmet, him I shot in the throat.-

Naturally my next move was to order my bug to go give the rest of these blue wearing idiots the last scare of their lives. At least the ones in this building anyways. I could have sworn there was a slight sign of eagerness from the bug but that was probably nothing. The system rules were quite clear that my summons had no personalities or souls after all. With the bug off to kill the rest of these bastards I got to work looting these seven freshies.-

The getting was GOOD too! Twelve sticks of dynamite with various wick lengths, a crowbar, two varmint rifles, two ten millimeter pistols and a flamer along with about a thousand NCR money and a hundred and thirty eight caps. Not to mention all the ammo that they had as well for the weapons.

'Ugh, I was hoping to put this off but I seriously can't carry all of this at once.' I thought with a sigh as I had the system push through the update with the storage upgrade.

{System update in progress. Please standby. 1% 2% 3%}

I stared at the message speechlessly as it showed the update going on in real time. To be blunt I sorta expected it to just do that whole "nonresponsive for an indeterminate amount of time" trope I kept reading about in my past life. -

I certainly wasn't going to complain about having an actual progress bar telling me roughly how long I had to wait. It was also going by quite quickly, about ten percent per minute in fact. I just shrugged and pilled all of my nonmonetary loot to the side before walking over to behind the hotel's reception desk and pulling out a bobby pin.-

"What are you doing?" Adam asked confused.

"Picking this doors lock." I said casually.

"Why?" Adam asked still confused.

"Because there's more loot behind it that I want. There is a whole bunch of stuff that requires picking to get at across the wasteland." I said as I bent the pin open at a ninety degree angle and stuck it in the keyhole.

"So you are going to break in and steal it?" Adam asked disapprovingly.

"It's not stealing if it doesn't have an owner anymore. It's salvage." I said as I carefully wiggled the internal tumblers while lightly pressuring the lock so they stuck after they were lifted.

"How do you even know how to do this anyways? Not exactly a skill that an honest person would learn is it?" Adam asked seeming to accept my previous answer.

"Honest? I just killed six people without blinking an eye, the fuck made you think I was an honest person? I fall quite proudly on chaotic neutral thank you very much. Used to make quite the chunk of cheddar robbing rich folk and those locks put these ones to shame. Needed a whole ass kit for those.... and got it." I said as the doors lock clicked open and the door went with it.

"So you are a thief!" Adam said accusingly.

"WAS, past tense. This isn't stealing since the stuff's got no owners anymore. Besides it's not like I hurt anyone when I robbed them, I have some standards. I always targeted those houses that were rarely lived in or that dirtbag corporate asshats used for their mistresses. By the time the owners even realized they'd been robbed I was so long gone that finding me was pretty much impossible." I said with a chuckle.

"What about surveillance or security?" Adam asked curiously.

"Please, I was a professional. I wore a mask, carried a localized EMP box on my belt and never hit a house that had dogs or actual guards. Days of preparations and scouting before I moved. Of course luck is always a factor, it's why I got out of the business and moved to a regular job. Sure the money was fucking terrible but it wouldn't get me shot if I did it." I said as I walked into the little storage room.

"You got caught?" Adam asked picking up on a key detail.

"Yeah. The job was going smoothly at first. I slipped into one of those corporate sleeves side places quiet and clean. Grabbed the guys spare watches, jewelry and the art. I was on my way out when I got unlucky. Patrolling neighborhood security happened to pass by right as I was leaving. You probably don't know but those types DON'T try to catch thieves, they shoot them. Took three rounds to the back as I ran, didn't even get the loot for the trouble either. After that I just didn't have it in me anymore, close calls with death tend to have that effect on you I suppose." I said with a bitter tone as I started looting the storeroom.

"Why didn't you just use your magic then?" Adam asked confused.

"Didn't have it at the time. In truth I only recently got it." I said as I carried my handful of loot to my pile and left it there before going back for the small safe on the wall.

The safe proved even easier to open as for some gods awful reason the lock on it was of even worse quality than the one on the door. In the safe was a three fifty seven revolver handgun and a few boxes of ammo for it along with a few stacks of prewar paper money.-

The gun I took but I knew better than to think the prewar money held any actual value beyond as a material for paper or burning. Other than that the storage room had some prewar chems and a few stimpacks that were flat-out one of if not THE most broken things in this entire world. You see stimpacks caused temporary accelerated regeneration. The effects lasted only a minute but in that time your bodies regeneration factor was increased over a hundred times.-

Wounds just vanished before your eyes at the low low cost of a small portion of time being shaved off your lifespan with each use. Considering the things allowed you to survive downright lethal injuries that was hardly a large price to pay. By lethal I mean like the sort of stuff that isn't immediately fatal but WILL kill you within minutes otherwise. Like getting shot or puncturing an artery, one stimpack later and while you aren't exactly at peak health you'll live at least.
