Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Signs of Change

Chapter 3: Signs of Change

Morning came slowly.

A dim, fractured light spread across the sky, dissolving the remnants of the strange aurora that had haunted the night. The unnatural colors faded, but the unease they left behind lingered in the air like a quiet warning.

Kael opened his eyes.

For a few seconds, he didn't move. His body lay still against the rough wooden platform he had built, his mind caught between exhaustion and awareness.

Then reality returned.

"…Still alive," he muttered.

The words felt heavier this time.

He pushed himself up, wincing slightly as soreness spread through his muscles. His arms ached from gathering resources, his hands still rough from splinters and strain. But the pain was manageable.

Alive meant moving forward.

His eyes scanned the clearing.

The lake remained still, its surface reflecting the pale sky like glass. The large tree stood firm beside him, unchanged but no longer ordinary in his eyes.

Nothing had attacked during the night.

That alone felt like a small victory.

"…Day two," Kael whispered.

He reached for his spear, gripping it tightly as he stood.

"Yesterday, I survived," he said under his breath. "Today… I prepare."

His gaze shifted toward the forest.

"I need to know what's out there."

---

Kael moved cautiously beyond the clearing, stepping into the deeper parts of the floating island.

The forest greeted him with a different presence than before.

It wasn't silent anymore.

It was alive.

Faint sounds echoed between the trees—distant rustling, subtle movements, things shifting just out of sight. Nothing approached him directly, but the awareness of being surrounded settled heavily on his mind.

"…Good," he murmured. "At least now I can hear something."

But that didn't mean safety.

He moved slowly, placing each step carefully, his eyes scanning both the ground and the shadows ahead.

It didn't take long before he found the first sign.

Tracks.

Kael crouched low, examining the disturbed soil.

"These weren't here yesterday…"

He focused.

"Appraisal."

A faint overlay appeared in his vision.

---

Creature Trace: Wild Wolf

Status: Early Mutation Phase

Threat Level: Moderate

---

Kael's expression tightened.

"Wolf…"

A predator.

Fast.

Dangerous even before mutation.

He stood and moved on, his senses sharper now.

Not long after, he found another set of tracks.

Larger.

Heavier.

The ground had been pressed deeply under their weight.

"Appraisal."

---

Creature Trace: Wild Boar

Status: Early Mutation Phase

Threat Level: Moderate–High

---

Kael let out a slow breath.

"…That's worse."

A boar wasn't just dangerous—it was relentless.

And if it had already begun mutating…

He didn't want to imagine it charging at him.

Still, he continued forward.

A third trace caught his eye—thin, winding lines that cut across the ground and disappeared beneath a rock.

"Appraisal."

---

Creature Trace: Mountain Snake

Status: Early Mutation Phase

Threat Level: Unknown

---

Kael stepped back slightly.

"Unknown is never good."

He tightened his grip on the spear.

"So this island isn't empty…"

It was occupied.

And everything on it was changing.

---

As he ventured deeper, the forest itself began to shift.

At first, it was subtle.

Leaves that shimmered faintly.

Branches that twisted in unnatural patterns.

But soon, the changes became undeniable.

Kael stopped in front of a cluster of plants.

Their leaves glowed faintly—veins of soft light pulsing beneath the surface.

"Appraisal."

---

Name: Luminous Fern

Status: Early Mutation

Property: Emits faint energy glow

Use: Unknown

---

"…Glowing plants," Kael muttered.

He reached out slightly, then hesitated.

"No… not yet."

He wasn't desperate enough to experiment blindly.

But the deeper he went—

The stranger things became.

The light dimmed, even though it was still morning.

The air grew thicker, heavier, almost suffocating.

Kael slowed.

His instincts were screaming.

"Something's wrong…"

Then he saw them.

Vines.

Dark, twisted vines wrapped around nearby trees, their surfaces marked with faint, pulsating patterns. They weren't still.

They moved.

Barely noticeable—but enough.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kael's grip tightened.

"…Appraisal."

---

Name: Parasitic Vine

Level: 2

Type: Mutated Plant

Ability: Life Steal (Low)

Threat Level: Moderate

---

"…It steals life."

The words sent a chill through him.

A plant… that consumes life.

The vine shifted slightly, reacting to his presence.

Kael took a step back instinctively.

"This isn't normal evolution…"

It was something else.

Something darker.

He stared at the vine, his thoughts racing.

Then—

He remembered.

The connection.

The tree.

Nature Sense.

"…If I can feel it…"

A dangerous idea formed.

"…Can I take it?"

Slowly, cautiously, Kael stepped closer.

His hand extended.

"…Link."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

It hit him.

A violent surge flooded his mind.

Hunger.

Desperation.

Endless, relentless will to survive.

Kael's breath hitched as the vine's instinct crashed into him. It didn't think. It didn't hesitate.

It consumed.

It drained.

It existed only to take.

"…Enough!" Kael pulled back suddenly, breaking the connection.

He staggered backward, heart racing violently.

"That thing…" he whispered. "It's not alive like us…"

It was something else entirely.

Something primal.

Something dangerous.

A notification appeared.

---

Skill Acquired: Life Steal

Talent Effect: Unification Applied

Skill Upgraded → Life Transfer (Dark)

---

Life Transfer (Level 1):

A dark-type ability allowing the user to absorb and redistribute life energy.

Drain vitality from targets

Restore self or transfer to linked targets

Efficiency increases with level

---

Kael stared at the screen.

"…I took its ability."

His breathing slowly steadied.

"This power…"

It wasn't natural.

But neither was this world anymore.

---

As he moved away from the deeper forest, Kael noticed something else.

Insects.

Not small ones.

Larger.

Ants the size of fists.

Beetles with hardened shells.

Their movements were sharper. More deliberate.

More dangerous.

"…They're evolving faster than I thought," he muttered.

His expression darkened.

"Seven days…"

Now he understood.

"That's not time to prepare…"

"It's a deadline."

After that—

Everything would complete its mutation.

And whatever came after…

Would be far worse.

---

Kael turned back toward his clearing, moving faster now.

When he reached the lake, its still surface greeted him once again.

But it didn't feel peaceful anymore.

It felt temporary.

He looked at his tree.

Then at the surrounding area.

His mind began calculating.

"…I need defenses."

Higher ground.

Better structure.

Protection.

"Barriers… traps… stronger weapons…"

His grip tightened around the spear.

"And I need to master my skills."

Linking.

Nature Sense.

Life Transfer.

They weren't just abilities.

They were his only chance.

Kael exhaled slowly.

The system screen flickered faintly.

The countdown continued.

Relentless.

Unforgiving.

"…Six days left," he murmured.

His eyes hardened.

"Then I don't waste time."

He turned toward his base, already planning his next moves.

Because when the mutation ended—

Only the prepared would survive.
