Chapter 2: First Steps of Survival

Kael stood at the edge of the floating island for a long moment, the cold wind brushing past him as the reality of the shattered world slowly settled in his mind.

Panic had its place.

But survival came first.

He took a deep breath, forcing his thoughts into order. "Think… don't panic," he muttered under his breath. "If I want to live… I need food, water, and shelter."

His grip tightened slightly.

"And I need to get stronger."

With that, he turned away from the cliff and began moving deeper into the island.

The terrain was uneven, scattered with broken wood and cracked earth. The silence pressed heavily around him, unnatural and suffocating. No birds. No insects. Nothing.

It felt wrong.

As he walked further, the forest slowly grew denser, the trees taller and darker. Time blurred as he moved cautiously, scanning his surroundings.

Then—

The trees opened.

Kael stepped into a wide clearing and stopped.

At its center lay a lake.

He approached slowly, eyes narrowing.

The water was unbelievably clear.

So clear that he could see straight to the bottom—smooth stones resting beneath the surface, pale and undisturbed. Faint light from the fractured sky shimmered across it, making it look almost like glass.

"…Too clean," Kael murmured.

Then he saw movement.

Fish.

Dozens of them.

They glided silently beneath the surface, their bodies shifting with the light. Some were small, others larger, moving deeper in slow, cautious patterns.

"…Food," he whispered, relief flickering across his face.

He crouched, dipping his fingers briefly into the water.

Cold.

Clear.

Real.

But he pulled his hand back quickly.

"…Don't trust it yet."

Still, this was exactly what he needed.

Water. Food. Open space.

And nearby—

A large tree stood at the edge of the clearing, its thick trunk and wide branches offering natural protection.

Kael nodded.

"This will work."

---

He began gathering materials immediately.

Broken branches. Fallen wood. Loose stones.

It was slow work.

Hard work.

"This is going to take forever…" he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow.

Then he paused.

"…Linking."

Kael placed his hands on two branches and focused.

"Connect…"

A faint thread of energy extended from his hand, wrapping around the wood.

The branches trembled—

Then fused.

Kael's eyes widened. "It worked…"

A faint notification appeared:

---

Linking Proficiency Increased

---

A small smile formed.

With renewed energy, he continued, binding branches together. Slowly, a crude platform took shape around the tree—elevated just enough to offer some safety.

Not perfect.

But enough.

Next—

A weapon.

Kael found a straight branch and a jagged stone.

"This should do…"

"Link."

The energy wrapped around them.

They fused.

A crude spear.

He tested it.

"…Good enough."

---

His eyes drifted back to the lake.

Time to hunt.

Kael crouched at the edge, spear ready.

"Focus…"

A fish swam closer.

He struck.

Splash.

Miss.

"Damn it…"

Again.

Miss.

Again.

Nothing.

Frustration built as the fish scattered.

"Think… don't rush…"

He steadied his breathing.

Waited.

Watched.

Then—

A slower fish drifted close.

Kael's grip tightened.

"Now."

He thrust—

Splash.

A pause.

Then resistance.

"…Got you."

He pulled back.

A fish struggled weakly on the spear.

Kael exhaled deeply. "I did it…"

+1.0 EXP Gained

"Food… finally."

---

But he didn't stop there.

"I need more than one option."

He moved into the forest, searching carefully.

Wild fruits hung from certain trees—small and unfamiliar. He collected only a few.

Mushrooms grew near damp roots. Some looked safe. Others… not.

He avoided the strange ones.

After digging for some time, he found a few edible roots buried beneath the soil.

"Not great… but it'll do."

His arms ached, but he now had options.

---

Returning to the tree, his gaze lingered on it.

"…Linking connects living things too…"

Slowly, he placed his hand on the bark.

Closed his eyes.

"Link…"

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

A faint presence.

Deep.

Ancient.

Alive.

Kael's breath slowed.

He could feel it—not thoughts, but existence itself. A quiet, steady awareness.

Then—

The connection snapped.

Kael staggered back.

"What… was that…"

A notification appeared:

---

Skill Unlocked: Nature Sense (Level 1)

---

Nature Sense (Level 1):

A passive ability allowing the user to sense life and natural energy.

---

"I… felt it…"

He looked around.

The forest no longer felt empty.

It felt alive.

---

Night came quietly.

Too quietly.

Kael sat beneath the tree, spear beside him, a faint fire flickering weakly. Shadows stretched unnaturally across the ground.

No sound.

No movement.

"…I don't like this."

Then—

A faint glow touched his face.

He looked up.

And froze.

The sky had changed.

Waves of light stretched across the darkness—flowing, shifting, alive. Colors he couldn't name moved like a living veil across the heavens.

An aurora.

But unnatural.

It pulsed.

Like a heartbeat.

"…This wasn't there before."

The lights reflected across the lake, turning it into a mirror of shifting colors.

Beautiful.

But wrong.

Kael tightened his grip on the spear.

"This world…" he whispered. "It's really gone…"

The aurora flickered again.

A silent reminder.

"Seven days…" he murmured.

His eyes hardened slightly.

"I'll survive."

No matter what this world had become.
