Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: “Bickering Hearts”

I kicked off my shoes as I entered the apartment, relieved to finally be home. After the day at Rivera Corp, my brain was fried, and my nerves were on edge from Ethan's subtle attention.

"Lara, you're home early," Ethan said, appearing from the kitchen with a cup of coffee in hand. He looked… calm, as always, but there was that faint smirk on his lips.

"Yeah, early-ish. Needed a break from the chaos of work," I replied, tossing my bag onto the sofa.

He raised an eyebrow. "Chaos?"

"Yes! Chaos," I repeated dramatically, plopping onto the couch. "People staring, whispers, subtle touches… your little gestures that make me lose my mind."

Ethan chuckled softly. "Subtle touches? You mean when I saved you from spilling coffee yesterday?"

I groaned, throwing a cushion at him. "Exactly that! You make it look normal, but it's NOT! I'm flustered all the time, and it's unfair!"

He caught the cushion mid-air, smirking triumphantly. "Unfair? Me? I'm just following the contract rules."

"Oh yeah? Which rule is that?" I shot back, pointing a finger at him. "Rule #27: Always make Lara's heart race!"

Ethan laughed, shaking his head. "I don't remember that rule in the contract. Did you write it yourself?"

"Maybe I did!" I exclaimed, throwing my hands up. "Because apparently, you're a master at breaking boundaries without even trying."

He walked closer, tilting his head as he studied me. "Breaking boundaries? Lara… you seem to be enjoying it more than you'd admit."

I felt my cheeks heat up. "I—No! That's not true!"

"Sure," he said, smirking knowingly. "Sure."

We stared at each other for a moment, the playful bickering hanging in the air, but beneath it was an undeniable tension. The air felt charged, thick with the unspoken words and feelings neither of us wanted to admit.

I rolled my eyes, looking away, pretending to focus on the TV. But Ethan's presence was too close, too comforting, too… distracting.

Finally, he crouched down in front of me, teasing but gentle. "You know, Lara… this contract thing… it's harder on you than on me, isn't it?"

I swallowed, feeling my heart pound. "Maybe," I whispered, unable to hide it completely.

His eyes softened, and for a brief moment, the teasing vanished. "I'll try to make it… easier. For both of us."

I blinked, surprised by his sincerity. "Thanks… I guess."

He stood, stretching casually. "Now, let's call it a truce for today. No more bickering… until tomorrow."

I groaned but couldn't help laughing. "Fine. Truce… for now."

As I watched him move into the kitchen to prepare dinner, I realized something: this playful, chaotic energy between us wasn't just about pretending. It was real. Emotional. And dangerous—for both our hearts.

Contract marriage. Rules. Boundaries.

Yet somehow, I was already addicted to the chaos of Ethan Rivera.
