I remained seated beneath the cold night sky long after Ivy disappeared behind the curtains of her room.
My gaze stayed fixed on her window even after the lights went out completely, my fingers resting lazily against the edge of the chessboard while the evening wind moved quietly through the garden.
Resting.
That was what she should be doing after everything her body had endured. Yet somehow, even knowing she was finally asleep, my mind refused to settle.
Weak people usually disgusted me, yet Ivy's fragility did something far more dangerous, it made me want to protect her before the world destroyed her completely.
Then suddenly another face forced itself into my thoughts.
