Chapter 14 - Hidden Gambit

(Lee keeps gazing at Eun with affectionate eyes; seeing this, Kang begins to feel jealous.) Lee: Are you alright, Eun? (Eun steps out of his arms.) Eun: Yes, I'm fine. Thank you. Miss CHIRWOMAN : Are you blind? Can't you see? (Turning toward Kang.) And what exactly were you doing inside with her that she came running out like that? (Ignoring Miss Kang's remarks, Kang looks visibly annoyed.) Eun: It's nothing like that, Miss Chairwoman. We were just discussing the presentation. Lee: It's quite alright, Miss Kang. She just bumped into me by accident. Eun: Thank you, Mr. Lee. We'll be going now, Miss Chairwoman and Mr. Lee. Come on, Won. (She takes Won's hand, and the two of them leave.) Mr. Kang: How did you end up here, Mr. Lee? Lee: Yes, Mr. Kang, I've come here to meet with the Chairman. Miss Kang: Do you know my son? (Annoyed, Kang turns his face away.) Kang: Miss Kang, how many times have I told you? Stop calling me "son"! Miss Kang: (Pointing at Kang) Why are you saying all this in front of everyone? You *are* *my* son—so why shouldn't I call you by that name? (Witnessing all this, Lee smiles faintly to himself and thinks...) Lee: (To himself) So, it seems nothing has changed between these two. Not yet, anyway. (Park approaches Kang and tries to reason with him.) Park: Kang, calm down. No one else should find out about this. Just calm down. Kang: Fine, but I don't want to talk to *you*, Miss Kang. Park: Mr. Lee, why do you need to meet with the Chairman? Mr. Lee: This is a business matter. It would be excellent if you were present as well; we can discuss everything right there, and you will be fully informed. Park: Alright, let's go. The Chairman is currently in his cabin. Kang: Fine, let's go. But—there is absolutely no need for *you* to be there, Miss Kang. If you come, I won't go inside. Mr. Lee: Miss Kang, please accept my apologies. I don't know what is going on between the two of you, but it would be best if you didn't come, as Mr. Kang's presence there is absolutely essential. Please, I hope you will understand. Miss Kang: (Resentfully) Fine, I won't come. You two go ahead. Mr. Lee & Park: Let's go. (They... all head toward the Chairman's cabin.) Miss Kang: "How long is he going to keep treating me like this? I am his mother! I've tried to reason with him so many times, but no... *Hmph*." [Cut]

INT. CHAIRMAN'S CABIN — DAY (Everyone is seated on the sofa.) Chairman: Huh? I'm truly surprised—how did you end up here on business? Mr. Lee: Yes, Mr. Chairman. I have made a decision, and this decision will be beneficial for both of our companies. Mr. Kang: What exactly have you come up with? Chairman: What do you mean by "beneficial for the company"? Mr. Lee: Allow me to explain. I want to collaborate with your company. This would propel our company to the number one spot, and both of us would reap significant profits. Everyone knows that our two companies are bitter rivals; if we were to join hands like this, it would generate a great deal of public interest. It would also boost our publicity. So, this would be a tremendous move—wouldn't you agree? Mr. Kang: (Standing up) No. We have no desire to work with you—no matter how profitable it might be. You may leave. Mr. Lee: You are being too hasty. At the very least, give it some thought. Mr. Kang: I don't need to think about it. I simply do not want to work with you. Chairman: Wait, Kang! You are acting without thinking. Sit down. Mr. Kang: Dad, but... Chairman: I said wait, and sit down! (Kang sits back down on the sofa.) Mr. Lee: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. At least *you* gave this proper consideration. Chairman: Yes, I like the idea. It will benefit both our companies. I accept your proposal. Mr. Kang: Dad, there is absolutely no need for this! Chairman: Why don't you understand? Just think of how much profit this will generate for us! Mr. Park: Yes, Mr. Kang. This really is a great opportunity; you should accept it. Mr. Kang: (Sighing in defeat) Fine. I accept. Mr. Lee: (Happily) Thank you, Mr. Kang! Now we will be working together. I am truly very excited to collaborate with you. Chairman: Indeed. Mr. Lee: Alright, I'll take my leave now. We shall be meeting regularly from here on out. (Just as Mr. Lee starts to leave, the Chairman stops him.) Chairman: Wait, Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee: (Stopping) What is it, Mr. Chairman? Chairman: Yes—come to the office tomorrow; I need to introduce you to the staff. Mr. Lee: Ah, certainly—I will definitely be there. Very well then. (Smiling to himself) Lee: Just as I planned. (And he leaves.) Mr. Kang: I'm heading to my cabin now, Dad. Chairman: Alright, you may go. (Kang leaves, and Park follows him out.) Park: I'll be going as well, Chairman. Chairman: Yes. By all means.[Cut out]

(Eun and Won are sitting at their desks, chatting with each other.) Eun: (Thinking to herself) Why would Lee come here? The senior employees were saying he would never work with this company... so why *did* he come here? Won: Yeah, he told us at the party that his dad is a competitor of this company. (Surprised) He didn't come here because of some feud, did he? Eun: No, Lee wouldn't do something like that. (Just then, Lee walks over toward them. Seeing this, the other employees look on in surprise, and Lee begins talking to both of them.) Employees: (Whispering amongst themselves) Does Mr. Lee actually know Eun and Won? Isn't that amazing? Lee: Hi, Eun and Won. Sorry, I couldn't say anything in front of Ms. Kang earlier. Eun: It's okay. By the way, how did you end up here? Won: Yeah, tell us! You said you were never going to work with this company, so how did you get in? I couldn't talk to you like this in front of Ms. Kang, but since no one else is around right now, I can speak freely. Eun: (To Won) Even though he's our friend, we're at work right now. The other employees are all watching us. Lee: It's okay, Eun—it's fine. But I'm not going to tell you two just yet. You'll find out tomorrow—consider it a surprise! Eun: A surprise? What is it? Please tell us now! Lee: Sorry, guys, but I'm not going to tell you. You'll find out soon enough. (Just then, Mr. Kang and Park arrive. Seeing Lee with Eun and Won, they stop at the doorway. Kang glares at them.) Park: Why have you stopped here? Kang: (Thinking to himself) How can they be laughing and chatting so casually right in front of everyone like that? Park: (Looking at them) Oh, so you stopped because you were watching *them*? Have you started to take a liking to Eun? Kang: (Irritated) No! Absolutely not! I don't like her at all. I don't love anyone, and I never will. You know everything about Hanu—how can you even suggest something like that? I was only watching because I don't think Lee is here just to work for the profit. He has an ulterior motive entirely. I would never agree to this under normal circumstances, but I am doing it solely for Dad. Park: Yes, I know about Hanu. But how long are you going to remain alone? And stop thinking about Lee. No matter why she came back, you need to focus on yourself and move on. If you can do anything for the Chairman, then surely you can move on for his sake. Kang: (Angrily) No! Never! I don't even want to discuss this! (He storms off in anger.) Park: Kang, wait... How long is he going to remain consumed by those wounds? ... (He walks away.) [Cut] Lee: Alright, we'll catch up later. I'm off now. Eun: Okay, bye! Won: Bye, Sir Lee! (Lee smiles.) Lee: Yes, bye, Employee Won! (He leaves, and both of them go back to their respective work.)
