Chapter 70 - chapter 70

At the Hoxton apartment, Elsa cooper sat at the table, a pen in hand and a notebook open before her. With the new car she and Lucy now shared, they could go anywhere. The realization sparked ideas, she could use the money Jordin had given her to buy a house, open a small business of her own, building a path toward financial independence.

A quiet smile touched her lips as she recalled how Lucy would run to the window, squealing and gushing like an excited child every time she laid eyes on their new car. It warmed Elsa's heart. She was finally shedding the heavy weight of her past mistakes with Jordin, moving forward with a hard-earned lesson etched into her soul: she would never sell herself to any man for a hefty check. Focused and determined, she leaned over the pages, jotting down fresh business concepts ready to be tested and brought to life.

Meanwhile, miles away in her house, Catelyn sat on the sofa, a quiet contentment settling in her chest. During a phone call earlier that evening, Silas had mentioned celebrating his birthday with his family.

"How did your birthday go?" she had asked, hoping that he had enjoyed it.

"It was good. Celebrated it with the family, everyone came around," Silas had replied, his voice drifting as he walked down the hallway of his home.

"That's so wonderful. It must have been a huge celebration," Catelyn said, genuinely glad that he was surrounded by his loved ones.

"Yes, it was," Silas answered, touched that she cared enough to ask.

The conversation stretched on comfortably. Though a lingering guilt whispered in the back of Catelyn's mind—she knew she had played a part in fracturing things between them—she was nonetheless happy he had experienced the warmth of family. Yet, she couldn't help but wonder if there was an underlying bittersweetness to it; she knew Silas loved her entirely, and without her there, the celebration couldn't possibly be complete.

At her own apartment, Jane spent the afternoon sorting through her wardrobe. She carefully packed a selection of pretty yet eventful outing dresses alongside polished professional work attire, ensuring she had everything necessary for the trip ahead. Traveling with Lauren in a week suited her just fine—her career was stable, and life was moving at a steady, manageable pace.

Switzerland

The transition to the exquisite residential villa in Switzerland was seamless. At 2:13 PM, Jane stepped through the grand entrance, dressed simply in a blue shirt and black trousers while carrying her luggage. The property, owned by Lauren, was a private sanctuary featuring a terrace, a garage, and a sprawling garden—an ambiance Jane instantly appreciated.

A short distance behind her walked Lauren, resplendent in a faint yellow, knee-length outfit, while Diego—the resident caretaker who managed the villa—handled her bags. Absorbed in a phone call with a friend in Switzerland, Lauren glanced over at Jane, who was managing her own luggage toward her designated quarters.

"You should have some rest, Jane. We'll be having dinner later from the English restaurant," Lauren instructed smoothly.

"Yes, Lauren," Jane replied, her dark hair neatly secured in a ponytail.

Lauren appreciated Jane's innate polite demeanor, Lauren offered a considerate follow-up. "Check around if you need anything. The fridge is stocked with water and treats."

"Thank you, Lauren," Jane said, her gratitude genuine.

With a dismissive wave, Lauren turned back to her call. "I'm at the lounge if you need me," she added, before heading off to reconnect with her friend and field pending business calls.

Jane made her way to her spacious room. Featuring a grand king-sized bed, a beautifully crafted wardrobe, a sleek dressing table, and expansive windows flooding the room with brilliant afternoon sunlight—complete with a pristine en-suite bathroom featuring a deep tub—it was an ideal retreat. After a quick game on her phone to decompress, she neatly unpacked her belongings and settled in to rest.

Later that evening, the aroma of a freshly ordered English dinner filled the dining room. Seated across from each other at the wide, spacious table, Lauren and Jane dined on baked turkey and savory sausages served over a bed of creamy, buttery mashed potatoes, generously topped with sauce, accompanied by glasses of fresh juice and water.

Jane lifted her juice glass, taking a refreshing sip. "I'll be going out tomorrow to meet Anastasia, a friend of mine, as well as a few other acquaintances. You don't have to come along," Lauren noted, looking at Jane across the table.

"Okay, Lauren," Jane acknowledged, setting her glass down quietly.

Good, Lauren thought, pleased with the ease of the arrangement. She took another bite of her meal, particularly enjoying the roasted turkey, and asked, "How is the food?"

"It's nice," Jane answered, meeting the older woman's gaze.

With dinner concluded, the two briefly touched upon upcoming business meetings before parting ways. Jane retreated to the sanctuary of her room to rest up, watch television, catch up with her family via phone, and finally get a full night's rest.
