Chapter 58 - Chapter 58

Back in her own living room, the quiet was broken only by the gentle rustle of turning pages. Elsa sat on the sofa, staring down at the crisp white notepad resting on her knees. Across from her, Lucy was utterly absorbed in her novel, her thumb hooked into the spine as she eagerly devoured every word of the chapter.

Elsa pressed the tip of her pen against the paper, systematically drafting a realistic, much-needed list: new clothes, sturdy shoes, everyday jeans, practical dresses, and durable bags. Beneath those basic essentials, she jotted down a smaller, softer list of treats for Lucy—including a gorgeous new dress. She wanted to spoil her sister a little, simply because Lucy was kind-hearted and brought so much light into her world.

Then came the heavier part of her thoughts: the car. She needed to explain how she had managed it. The raw truth was a tangled, exhausting web involving late-night shifts at the club and complicated dynamics with Jordin, but she had smoothed down all the rough edges into a neat, palatable story. She had told Lucy that she had picked up extra hours and caught a lucky break with a wonderfully generous patron at the library who tipped her handsomely. It was a convenient fiction, a protective buffer keeping the darker, more draining realities of her life safely out of sight. She wasn't ready to untangle that messy truth for Lucy just yet—not when Jordin still felt like a complicated secret she didn't yet know how to name.

Elsa cleared her throat softly, breaking the quiet. "Hey, sis?"

Lucy immediately lowered her book, marking her page with a finger, her bright eyes turning full of curious attention. "Yeah?"

"So... remember how we've been talking about transportation? I might have... well, I managed to save up. I am buying a car."

Lucy's eyes widened, a flicker of genuine shock crossing her features. "A car? Wow, that's incredible! But... where did you get the money for it?" She asked, her mind immediately wondering if someone had stepped in to help her sister.

"Well, I had a good patron at the library who really likes me," Elsa explained smoothly, keeping her voice steady. "She has been giving me generous tips lately, and between that and my two jobs, it added up. I realized I could finally afford one."

"Oh, wow, that's so good and exciting!" Lucy said, looking warmly at Elsa. "That woman is such a blessing for helping you out with cash like that."

"Yep," Elsa agreed, offering a soft smile, even though the generous library patron was largely a construct of her imagination. Deep down, she truly believed that if you kept pushing forward, life would eventually place the right people in your path. "I suppose some people are just inherently kind."

"Yes, I can't believe we are having a car, Lucy's face lit up instantly, her whole expression blooming into a radiant, unfiltered smile as she spoke. She gasped, dropping her book entirely onto the cushions. "A car? Elsa, are you serious? She looked at elsa who smiled back at her which said her words were true. Oh, my god!" She bounced slightly on the couch, looking at her sister with the pure, unbridled excitement of a child opening a dream birthday gift. "What does it look like? What color is it? Tell me everything!"

Elsa chuckled, her own shoulders relaxing. "Well, it's a dark blue sedan, and it's going to be delivered very soon."

"Oh, my god, this is amazing!" Lucy cheered, her heart swelling with happiness. She could already picture it—the two of them heading out on spontaneous weekend trips, driving down the scenic neighborhood roads with the windows rolled down, laughing and enjoying the fresh air together. Having their own car felt like stepping into a whole new chapter of freedom.

Seeing Lucy so genuinely happy melted the last remaining tension right out of Elsa's shoulders. A soft, grounded smile touched her lips, and watching Lucy's joy felt like a warm breath in a cold room. In that quiet, beautiful second, a fierce resolve settled deep inside Elsa's chest. She wanted to work harder, smarter, and cleaner. She wanted a steady, secure life where they could finally breathe easy. No more messy, draining late-night flings, no more trading pieces of her peace for quick cash. Just her, Lucy, and a real, honest future built from their own hands.

"Can you imagine?" Lucy said dreamily, hugging a throw pillow to her chest. "If only everyone in the world could be as genuinely nice and giving as that wonderful woman from the library. Imagine how much lighter life would be for everyone if people just looked out for each other like that."

"Yes, truly," Elsa murmured, her gaze drifting toward the window as she pictured the quiet neighborhood streets just outside. "It would change everything."

That thought drifted them naturally into a warm, comfortable daydream. Sitting side by side on the couch, they began mapping out their very first minor adventure—nothing too grand, just a peaceful, realistic drive through their own neighborhood once the keys were finally in Elsa's hands. They talked about rolling down the windows on a breezy afternoon, listening to their favorite songs play softly over the radio, and simply soaking in the feeling of having somewhere to go, together. It was a small dream, but to them, it tasted like absolute freedom.
