Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Bed Bound Hostage

Claire marched aggressively over to the side of my bed, her eyes scanning the mattress like a hawk looking for a field mouse. She looked right at me, completely oblivious to my terrifying, pants-less predicament.

"Luke, honey, get out from the bed," Claire ordered, gesturing broadly with her hands. "Stand up. We need to strip the sheets, lift the mattress, and search it properly. It could be hiding under the pillows or near your legs."

I swallowed a massive, dry lump in my throat. A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck.

Get out of bed? I thought, absolute terror gripping my soul. I don't have any pants on! If I stand up, this blanket is falling off, and the jig is entirely up! I will be exposed!

"Uh... Mom," I started, forcing a nervous, slightly high-pitched chuckle that sounded incredibly fake. I gripped the blanket so tightly my fingers began to cramp. "Don't worry about it. I don't feel any lizards in here. Really. I think that thing is already out of the bed. You all can relax! False alarm!"

"Luke Dunphy, don't be ridiculous," Claire argued, her maternal stubbornness kicking into high gear. She put her hands on her hips. "Lizards like warm places! It could be right next to your leg right now! Now get up before it bites you!"

"It's not going to bite me! I'm perfectly safe!" I argued back, pressing myself deeper into the wooden headboard, refusing to move even a single inch. "I'm a heavy sleeper! If it comes back, I'll just roll over and crush it! Let's just go to sleep! I'm so tired from football!"

"Stop arguing and stand up!" Claire reached forward, her fingers grabbing the edge of the blanket near my knee, preparing to yank it entirely off the bed.

"Mom, no, wait—!" I panicked, my eyes widening in pure, unadulterated horror as I felt the fabric start to slip.

"Right there! Catch it!"

Alex's voice pierced the tense air like a gunshot, completely shattering the standoff between me and Claire.

Alex was standing near the center of the room, her arm extended, pointing a dramatic, trembling finger directly toward the slightly open window on the far side of the room.

"Yes! Yes, there it goes!" Alex yelled loudly, committing to the performance of a lifetime. "It's going away! It's climbing out the window sill!" She quickly ran over to the window, acting like she was desperately trying to spot it in the darkness outside.

Phil, who was still hovering nervously near the door, immediately used this as his golden ticket to escape.

"Oh, it's near the window? Making a break for the outside?" Phil asked, backing up even further into the hallway until he was practically standing in the next room. "Good! Let it go back to nature! Circle of life, everyone! We shouldn't interfere with the ecosystem! Job well done, team!"

Claire immediately let go of my blanket—saving my life for the second time tonight—and rushed over to the window to join Alex. Haley cautiously tiptoed into the room, peering over her mother's shoulder with a disgusted grimace.

"Where is it? I don't see anything," Claire squinted into the dark Californian night, pushing the window open a bit wider to peer down into the bushes. "Are you sure it went out, Alex?"

"Where did it go, weirdo?" Haley asked, looking at Alex suspiciously, trying to spot the imaginary reptile.

Alex just gave a highly convincing, helpless shrug. She adjusted her glasses and stepped back from the open window. "I don't know. We can't see anything in the darkness out there. But it definitely crawled over the ledge. Maybe it's on its way to the neighbor's yard."

Claire spent another full minute checking the curtains, shaking them out vigorously just to be absolutely sure, before she finally let out a defeated, tired sigh. She turned around and faced the room, dusting her hands off.

"Okay..." Claire declared, her shoulders slumping slightly as the adrenaline left her system. "Since there isn't anything here, and Alex saw it go outside, the problem is solved. Everyone can stand down. The house is secure."

The collective tension in the room instantly evaporated.

Alex, playing the part of the traumatized, embarrassed victim perfectly, looked down at her shoes and rubbed her arm sheepishly. "Um... Mom, Dad... I'm really sorry for making you so worried about this. I know it's a stupid thing, fearing up and screaming over some stupid lizard."

Phil immediately stepped back into the room, his 'cool, protective dad' confidence fully restored now that the imaginary threat was officially gone. He walked over and wrapped a comforting arm around Alex's shoulders.

"Hey, don't apologize, sweetie," Phil comforted her gently, his voice full of warm sincerity. "It is totally okay to be scared of creepy crawly insects and reptilian invaders. They move way too fast, they have weird eyes, and that's just unnatural! Fear is a completely healthy human response."

Claire walked over and kissed the top of Alex's head, smoothing her dark hair affectionately. "Your dad is right. Anything you need, or if you ever feel scared, you shouldn't hesitate to call for us. That's what we're here for."

Even Haley, who usually thrived on her siblings' misery, softened just a fraction. She crossed her arms and offered a rare, semi-supportive snark. "Yeah, well, next time just don't scream so loud. I thought someone was getting murdered. But... good job not letting it lay eggs in Luke's hair or something gross."

I felt the need to join the conversation to keep up the completely innocent facade. I tightened my grip on my blanket and offered a lazy, sleepy smile from the bed.

"Yeah, thanks for taking the bullet, Alex," I chimed in smoothly, playing my part. "If that lizard had stayed on my face, I probably would have inhaled it in my sleep. You saved me a terrible midnight snack."

Claire chuckled tiredly, shaking her head at my joke. "Alright, enough excitement for one night. Haley, go to bed. Phil, let's go. Luke, try to keep your window screen closed from now on so we don't have any more visitors."

"Will do, Mom.," I nodded politely.

After a few more brief chats and complaints about how late it was, Phil, Claire, and Haley finally filed out of the bedroom. Phil pulled the door closed behind them, the latch clicking shut with a final, satisfying sound.

The room was suddenly plunged back into semi-darkness, illuminated only by the faint glow of the moonlight and the red numbers of my digital alarm clock.

I let out a massive, shuddering breath, letting my head fall back against the headboard. Crisis averted. I survived.

But then, I noticed the silence in the room was a bit too heavy.

I opened my eyes and looked forward.

Alex hadn't left.

She crossed her arms over her chest, tapping her index finger against her elbow.

Oh boy, I thought, swallowing nervously as a bead of sweat rolled down my temple. Here comes another drama.
