Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Final Threat

I sat there, looking at my thirteen-year-old sister. Wow, I thought, genuinely amazed by her persistence. She is still holding onto that classroom thing. That algebra problem completely shattered her worldview. She's like a dog with a bone. She is after my overall secrets, and she's using my absolute worst moment as leverage to get them.

For a second, I considered just giving in completely. It was the lazy route. Just say 'yes' and let her do whatever she wanted so I could go back to sleep.

But then, my nineteen-year-old pride kicked in. No. I should be a man about this!!

I thought seriously. I might be lazy, but I am not going to be a complete hostage in my own bedroom. If I let her walk all over me now, she will think I'm easy prey forever. A lazy king still needs to set boundaries for his kingdom.

I pulled the blanket entirely off my lap, revealing that I was, indeed, wearing shorts now. I crossed my legs, sat up completely straight, and let my goofy, panicking expression drop.

I stared straight back into her eyes. The atmosphere in the room shifted. I wasn't the scared little brother anymore; I was a negotiator sitting across the table.

"Okay," I said, my voice dropping an octave, becoming calm, steady, and entirely serious. "You can come in here anytime. You can hang out, you can study on my floor, and you can watch me do whatever you think I'm doing. But..."

Alex's triumphant expression hardened just a fraction. She hadn't expected me to push back. She tightened her jaw, waiting for my next words.

I leaned forward slightly, resting my elbows on my knees, holding her gaze without blinking. "...Don't touch anything without my direct permission. Not just my comics or my games. Anything. Books are okay, but only if you ask first, and if I say 'don't', you don't. Period."

I raised a second finger, laying out my absolute bottom line. "Also, do not interfere in my private life. If I am sleeping, Il will sleep. If I am playing a game, you don't talk to me until I pause it. If I am doing something weird, you observe quietly if u come here. You do not dictate my schedule."

I raised a third finger, my eyes narrowing slightly. "And lastly, the most important rule. You do not inform Mom, Dad, Haley, or anyone else about anything you see in here. You act completely normal outside this room. What happens in the 'Luke Cave' stays in the 'Luke Cave'. If you break that rule, the deal is off, and I will gladly take the punishment from Mom just to make sure you never get the satisfaction of knowing my secrets."

The air in the room grew heavy. It felt like a silent, psychological war was being waged in the space between us. A clash of auras.

Alex stared at me, clearly taken aback by the sudden shift in my demeanor. She was used to Luke being a pushover, someone she could easily outsmart and manipulate with big words. But right now, I wasn't backing down. I had drawn my line in the sand.

She stood there, her brilliant mind rapidly processing the terms, weighing the pros and cons. She wanted to know my secrets so badly it was driving her crazy. She knew that if she pushed too hard, I might actually call her bluff and let the whole house burn down just out of spite.

A full minute passed. The only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioning.

Finally, a tiny, almost imperceptible smirk appeared on the corner of Alex's mouth. She liked the challenge. She liked that I was actually engaging with her on a somewhat intellectual level.

She gave a single, firm nod.

She raised her right hand toward me.

I looked at her hand, let out a slow breath, and raised my own hand. I grasped her palm. We shook hands firmly, sealing the midnight treaty.

"Okay," Alex said softly, dropping her hand and taking a step back. "The terms are logical. And they are enough. We have a deal."

I sighed internally, feeling the massive weight of the tension finally lift off my shoulders. Thank god. I can finally get some peaceful sleep. A minor setback, but at least my room is still somewhat mine.

I moved to lie back down on my pillows, ready to dismiss her for the night.

But as Alex turned around and placed her hand on the brass doorknob to leave, she paused. She looked back over her shoulder, the lenses of her glasses catching the yellow light of the lamp, giving her a slightly menacing, anime-villain glow.

"But don't forget about the terms of this deal, Luke," Alex said, her voice dripping with sweet, terrifying poison. "Because if you try to lock me out, or if you break your end of the bargain... I will spout any nonsense about you to Mom and Dad. And because you are the 'weird' one, they will believe me completely, and they will turn against you."

She gave me one final, victorious smile. "Goodnight, big brother."

Click. She opened the door, stepped out into the dark hallway, and closed it softly behind her.

I was left sitting in the quiet, lamp-lit room, completely frozen in place.

FUCK! I screamed internally, my hands grabbing the sides of my head in pure, unadulterated frustration.

This little... manipulative... genius brat! I ground my teeth together, taking deep breaths to try and calm myself down. Calm down, Luke. Calm down. You're a nineteen-year-old adult. Don't let a middle schooler get under your skin.

But it was impossible. My heart was racing again. She had literally just reminded me that she held the nuclear launch codes to my peaceful life. Even after the treaty, she couldn't resist dropping one final, heavy threat to remind me who was actually in charge of the situation.

I fell backward onto my mattress, staring up at the dark ceiling, feeling utterly defeated.

Damn it, I groaned aloud to the empty room, throwing an arm over my eyes. She is still warning me. I can't take any rest. This lazy life is going to be so much harder than I thought.

My perfect, relaxing Webnovel reincarnation experience had officially been hijacked by my overachieving little sister. And the worst part was? I had practically invited her in.

I reached over and aggressively clicked off the bedside lamp, plunging the room back into darkness. Tomorrow, I had to deal with morning football practice, school, and now, my very own personal, highly suspicious stalker.

The Dao of Laziness was truly the hardest path to cultivate.
