"Maybe I should leave, or get another face," he said at long last after we spent so much time thinking in circles and still couldn't come up with anything solid.
The thought of him leaving disturbed me more than everything else we had talked about that entire time.
Because what if he never came back?
Besides, disappearing abruptly wasn't even a good move. If he vanished now, especially after everything that had happened recently, wouldn't even people at school suspect?
"You can't," I said almost immediately. "Maybe you should just keep pretending to be a teacher," I continued. "Keep up the story about once wanting to become a boxer and training for it before you stopped. If one day my parents asked those questions, maybe those lies could buy us time."
I paused before speaking again, trying desperately to think through every possibility.
"I mean… if my parents don't have something that can track you through DNA or anything like that, then maybe that can work."
