The ferry slowly approached the island as the morning sunlight danced across the calm sea.
Jay stood at the bow, her hair blowing in the warm breeze.
"It's still hard to believe," she whispered.
Beside her, Keifer smiled.
"You've said that five times already."
"Because it still doesn't feel real."
The boat finally docked, and Keifer stepped off first before offering her his hand.
"Welcome home."
Jay looked at him.
"…Home?"
He nodded.
"This isn't my island anymore."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Instead of answering, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
"Open it."
Jay carefully unfolded the papers inside.
Her eyes scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then the signature.
"…Keifer."
Her voice was barely audible.
"This…"
She looked at him, completely speechless.
"You…"
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"The ownership transfer was finalized yesterday."
Jay blinked.
"You transferred…"
"The island."
"…To me?"
He nodded.
"It's yours now."
Jay stared at the papers again.
"But… Keifer…"
"You once told me that you've never really had a place that felt like it belonged to you."
She remembered saying that months ago.
Back when she still struggled to accept that people genuinely cared about her.
"You deserve one."
Her eyes slowly filled with tears.
"You bought me…"
She looked around at the white beaches, the crystal-clear ocean, the cottage overlooking the sea.
"…An island?"
Keifer laughed.
"When you say it out loud, it sounds a little excessive."
"A little?"
"I may have gone overboard."
"You think?"
He shrugged innocently.
"I wanted to give you something no one could ever take away."
Jay laughed through her tears.
"You're impossible."
"I've been told."
She suddenly wrapped both arms around him, nearly knocking him backward.
"You idiot."
"I know."
"You absolute idiot."
"I know."
"You spent who knows how much money…"
"I did."
"…On an island."
"I did."
"…For me."
"I did."
She buried her face against his chest.
"I don't even know what to say."
"You don't have to."
They stayed like that for several minutes, listening only to the waves.
Later that afternoon, they explored every corner of her island.
Every few minutes Jay would stop.
"…It's really mine."
Keifer laughed.
"Yes."
Five minutes later…
"It's actually mine."
"Yes."
Another few minutes…
"I own an island."
"I noticed."
She grinned.
"I'm going to name every coconut tree."
"There are hundreds."
"I know."
"You'll run out of names."
"I'll start numbering them."
Keifer shook his head with a smile.
"My girlfriend owns an island and her first plan is to name trees."
"They're my trees."
"I can't argue with that."
As evening approached, they climbed the small hill overlooking the beach.
The cottage sat peacefully below them.
Jay rested her head on Keifer's shoulder.
"You know what my favorite part is?"
"The beach?"
She shook her head.
"The cottage?"
"No."
"The ocean?"
"No."
He looked at her.
"Then what?"
She smiled softly.
"You."
Keifer's ears turned slightly pink.
"I can buy you an island, but somehow one sentence from you embarrasses me."
She laughed.
"Good."
He gently intertwined their fingers.
"I didn't give you this island because I wanted to impress you."
"I know."
"I gave it to you because I wanted you to have somewhere that will always be yours."
Jay looked out at the endless ocean.
For so many years, she'd felt like she belonged nowhere.
She'd been judged for her past.
Feared.
Misunderstood.
But now…
She had friends who became family.
A future waiting for her.
A university she'd be attending with the people she loved.
And an island she could call home.
She turned toward Keifer and kissed him softly.
"Thank you."
He smiled against her forehead.
"Welcome home, Jay."
She looked around one last time before smiling to herself.
"Our home."
Keifer chuckled.
"I thought it was your island."
Jay slipped her hand into his.
"It is."
She squeezed his hand.
"But home isn't a place."
She looked into his eyes.
"It's wherever we're together."
Keifer smiled, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, they sat in comfortable silence, watching the sky turn shades of orange, pink, and purple—content that, for once, life was wonderfully peaceful.
