Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The First Tremor

The ground shook again before sunrise.

Kai woke up fast because the whole camp was moving.

Lira was already on her feet.

She said "The big Quake is starting. We need to get everyone to the safe underground rooms."

Mira ran into the room holding a new stack of glowing cards.

She said "I stayed up all night making these. Quake Survival Cards, Healing Cards, and one special 'Kai's Calm Voice' card for when you start hearing the gods again."

Kai stood up and felt the nine Echoes inside him wake up calmly.

He said "I am ready. Let us help the others."

The camp was in chaos.

People were running with supplies while the ground kept shaking. Purple light from the sky flashed brighter than before.

Elder Voss shouted orders from the center of the camp.

He said "Move the wounded first! Seal the outer gates! Kai, stay close to the inner circle."

Kai, Lira, and Mira worked together.

Kai used shadow step to move quickly and carry heavy supplies. Lira used her silver threads to lift fallen stones and guide people. Mira threw her new cards to create safe glowing paths on the ground.

One card exploded with soft light and Mira shouted "Safe Path Card! Follow the glow!"

A young awakened girl tripped because the ground cracked under her feet.

Kai appeared beside her in a blur and caught her before she fell.

He said "Hold on. We are almost inside."

The girl looked at him with wide eyes.

She said "You are the Echo Thief. Are you going to take my power?"

Kai shook his head and smiled gently.

"No. I am here to help you. Keep your power. Use it to stay safe."

They reached the underground rooms just as a stronger tremor hit.

The walls shook and dust fell from the ceiling.

Mira handed out her cards to the scared people.

She said "These will help you feel calmer. Throw one if you get hurt. It is my special Healing Card."

Lira stayed close to Kai and said "The god fragments inside you are still quiet. Keep breathing slow. Do not let the Quake tempt you to collect."

Kai nodded because he could feel the small pull.

Many people were awakening all around them, and new Echo signals appeared everywhere.

The ground shook harder.

A loud crack sounded from above, and part of the ceiling started to fall.

Kai reacted fast.

He mixed stone skin and shadow step, then pushed the falling rocks away before they hit anyone.

Mira cheered and said "That was perfect! I am making a 'Kai Saves Everyone' card right now."

Lira smiled but kept her focus.

She said "The Quake is getting stronger. We need to stay down here until it passes."

Hours passed underground.

The tremors came in waves. Sometimes the ground shook so hard that everyone held onto the walls.

Kai sat with Lira and Mira in a quiet corner.

He said "I can feel so many new Echoes being born outside. It is hard not to go out and collect them."

Lira took his hand and said "That is why you are strong. You are choosing not to. Every time you say no, the god fragments become weaker."

Mira leaned against Kai's shoulder and said "And I am here to distract you. Want to hear my plan for the ultimate Kai card collection? I will have one for every voice and every punch."

Kai laughed because Mira always knew how to make him feel lighter.

He said "You are crazy. But thank you."

A big tremor hit suddenly.

The underground room shook violently, and a crack appeared in the ceiling.

Elder Voss shouted "Everyone stay calm! The supports are holding!"

Kai stood up fast.

He used wind dash and stone skin together and pushed against the cracking ceiling to hold it up.

His arms burned from the effort.

He said "I can hold it for a while. Get everyone to the deeper rooms!"

Lira sent her silver threads to reinforce the ceiling beside him.

Mira threw every support card she had left, and they exploded with stabilizing light.

The ceiling stopped cracking, but Kai's body was shaking.

The small god fragments inside him stirred because the Quake was feeding them power.

Nyxar whispered weakly, "Take the new Echoes outside. Become stronger."

Veyra added softly, "Just one. It will not hurt."

Kai gritted his teeth and said "No. I am in control."

He held the ceiling until everyone moved to the safer deeper rooms.

When the last person was safe, he stepped back and the ceiling held on its own.

Mira ran to him and said "You did it! My hero card is going to be legendary."

Lira checked him for injuries and said "You used the power without losing control. I am proud of you."

The tremors continued for hours.

Kai stayed awake with Lira and Mira because he wanted to make sure everyone was safe.

In the quiet moments between shakes, Mira told funny stories about her card collection.

She said "When this is over, I am going to make a full series. 'Kai vs Gods Volume 1' will be the rarest card ever."

Lira smiled and said "You make everything feel less scary, Mira."

Kai looked at both of them and felt warm inside.

He said "I do not know what I would do without you two. You kept me human when I was becoming something else."

The ground shook one last strong time.

Then everything became quiet.

Elder Voss came to them and said "The first wave of the Quake has passed. But this was only the beginning. The real big one is still coming."

Kai stood up and looked at the group of people they had protected.

He said "We kept everyone safe today. That is what matters."

Mira held up a new card she had made during the tremors.

She said "This one is special. It is called 'We Survived Together.' I made one for each of us."

Lira took the card and smiled.

She said "We will need many more like this before the end."

Kai looked toward the exit of the underground rooms.

The sky outside was still cracked and glowing, but they had survived the first wave.

He felt the small god fragments inside him stay quiet.

The nine Echoes waited peacefully.

Kai said quietly to his friends, "The big one is coming soon. But whatever happens, we face it together."

Mira grinned and raised her cards.

Lira nodded and took Kai's hand.

The camp had survived the first tremor.

But everyone knew the real storm was still on the way.
