Theon opened his eyes. The anger was there, simmering just below the surface, but it was tangled up with something else. Something that felt a lot like grief.
"I'll talk to him."
Lara nodded. "Thank you."
She stood, and Theon watched her move toward the door. She was graceful. Composed. Everything a Luna should be. No wonder Ryan must have chosen her—no wonder he'd hidden her away like something precious.
At the door, she paused.
"I'm sorry."
Theon looked at her. "For what?"
"For putting you in this position."
Theon forced a small smile. "You didn't put me here."
She held his gaze for a moment longer before leaving. The door clicked shut.
The smile disappeared from Theon's face. He sat completely still, his hands resting on the desk. Then, slowly, his right hand curled into a fist. His knuckles went white. The tremor started in his fingers and traveled up his arm, a fine vibration that hummed through his entire body.
Ryan had a wife. A pregnant wife.
