Chapter 62 - The Training Amplifier

Chapter 62: The Training Amplifier

Serie had initially expected Yumesaki to ask for rare, ancient, or perhaps even world-shattering spells. She hadn't expected him to settle for these three.

In her eyes, they weren't particularly rare—in fact, they were quite ordinary. Perhaps the mind-control magic was slightly less common, but to her, it was still no big deal.

"Have you really thought this through? I can give you a chance to choose again."

"No need," Yumesaki said, shaking his head. "I feel these three are very suitable for me."

"In that case, reach out your hand."

Serie stepped toward Yumesaki and looked up at him. Yumesaki extended his right hand.

"I shall pass these three spells onto you." Serie grasped his hand, and using Transfer Magic, she bestowed the knowledge directly into his mind.

Transfer Magic was an exceptionally rare skill possessed by Serie. By using it, one could instantly grant a learned spell to another person. However, the cost was that the caster would lose the spell themselves and would need to relearn it from scratch. Of course, to Serie, these three spells were trivial. It wouldn't even take her a few days to master them again.

Yumesaki, on the other hand, had successfully "learned" the spells without any effort thanks to her help. But learning them was one thing; actually casting them was another.

The prerequisite for casting magic was Mana. Without Mana, no matter how great the spell, it was useless. Fortunately, Serie was a literal ancestor of the magical arts. When it came to the basics, like extracting Mana, she could explain it with profound depth. Even a fool could learn to extract Mana under her tutelage.

According to Serie, there were two primary methods for extracting Mana.

The first was converting one's own life force into Mana. The second was absorbing Mana from the atmosphere and refining it into one's own.

Both methods had their pros and cons, but the vast majority of Mages used the second. It was stable and safe, making it the mainstream practice. The first method was considered a "heretical path" because the conversion was irreversible. The more Mana you created, the faster your life force withered, leading to an early grave. It was a path usually reserved for those driven by deep-seated grudges or fanatics who didn't value their own lives. It yielded quick results, but at a terrible price.

Most Mages looked down on that path.

Furthermore, Serie informed Yumesaki of a third method—the heresy among heresies: draining the life force of others to convert into one's own Mana. This magic was born from combining the first method with Necromancy. Back in the Mythical Era, it was created by a Mage specializing in the dark arts. However, shortly after its creation, that Mage was killed.

Incidentally, the person who killed him was none other than Serie.

Hearing this, Yumesaki began to piece things together. In this world, Elves lived for a very long time. Serie herself was an antique from the Mythical Era. If that Necromancer had created a spell to drain life force, whose life force would be the most "efficient" to harvest?

Humans? Humans only lived for about a hundred years. Even if you drained them dry, the gains were minimal. Sure, a Necromancer could go for quantity over quality, but killing massive amounts of humans would quickly draw the ire of other Mages and lead to an execution.

Therefore, the best targets were Elves.

That was why Serie had hunted the man down. You dare target my kin to harvest Mana? If I don't finish you, who will? Even though Elves rarely gathered and were often emotionally distant, it didn't mean they were free pickings for a Necromancer. His death wasn't a tragedy in the slightest.

A short while later, after learning the Mana extraction technique, Yumesaki asked Hashirama to carry the unconscious Minato and Kanae back to their rooms to rest. Then, he began his first attempt at absorbing Mana from the atmosphere.

And then, something magical happened.

The moment Yumesaki began the process, the Golden Gate within his body vibrated slightly. Suddenly, Mana so thick it was almost liquid surged through the gate and flooded Yumesaki's body. The gate was drawing Mana from the world of Frieren and funneling it directly into him.

Yumesaki felt his Mana reserves swell at a rate visible to the naked eye.

Incredible. He hadn't expected the Golden Gate to have a function like this. He had vastly underestimated this treasure; it wasn't just a way to travel between worlds, it was a literal "Training Amplifier." The speed of this Mana accumulation was beyond his wildest dreams.

"Are?"

At the same time, Serie's brows shot up as she let out a surprised exclamation. In her perception, Yumesaki had started with zero Mana. But the moment he began his first extraction, the Mana inside him ballooned with terrifying speed. It was a growth rate that defied all logic.

"Enough. Stop right there."

Just as Yumesaki was losing himself in the intoxicating surge of power, Serie's voice rang in his ears. Immediately after, a surge of incredibly potent Mana entered his body, forcefully but gently halting his cultivation.

Yumesaki blinked, startled. He opened his eyes and looked up at Serie.

She was looking down at him as he sat cross-legged on the ground. "I'm not entirely sure what just happened with you, but that's enough for today."

She added a stern explanation, "Your Mana grew too fast. It has already far exceeded your ability to control it."

Yumesaki's heart tightened. He tried to move the Mana within his body. Sure enough, just as Serie had warned, he couldn't control it properly. It wasn't that he couldn't move it at all, but rather that it felt nothing like moving his own limbs. It was clumsy, heavy, and difficult—like a small pony trying to pull a massive, overloaded carriage.

Seeing his struggle, Serie offered a tip: "Don't try to move all of it at once. Start with a tiny bit."

Taking her advice, Yumesaki focused on controlling just a small fraction of the Mana—roughly a tenth of the total volume. This portion responded to his will. While it still wasn't perfectly smooth, it was significantly better than trying to wrestle with the whole mass.
