Chapter 56 - Chapter 55 Those without Cursed Energy cannot see Curses

Technically, if one has the right tools and Cursed Tools, they could function as a Sorcerer. But I would never recommend it. Lacking Cursed Energy means having no resistance to curses. Unless one is born with a Heavenly Restriction that trades energy for physical prowess—and I doubt such a person exists in this era—it is suicide.

"Those without Cursed Energy cannot see Curses, nor can they exorcise them. That is the fundamental law of the world. Therefore, I must be the one to do it. I ask that you accept this."

The adults grimaced in unison. Not a single one looked ready to nod in agreement. Even Himiko, sitting in the chair beside me, looked displeased. Do not look so worried. I sighed and pulled her closer, stroking her hair to soothe her. There, there. Smile for me.

"Hey, hey, 'Destroy Girl'! Isn't there some kind of equipment to see them? Like… sunglasses or goggles, y'know?"

This English teacher is as noisy as ever. "Present Mic," was it? And I told you to stop with that nickname. Do not call me an incarnation of destruction. How rude.

"I am personally working on such items, but they are nowhere near completion."

"You can actually make them?!"

"I am in the middle of a trial run. But let me be clear: mass production is impossible. They aren't finished, and I haven't the slightest idea if they will be ready in a year or ten."

I have been working on Cursed Tools for over a year, and there is still no sign of them being completed. At this rate, it might take a decade. Cursed Tools are simply like that.

"Unfortunately, I have no innate talent for crafting Cursed Tools. Do not pin your hopes on it; it will only lead to disappointment."

"Maidoki-shoujo," All Might spoke up, "what exactly are these 'Cursed Tools'?"

"They are weapons or items imbued with Cursed Energy. To make them, one needs the energy to begin with."

"So, in the end, everything comes back to Cursed Energy…" Aizawa muttered.

"Exactly. If you wish to do anything about Curses, Cursed Energy is mandatory. And I am the only one in U.A. who possesses it. Someone else might be born with it in the future, but we cannot rely on a 'maybe.' To solve the problem at hand, the Sorcerer currently present must act."

"Is it not possible to see them with a Quirk?"

"It is possible. My mother has a Quirk called Spiritism. She can see them. But that is all—she can only see. She cannot exorcise."

"…I see."

Perhaps there is someone out there with a Quirk that can both see and destroy Curses, but finding them would be a monumental task. And the school cannot stay closed forever while they search. In the end, U.A. has no defense against Curses. Using me is the only logical step.

"Maidoki. During the USJ attack, the thing you fought—that was a Curse, correct?"

"Indeed."

"And the cockroaches were its doing?"

"Yes."

"What is the likelihood of another Curse like that appearing?"

"I cannot say it is zero. But a Curse of that caliber does not appear often. There is no need for extreme alarm."

In the Heian era, it would be different, but in this age, I've only seen a Special Grade once—two days ago. I've seen plenty of Grade 1s, but Special Grades are almost non-existent.

That doesn't mean we can be complacent, however. If the reason I haven't seen them is that they are all being gathered under the villains' control, then we are in the worst possible situation. There is a limit to what I can handle alone. No matter how strong I am, if I am swamped by multiple Special Grades, even I would likely have to trade my life to win.

"For now, may I begin purging the building? If I don't, there is a chance our conversation is being leaked to the villains right now."

"…"

"Forgive me, but I will not wait for your permission. It is a waste of time. From this point on, leave all Curse-related matters to me. My range is limited, but… I will do what I can."

Exorcising every single minor Curse in this massive school will be a chore, but if I dedicate the whole day to it, it can be done. I felt a pang of guilt for dragging Himiko along for the ride. Her time would be much better spent studying than watching me hunt vermin, but safety comes first.
