Chapter 55 - Chapter 54 Of Mice and Malice

The day after the temporary closure, school was canceled once more. The notification arrived just after seven in the morning, right as I was preparing to head out. Curiously, however, I received a separate summons stating that I alone was to attend. With no other choice, I asked Himiko—who was already dressed in her uniform—to act as my guide, and we set off for the school.

When the two of us passed through the school gates, which were devoid of any other students, our homeroom teacher intercepted us and dragged us toward the staff room. Aizawa initially ordered Himiko to return home, but I stood my ground. Given that the villains are clearly targeting me, the possibility of a Curse being sent after Himiko is far from zero. Once I explained this to him, her presence was permitted, though she looked quite troubled by the whole ordeal.

The reason I was summoned was simple: the school administration wanted to consult me regarding countermeasures against Curses. Not a single teacher can perceive these spirits, yet the League of Villains is clearly utilizing them. Furthermore, it seems modern technology is incapable of detecting them.

In short, no matter how much they bolster their physical security, they cannot prevent a Curse from infiltrating the campus. Thus, they required the cooperation of one who possesses Cursed Energy and knowledge of these entities.

I have little choice but to assist. U.A. is home to many children, and allowing them to be slaughtered is a direct violation of my principles.

That aside… this school is run by a mouse. Truly? Is this for real? I nearly exorcised him on sight, thinking he was some sort of rodent Curse.

"…So, Maidoki. Do you have any countermeasures against these Curses?"

I was staring at the mouse-principal when Aizawa's voice pulled me back to the matter at hand. This was the reason I was here. Apparently, they cannot reopen the school until a solution is found.

…Countermeasures, I thought. Honestly, there is only one, though I doubt they will like it.

I glanced at Himiko. She was watching me with such an anxious expression. Peace, girl. I am fine.

"As I told you two days ago, Curses can only be exorcised by Cursed Energy or Techniques. There are exceptions, but as a rule, those without Cursed Energy cannot even see them. Therefore, I shall exorcise them all. I'd like to spend today purging every Curse within the school building, for starters…"

"We appreciate the offer to handle the exorcisms," the Principal chirped, "but no teacher here is comfortable with placing such a dangerous burden on a single student."

I expected as much. From their perspective, they are allowing a child to walk into the jaws of danger. It's only natural they'd hesitate. However, there are no other options. None at all. Thus, my plan remains: I exorcise the current residents, and I handle any new ones that appear or are sent by the enemy. I see no other path forward.

"We should be looking for a way for the teachers to handle Cursed Energy as well," the mouse said. "Is there a method?"

…Good heavens, the mouse spoke again. How bizarre. Why can it talk? Is this also a Quirk? Can animals have Quirks? Truly, this "Quirk" business is quite all-encompassing. And why is it perched on Aizawa's shoulder? Is it his pet?

"There is no such method," I replied. "First of all, you lot have no Cursed Energy. Or rather, you have a pittance of it, but in the context of Sorcery, it is effectively zero."

Generally speaking, if one possesses Cursed Energy above a certain threshold, they can see Curses. To be a Sorcerer, sight is the prerequisite. I'll leave the matter of innate techniques aside for now.
