Chapter 49 - Chapter 48 Concern and Concessions

After the attack by the so-called "League of Villains," things moved at a dizzying pace. I spent hours explaining Cursed Energy and Cursed Spirits to the teachers before Aizawa-sensei finally escorted me home. However, the moment I stepped through the door, a fresh bout of chaos erupted.

Aizawa had seen fit to inform my parents and Himiko about everything that happened at school today—not just the battle, but the fact that I was being specifically targeted by these villains.

As a result, it was decided that I would be placed under hero protection for the foreseeable future. A sensible precaution, one might say. When a child is being hunted by unknown criminals, involving the police and heroes is the standard procedure.

But then Aizawa went further… he spoke of my Cursed Energy and the existence of Curses.

It wasn't that I was intentionally hiding it, but I hadn't felt the need to broadcast it either. I had mentioned it briefly when explaining my technique years ago, but since no one understood, I had simply stopped bringing it up. This time, however, they had no choice but to listen. My mother, who can read the very essence of souls, remained unruffled, but my father and Himiko looked as though their eyes might fall out of their heads.

In short, the current reality was laid bare: I am the only one capable of opposing Cursed Spirits. Everyone else is blind to them and possesses no cursed energy to speak of. Well, that isn't strictly true—they have a pittance of it, but they can neither perceive nor manipulate it.

Regardless.

Aizawa made it clear that in the event of an emergency involving Curses, the heroes and the police would be powerless. If the villains unleashed another creature like that insect, they would be at a total loss. In such a scenario, I would be the only one left to defend myself.

From my perspective, that was the plan all along. To be blunt, I have no need for guards. Anything below Special Grade I can exorcise without breaking a sweat, and a Special Grade is merely a source of entertainment. Still, I understand that for the adults, leaving me without protection would be a dereliction of duty, so I accepted it with a measure of grace.

My father, however, was the first to snap at the teacher.

He was furious. What was the point of a guard who was useless when it mattered most? Did they intend to just watch his daughter die?

I appreciate the sentiment, Father, but they aren't completely useless. They can handle regular villains; it's only the Curses they can't touch. Though, self-defense is a tricky thing in this era. If I use my technique, it counts as an unauthorized use of a Quirk. Registering my technique as a Quirk was likely a mistake in hindsight. Who knows how they will categorize Cursed Energy? If they see it as part of my "Quirk," any use of it becomes a legal headache.

At any rate, the heroes assigned to me aren't entirely worthless—it's just that there are situations where they could be.

My mother said nothing until the very end. She watched us with an expression that seemed to say she had foreseen all of this. And as for Himiko…

Currently, she is clinging to me and refuses to let go.

After Aizawa finally left and I finished my dinner and bath, I returned to my room to find a pale, trembling Himiko waiting for me. The moment I closed the door, she threw herself at me, anchoring herself to my side as if her life depended on it.

"…I'm scared. I know you're strong, Madoka-chan… but still…"

"I am fine. There is no need for such worry."

"…"
