Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Underestimating the Players Too Much?

And so, a great battle began.

They were thrown straight into the final boss, a situation Koze Furukawa had never experienced in a game before.

Onmyoji 2 felt like every battle was serving the narrative.

Yet this approach made the entire story exceptionally tight and focused.

The oppressive presence of Yamata no Orochi, especially when using Yuuki Rei's body, was both eerie and suffocating.

Koze Furukawa's heart twisted with frustration.

He wished he could kill the game's scriptwriter and developers.

The Totsuka-no-Tsurugi became Moriyama Hei's magic sword. With her power, a new system was added: the Sword Spirit System.

This system allowed the male protagonist to unleash devastating skills he hadn't been able to before.

Even so, the group stood no chance against Yamata no Orochi.

Throughout the battle, their health bars remained dangerously low, teetering on the brink of collapse.

After a brief struggle, Yamata no Orochi unleashed a world-ending attack that instantly defeated them all.

Only then did Koze Furukawa realize that this battle was utterly lost.

Moriyama Hei and Asakura Reimu, severely wounded, knelt on the ground, struggling to support themselves, their combat strength completely depleted.

The Sword Spirit, freshly summoned, had transformed into the form of the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, though its radiance had dimmed.

Yuuki Rei, or rather, Yamata no Orochi, let out a wild laugh as she lowered her head to look at Moriyama Hei.

She stood like a queen surveying her dominion.

"Hahaha! Mortal, I'll spare your life today, just because you helped me regain my freedom."

Then her gaze shifted to Asakura Reimu beside him.

A flicker of confusion appeared in her eyes, as if she had seen this girl somewhere before.

But in the next instant, it was replaced by cold resolve.

Yamata no Orochi raised her hand, and a black sword materialized in her right hand. "As for you, descendant of Izanagi, I won't let you stand in my way again."

Thwack!

The black sword pierced Asakura Reimu's chest, and blood erupted.

Nani?!

This is...

Koze Furukawa's pupils trembled. Is the Pokeni producer or scriptwriter insane?

They're pulling the knife so soon?!

But without enough build-up and emotional investment to make players care about the characters, even when they're "killed off," it'll only evoke regret, not heartbreak.

What on earth is Kogahara Tsubakiaki thinking?

Even an ordinary player like me understands this.

After Yamata no Orochi finished its work, it left the area, leaving only Moriyama Hei and Asakura Reimu behind.

"So we couldn't stop it after all?" Asakura Reimu frowned.

A trickle of blood flowed from the corner of her mouth.

Koze Furukawa glanced down and saw a gaping hole in her chest.

The injured Moriyama Hei moved toward Asakura Reimu, struggling to pull her into his arms to heal her.

"It's no use."

Asakura Reimu said with a sorrowful expression.

"Hei, listen to me."

She was already on the verge of death, tears welling up in her eyes.

Asakura Reimu raised her hand and gently caressed Moriyama Hei's cheek.

"I love you."

Huh?

Koze Furukawa couldn't understand where this love was coming from. Was the plot just a mess?

Did Pokeni's reviewers not notice?

Did they fall in love after just one battle?

If so, this kind of love would be hard for players to relate to.

The accompanying visuals were both poignant and heartbreakingly beautiful, tinged with a melancholic wistfulness. Coupled with the moving soundtrack, they evoked an indescribable, faint sorrow.

It seemed as if they were pouring all their strength into performing a dirge.

But that was all it was.

Koze Furukawa frowned, feeling it had gone too far.

How disappointing, producer Kogahara Tsubakiaki. Did you really think good visuals and music alone could move people?

The discomfort he felt wasn't due to any approval of the plot itself, but rather because Asakura Reimu was the daughter of Asakura Haruka and Yuuki Rei. The previous generation's story had shaken him somewhat.

Asakura Reimu hadn't died like a normal human. Instead, she had been torn apart, her fragments ultimately becoming scattered starlight in the cave before vanishing completely.

After recovering a bit of his strength, Moriyama Hei hurried to the mountain shrine with the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi.

As expected, Yamata no Orochi, now possessing Takiya, had already launched its attack on the Onmyōji.

The shrine personnel suffered heavy casualties.

Amidst the swirling snow, the figure of Yuuki Rei—now transformed into Yamata no Orochi—appeared in the air.

Asakura Haruka led his disciples in confronting the beast.

But—

When he saw the beautiful woman he loved and cherished in the sky, he hesitated, unable to make a decision.

Koze Furukawa understood his feelings perfectly. When he played Onmyoji 1 and saw Ling sacrifice herself at the end, his heart had ached just as much.

But now, this was merely Ling's physical shell, not the true Yuuki Rei herself.

The entire Onmyōji group was ruthlessly suppressed. His disciples cried out to Asakura Haruka, telling him that it wasn't the real Ling, begging him to pull himself together.

Just as the group on the snowy mountain was about to be annihilated, the protagonist Moriyama Hei arrived with the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi.

When Asakura Haruka saw the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, he immediately understood—

The reason Yamata no Orochi had returned to the human world was entirely because this guy had drawn the sealing sword.

But there was no time to blame him now. Asakura Haruka rallied his spirits, took the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi from Moriyama Hei, and resolved to seal Yamata no Orochi once more.

At this point, Koze Furukawa deeply felt the developers' ruthlessness.

Ling had already sacrificed herself once; now they were going to kill her again? How cruel.

With the full power of the Great Onmyoji Asakura Haruka and the magical energy of the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, the battle was slightly easier.

After a fierce battle, both sides suffered losses.

They failed to seal Yamata no Orochi, only managing to severely wound it before the creature escaped.

Meanwhile, Asakura Haruka was gravely injured.

With a new catastrophe looming over the human world and Asakura Haruka too weak to act, he entrusted his crucial duties to Moriyama Hei. Before Moriyama Hei departed, Asakura Haruka also taught him the secrets of Shikigami.

Furthermore, Asakura Haruka wished for his daughter to accompany Moriyama Hei.

Their mission wasn't to seal Yamata no Orochi, but to notify Onmyōji across the country and prepare them for the coming crisis.

He also hoped to unite the forces of Kazekage Luo, the high priestess of the Land of the Moon, and use the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi to seal Yamata no Orochi once more.

Daughter?

Koze Furukawa's mind raced with confusion. Didn't your daughter turn to ashes in the cave? Don't you remember?

The thought brought a pang of sadness to his heart.

Just then, as the narrative progressed, a radiant figure appeared in the snow.

She wore a white Onmyōji robe, her hair tied in a beautiful ponytail. Though her face was youthful, her eyes held unwavering resolve.

Could it be Asakura Reimu?

Koze Furukawa's fingers trembled, and he nearly dropped the controller.

Huh?

Asakura Reimu is alive?

Moriyama Hei, carrying the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, descended the mountain with Asakura Reimu.

Though she was the genuine Asakura Reimu, she had no memory of the events that had transpired in the cave. Her relationship with Moriyama Hei was limited to the camaraderie of fellow disciples.

Their clashing personalities led to frequent bickering during the journey.

Yamata no Orochi was unleashing a bloody rampage across the globe, determined to exterminate all Onmyōji.

Many Onmyōji had already fallen victim to this catastrophe.

Behind Yamata no Orochi stood Takiya.

As the plot unfolded, Koze Furukawa came to understand:

Takiya was the princess of the Land of Night, also known as the Land of Oni. For millennia, they had been locked in conflict with the Onmyōji.

However, centuries ago, the Onmyōji had united and defeated the Land of Oni, leading to its downfall.

Now, Takiya sought to harness the power of Yamata no Orochi to restore the Land of Oni to its former glory.

Throughout their journey, they endured countless trials and witnessed countless tragic love stories between humans and yokai.

Moriyama Hei and Asakura Reimu clearly grew significantly during these experiences.

Gradually, feelings of affection began to blossom between them.

From that point on, everything seemed to fall into place naturally.

Even Koze Furukawa, the player watching from beyond the screen, could still feel the sweet and beautiful love between the two of them.

"That's right. Without the baptism of time, how can anyone truly feel a sense of belonging?"

Watching their sweet interaction, Moriyama Hei found himself smiling even through the screen.

During this process, Asakura Reimu's affection level for him soared.

Using the power of Yamata no Orochi, Takiya summoned the spirits of the Land of Night's deceased ancestors, causing its power to rapidly grow.

The Land of Night returned to the human world, plunging the entire world into shadow.

A full-scale war between the Oni Clan and humanity was imminent.

With the help of Suwa, the Great Onmyoji of Kyoto, Moriyama Hei and Asakura Reimu successfully infiltrated the Oni Clan's camp and launched a surprise attack on Takiya.

After defeating her, Moriyama Hei chose not to kill her. Instead, he forced her to witness the mountains of corpses and rivers of blood outside—to see the consequences of her actions.

The screen showed a sky crimson with blood.

Yamata no Orochi commanded the Oni Clan in a brutal battle against humanity. Casualties mounted on both sides, rivers of blood flowed across the ground, and countless corpses piled up in the earth.

Under the crimson moon, everything was so cruel.

How could this be?

Only now did Takiya realize that these ancestors of the Oni Clan, and their living kin, were nothing more than puppets of Yamata no Orochi.

Yamata no Orochi had never truly considered the Oni Clan as equals.

Their clan held no honor whatsoever.

On the contrary, without Yamata no Orochi, the Oni Clan would have had their own paradise and freedom. But once Yamata no Orochi seized control, the Oni Clan became mere sacrifices in her war against humanity.

Having finally understood this, Takiya fully awakened. She wanted to help Moriyama Hei, and together they would seal away Yamata no Orochi.
