Chapter 18 - Chapter 42: The Door That Shouldn’t Exist

The restricted corridor felt different the moment Zein Shoin and Ace Craige stepped into it—not just quieter, but heavier, like the air itself had been sealed away from the rest of the university, untouched by time, untouched by normal movement, and yet filled with something that felt disturbingly active beneath the surface, something that pulsed faintly through the walls like a heartbeat hidden behind layers of steel and concrete, and as Zein walked forward, her steps slowed without her meaning to, her body reacting before her mind could fully process why, because the closer she got to the end of the corridor, the stronger that strange familiarity became, like she wasn't discovering something new but returning to something she had once known and forgotten.

"…this place shouldn't exist," she said quietly.

"It wasn't meant to be found," Ace replied.

Zein stopped in front of what looked like a solid wall.

"…this is it," she said.

Ace frowned.

"There's nothing here," he said.

Zein shook her head slightly.

"…no," she said, "there is."

She stepped closer.

And that's when it happened.

A faint glow appeared across the surface of the wall—

Lines forming where there had been nothing before.

Ace's expression darkened instantly.

"…you triggered something," he said.

"I didn't touch anything," she replied.

"You didn't need to," he said.

Zein stared at the forming structure.

"…it's reacting to me," she said.

"That's not possible," Ace replied.

"…then explain it," she said.

The wall vibrated.

Low.

Deep.

Like something massive shifting behind it.

Ace stepped forward and grabbed her wrist again.

"Step back," he said.

Zein didn't move.

"…no," she said.

"That wasn't optional," he replied.

Zein slowly pulled her hand free.

"…you need to stop doing that," she said.

"Stop what?" he asked.

"Trying to keep me away from this," she said.

Ace's voice dropped.

"…because you don't belong near it," he said.

Zein's eyes hardened.

"…I think I do," she replied.

The glow intensified.

The lines formed into a clear outline—

A door.

Hidden in plain sight.

"…this wasn't here before," Zein said.

"It was," Ace replied.

"…no," she insisted, "I would've seen it."

"You weren't meant to," he said.

The door let out a deep metallic sound—

Unlocking.

Zein's breath slowed.

"…it knows me," she whispered.

Ace's grip tightened again.

"That's exactly why you need to step back," he said.

Zein shook her head.

"…no," she said softly.

The door began to open.

A cold rush of air pushed outward.

Darkness beyond it—

But not empty.

Alive.

"…we don't know what's inside," Ace said.

"…I think I do," Zein replied.

"That's worse," he said.

Zein stepped forward.

Ace moved in front of her instantly.

"You're not going in there," he said.

"…move," she replied.

"No," he said.

Zein held his gaze.

"…this isn't something you can block," she said.

"Try me," he replied.

A sudden surge of energy pulsed from inside the opening—

Stronger than before.

Both of them felt it.

Zein didn't step back.

Ace didn't let go.

"…this is connected to me," she said.

"And that's exactly the problem," he replied.

Zein's voice lowered.

"…or the solution," she said.

Ace went still for a second.

"…you don't know that," he said.

Zein looked past him into the darkness.

"…I don't," she admitted,"…but I know I have to find out."

Another tremor hit—

Stronger.

The corridor shook violently.

Distant screams echoed through the building.

"…we're out of time," Zein said.

Ace exhaled slowly—

Then stepped aside.

But only slightly.

"…I'm not letting you do this alone," he said.

Zein didn't argue.

Because this time—

She didn't want to.

And together—

They stepped into the darkness.
