Chapter 21 - Chapter 45: The Choice That Changes Everything

Everything balanced on a single moment—the unstable energy, the collapsing structure, the thin line between survival and complete destruction—and in the center of it stood Zein Shoin and Ace Craige, both refusing to step back, both refusing to leave, even as the entire underground chamber threatened to tear itself apart around them, because this wasn't just about stopping something dangerous anymore—it was about choosing what mattered more: control… or each other.

"…you need to get out," Zein said, her voice more urgent now as the energy continued to spiral around them.

"No," Ace replied instantly.

"This isn't something you can fight," she said.

"I'm not fighting it," he replied,

"…I'm staying."

Zein shook her head.

"…you don't understand," she said.

"Then explain it," he said.

Zein's voice dropped.

"…this power was never meant to exist freely," she said,

"…it needs a constant anchor."

Ace's eyes didn't leave hers.

"…and that's you," he said.

Zein nodded slowly.

"…yes," she said.

The chamber shook again—

Harder.

More violent.

"…then hold it," Ace said.

Zein's expression tightened.

"…I can't fully control it like this," she said.

"Why not?" he asked.

Zein hesitated—

Then said the one thing she hadn't wanted to admit.

"…because part of me is missing," she said.

Silence.

Ace's gaze sharpened.

"…what part?" he asked.

Zein looked at the core.

"…the part that sealed it," she said.

Another shockwave blasted through the chamber.

The energy surged higher—

More unstable than ever.

"…then we find it," Ace said.

Zein shook her head.

"…we don't have time," she said.

The ceiling cracked above them—

Large sections falling.

Ace grabbed her again—

But this time, not to stop her.

To steady her.

"…then we make time," he said.

Zein looked at him—

Really looked this time.

"…why are you still here?" she asked quietly.

Ace didn't hesitate.

"…because you are," he said.

The answer was simple.

But it hit harder than anything else.

The energy surged again—

But something shifted.

Not outside.

Inside her.

"…this is dangerous," she said.

"I know," he replied.

"…I could lose control," she said.

"I know," he repeated.

"…I could destroy everything," she said.

Ace stepped closer.

"…then I'll stop you," he said.

Zein blinked slightly.

"…you really think you can?" she asked.

Ace's voice dropped.

"…no," he said,

"…but I'll still try."

For a second—

Everything felt still.

Even the chaos.

Zein exhaled slowly.

"…you're impossible," she said.

"And you're not leaving," he replied.

"…no," she said quietly.

The core pulsed again—

But this time—

Less violently.

Zein noticed it first.

"…it's slowing," she said.

Ace looked at the energy.

"…because of you?" he asked.

Zein shook her head slightly.

"…no," she said,

"…because of us."

The realization hit both of them at the same time.

This wasn't just her burden anymore.

It never had been.

The energy stabilized slightly—

Still dangerous—

But no longer on the edge of explosion.

Zein closed her eyes briefly—

Focusing.

"…I can hold it like this," she said.

"For how long?" Ace asked.

Zein opened her eyes again.

"…long enough," she said.

Another tremor hit—

But weaker.

Above them—

The collapse slowed.

Ace exhaled quietly.

"…then we're not done yet," he said.

Zein shook her head.

"…no," she said.

Because now—

They both knew—

This wasn't the end of the problem.

It was just the beginning of the truth.

And whatever came next—

Would be even worse.
