Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30: LITTLE THINGS

CHAPTER 30: LITTLE THINGS

It was strange how quickly people became part of your routine.

At first, they were someone you talked to occasionally.

Then they became someone you talked to every day.

And eventually, without realizing it, they became someone you expected to be there.

Not because they promised.

Not because they had to.

Simply because they always were.

Monday arrived with the usual chaos of school.

The movie outing had given everyone enough material for an entire week of arguments.

Mostly because Kai refused to admit that his predictions had been completely wrong.

"They made no sense."

"They made perfect sense."

"The villain wasn't even the villain."

"Exactly."

"That doesn't help your case."

"It helps spiritually."

Nobody knew what that meant.

Not even Kai.

The lunch table dissolved into laughter.

For a while, everything felt normal.

The group sat beneath their usual tree.

Students moved around campus.

Teachers walked by pretending not to notice everyone eating where they technically weren't supposed to.

The world continued as usual.

Liora listened to the conversation while picking at her lunch.

Mira was telling a story.

Jaden was adding details.

Kai was making everything dramatically worse.

The normal chaos.

Yet every now and then, her attention drifted.

Not completely.

Just for a second.

A thought.

A memory.

A conversation from the night before.

Then she would return.

Nobody seemed to notice.

At least, nobody said anything.

Later that afternoon, the class was assigned a small presentation project.

The kind everyone hated.

The kind teachers somehow loved.

The groups were announced.

Predictably, the friend group ended up together.

Kai celebrated.

The teacher regretted every decision that had led to this moment.

After class, they gathered in the library to divide the work.

Or at least attempt to.

"Let's be responsible."

Kai nodded seriously.

"Absolutely."

Five minutes later, he was spinning a pencil like a helicopter.

Mira looked exhausted.

"You're impossible."

"I've heard that before."

"From who?"

"Everyone."

"Good."

Liora laughed.

The sound earned a small smile from Evren.

One of those automatic smiles he never noticed himself making.

The meeting eventually ended with actual progress somehow being made.

Nobody understood how.

Least of all Kai.

By the time Liora arrived home, the sky had begun turning orange.

She dropped her bag beside the desk and stretched.

Then instinctively reached for her phone.

A new message was already waiting.

Rowan

how many times did kai embarrass himself today

Liora immediately laughed.

Liora

do you want the short version or the long version

Rowan

long

And just like that, the conversation began.

She told him about the movie.

The project.

The pencil helicopter incident.

The increasingly concerning state of Kai's brain.

Rowan replied with comments that somehow made everything funnier.

Minutes became an hour.

The hour disappeared without either of them noticing.

At one point, Rowan sent a photo.

A bookstore.

Small.

Quiet.

Rows of books stretching toward the back wall.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a place he'd stopped by after class.

Rowan

found heaven

Liora smiled.

Then immediately stood up.

Walking toward her own bookshelf.

She snapped a quick picture.

Not fancy.

Not carefully arranged.

Just the books she genuinely loved.

Then sent it.

A reply came almost instantly.

Rowan

okay yours wins

Liora

obviously

Rowan

rude

The conversation continued.

Easy.

Comfortable.

Like it always did now.

The strange thing was that neither of them ever seemed to run out of things to talk about.

Somehow there was always another topic.

Another story.

Another question.

Another little thing.

That night, Liora sat cross-legged on her bed while scrolling through old photos.

A habit she'd had for years.

Most of the images were random.

School memories.

Friends.

Polaroids.

Pieces of ordinary days.

Her thumb paused over one picture.

The movie theater from Saturday.

Kai making a ridiculous pose.

Mira trying not to laugh.

Jaden questioning his life choices.

Evren standing in the background.

Smiling.

She stared at it for a moment.

Then sent it to the group chat.

Within seconds, chaos erupted.

Kai

I LOOK AMAZING

Mira

you look insane

Jaden

accurate

Kai

jealousy is a disease

Liora laughed.

The familiar warmth returned.

The kind that always came from her friends.

The kind that felt like home.

A few minutes later, another notification appeared.

Different chat.

Rowan

what are you laughing at

Without thinking, she took a screenshot of the group chat and sent it.

A simple action.

A harmless action.

Yet it meant something.

Because a few months ago, her online life and her real life had been separate things.

Now they were beginning to overlap.

Slowly.

Naturally.

Without her realizing it.

Across the city, Evren sat at his desk trying to finish homework.

Trying being the important word.

Because every few minutes, his phone buzzed with messages from the group chat.

Mostly Kai being Kai.

Eventually he gave up on studying and opened the conversation.

The theater photo filled the screen.

For a moment, he simply stared.

A memory from two days ago.

Yet somehow it already felt distant.

His gaze lingered on the image.

Then drifted toward Liora's smile in the corner of the photo.

Something about it felt familiar.

Comforting.

The way it always had.

His phone buzzed again.

Another message from Kai.

He shook his head and laughed.

Then returned to work.

Across another part of the city, Rowan looked at the screenshot Liora had sent.

The group chat.

The jokes.

The names.

Kai.

Mira.

Jaden.

Evren.

People he'd heard about dozens of times by now.

People who existed only through stories.

Yet somehow they already felt familiar.

His eyes lingered on one name slightly longer than the others.

Evren.

The childhood best friend.

The one who appeared in almost every story.

The one who seemed connected to every memory.

For a moment, Rowan stared at the screen.

Thinking.

Then the moment passed.

He locked his phone.

The room fell silent again.

Outside, night settled over the city.

Inside three different rooms, three different lives continued moving forward.

And none of them noticed how the lines between those lives were slowly beginning to blur.
