Chapter 31 - VOLUME 31: A FULL MINUTE

Chapter 31

"A Full Minute"

Senri's Training Ground — Next Day. Morning.

The twins arrived before sunrise. This is not news. What is news is that Himiko is behind them by approximately thirty seconds — she walks through the gate with the sky blue kimono and the grey scarf and the careful-but-not-compensating gait of a leg that is fully healed and has been told as much.

ALICE

(Looking at Himiko.)

"Walk to the fence and back."

Himiko walks to the fence and back. No hesitation, no favoring.

ALICE

"Good. You're cleared."

HIMIKO

"I was cleared yesterday."

ALICE

(Dryly.)

"You were cleared to go home. You're now cleared to get hurt again on purpose. Slightly different."

She spends the next hour catching Himiko up on the Body Enhancement lesson — the core, the surface hold, the mapping from head to toe, the same fundamentals the twins ran yesterday. Himiko absorbs it with the speed she absorbs everything and within forty minutes is maintaining Enhancement at the same level the twins reached after an afternoon of practice.

HIRUMA

(Watching.)

"She did it faster than us."

AYATO

(Evenly.)

"She also nearly bled out in the forest three days ago. Let her have it."

HIRUMA

(After a pause.)

"...Fair."

Himiko, having overheard all of this, says nothing. But the small precise smile is there briefly.

Training Ground — Wind Crusher Sessions

SENRI

(To all three.)

"You need to hold the Enhancement through my attack for one minute. That's the target. One minute under Wind Crusher. When all three of you can do that — we move forward."

HIRUMA

"What comes after?"

SENRI

"Something useful. Focus on this first."

He raises his hand. Three students in a line on the packed earth, Enhancement active, watching his palm.

WHOOOOOM—!! BOOM—!!

It is not easier the second day. Senri's Wind Crusher is not a technique that becomes less than what it is because you have encountered it before. The mass of compressed wind hits with the same force each time and the question is purely how much of that force the Enhancement can absorb before the stance breaks.

Round one: Himiko goes at eight seconds — the leg, still newer than the rest of her, not fully recalibrated to full exertion. She lands sideways, pushes herself up immediately.

Hiruma holds to fifteen. Better than yesterday. His fire Enhancement thickening with each session, the fire's natural desire to push being directed into something that holds rather than expels.

Ayato to twelve. The wind Enhancement is the most naturally resistant of the three — an element that is itself force being used to resist force — but his body is the lightest and once the stance breaks the mass of him is less to anchor.

WHOOOOOM—!! BOOM—!!

Round two. Get up. Try again. Enhancement active from the moment his hand rises.

WHOOOOOM—!! BOOM—!!

Round three. Up. Again.

The session runs through the morning into the afternoon. Session after session, the training ground accumulating the marks of what's happening — scorched grass at the edges where they land, the packed earth disrupted. Bruises building on bruises. A cut on Hiruma's forearm from the fence edge when he went into it at an angle. Ayato's shoulder darkening where he keeps landing on the same side.

They do not stop.

( (Hiruma) The goblin. Himiko's scream. The blood on the blue kimono. )

( No. That doesn't happen again. Get up. )

( (Ayato) The blade bouncing off the hide. The kick. The helplessness. )

( Never that again. Hold it longer. )

( (Himiko) The claw. The ground. )

( No. )

WHOOOOOM—!! BOOM—!!

Up. Again.

By the end of the day — they are holding for thirty seconds. All three of them. Bruised and bleeding slightly at the edges but thirty seconds under Wind Crusher, standing.

SENRI

(Calling it.)

"Enough. Go home."

They collect themselves. The walk home is quiet — not the comfortable silence of earlier in the week but the silence of people who have been pushed past a comfortable place and are processing where they arrived.

HIRUMA

(After a while.)

"We're going to be extremely sore tomorrow."

AYATO

"Yes."

HIRUMA

"Good."

HIMIKO

(The small smile again.)

"Good."

They part at the road branch. Himiko goes home. The twins make it to the Sato house, shower with the deliberateness of people whose bodies have earned hot water, and end up at the dinner table wearing the aftermath of the day.

HIRUMA

(Looking at the bruise on his arm.)

"We asked for this."

AYATO

(Eating.)

"We did."

HIRUMA

"And we're going to keep asking for it."

AYATO

"Until Wind Crusher isn't enough."

HIRUMA

(Grinning despite everything.)

"Until Wind Crusher isn't enough."

A pause.

AYATO

(Out of nowhere.)

"Do you think Sensei put Touma-san through the same thing?"

Hiruma looks at him. Then starts laughing — genuinely, the full one.

HIRUMA

"YES!! Somewhere in the Academy right now Touma-san is very grateful he is no longer in Millin!!"

Ayato's mouth does the thing. They go to sleep.

The Sato House — The Following Morning

There is a day that arrives, after several days of difficult training, where the body has adapted enough to the new load that waking up feels different. Not pain-free — the bruises are still present, the soreness still in the joints. But underneath it, a baseline that has shifted. The body at a slightly higher setting than before.

This is that morning.

Hiruma is up before Ayato calls him. He is in the kitchen already when Sakura starts the fire — unusual enough that she looks at him twice.

HIRUMA

(At the table, Enhancement already active — the faint warmth of it at his skin.)

"Good morning, Mama."

SAKURA

(Looking at him.)

"You look better."

HIRUMA

"I feel better. I think yesterday made me stronger."

SAKURA

"Yesterday left you with three bruises and a cut on your arm."

HIRUMA

(Completely sincere.)

"Exactly."

She looks at him for a moment. Her oldest son, ten years old, with fire magic running at the surface of his skin before breakfast, telling her that getting bruised made him better. Believing it.

She puts extra rice in his bowl.

Ayato comes out and sees Hiruma's posture and expression and the Enhancement at his skin and understands immediately. He sits down. Starts his own Enhancement running. Picks up his chopsticks.

HIRUMA

(Noticing.)

"You're running it."

AYATO

"So are you."

HIRUMA

"We should run it all morning. From now until the session."

AYATO

(Already doing it.)

"I had the same thought."

Sakura sets breakfast on the table. Hugs Hiruma first — the sudden, firm hug of a mother who does this when she needs to — then Ayato. Both boys return it, the Enhancement warm and present against her arms.

SAKURA

(Holding them briefly.)

"I'm glad you're happy this morning."

HIRUMA

(Into her shoulder.)

"We have things to do. It's hard to be unhappy about it."

She lets go. They eat. She watches them eat and notes the difference in their posture and thinks: they are becoming something. I am watching it happen.

TOK TOK

Himiko at the door. Of course. Enhancement already active at her palms — the deep blue visible even through the door's gap.

HIMIKO

(To the twins.)

"You're running it."

HIRUMA

(Grabbing his jacket.)

"All morning."

HIMIKO

"Same. Since I woke up."

Three students. Enhancement active before they've even left the house. An idea they arrived at separately and found they'd arrived at together. The three faces going out through the Sato gate are carrying something forward.

Senri's Training Ground — Morning

Senri sees them come through the gate. He doesn't comment on their posture or the active Enhancement visible at their skin. He sees it and he knows what it means — they ran it all morning, building the endurance through simple sustained time rather than intensity. Smart.

Alice is at the fence. She looks at them.

( (Alice) They look different today. Not rested — still the bruises from yesterday. But underneath the bruises, something settled and decided. They found the answer without being told to find it. )

( Exceptional quality. All three of them. )

No words from Alice. She just nods.

SENRI

(Moving to the far end.)

"Enhancement active. Stand."

They stand. Enhancement active — it has been active for three hours. The magic at their skin is not fresh and spiked but settled and dense, the quality of something that has run long enough to find its own comfortable operating level.

Senri raises his hand. His eyes move across all three of them.

( (Senri) The stances are different. Lower. More rooted. The Enhancement isn't being held — it's running on its own. They've been building it since before they got here. )

He raises his palm.

WHOOOOOM—!!

Wind Crusher. Full weight. The same attack, the same scale, the same compressed mass of wind element that knocked them across the training ground yesterday session after session.

It hits.

BOOM—!!

They hold.

...

Ten seconds. The force is immense — their stances vibrating with the continuous pressure, feet pressing into the packed earth, Enhancement at the skin taking the load and distributing it. Ten seconds and they are still standing.

WHOOOOOM...

Twenty seconds. Hiruma's fire running hot and dense at his skin — not erupting, holding. The force is getting under his guard at the legs and he roots deeper, the stance absorbing. Twenty seconds.

WHOOOOOM...

Thirty seconds. Ayato's wind Enhancement — the element meeting the attack and finding a conversation between them, like-element against like-element, the resistance stronger than fire or water would be against pure wind. He is the most stable of the three.

WHOOOOOM...

Forty seconds. Himiko. Water Enhancement running through her completely, the continuous flow that does not tire the way a held position tires. The goblin attack in her memory — she thinks of it and routes it into the stance. Forty seconds.

WHOOOOOM...

Fifty seconds. Hiruma's fire starting to spike — the enhancement wanting to expel. He routes it back. Stay. Hold. Fifty seconds.

WHOOOOOM...

Sixty seconds.

...

Senri lowers his hand.

The wind dissipates. The training ground is quiet.

Three students, still standing. Bruised from yesterday, breathing hard from the effort of holding, but standing.

... ... ...

Senri looks at them for a long moment.

Then he does something that makes all three of them stare.

He claps.

CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.

Deliberate. Genuine.

SENRI

"That was one minute under Wind Crusher. All three of you."

A pause.

HIRUMA

(Staring.)

"...Sensei. Are you clapping?"

SENRI

(Stopping.)

"I was."

HIRUMA

"You're clapping."

SENRI

"It seemed appropriate."

AYATO

(Quietly.)

"Sensei is clapping."

Himiko makes a sound. It is, unmistakably, a laugh — small but genuine, the kind that comes out when something is genuinely surprising and you've been too tired to filter your reactions.

HIRUMA

(Grinning now, the bruises and the effort forgotten in this one excellent moment.)

"You're being weird, Sensei."

SENRI

(With complete dignity.)

"Take the compliment."

ALICE

(From the fence, warmly.)

"What he means is — a goblin like the one in the forest would now have a significantly harder time doing what it did to Himiko. The Enhancement you held just now changes what you can take. That matters."

The laughter settles. Three students sitting down on the packed earth, the good tired of something accomplished underneath the regular tired of the effort.

Training Ground — Midday

Alice has been inside for the last twenty minutes. She reappears carrying a large covered pot and three bowls on a tray with the practiced efficiency of someone who does not see cooking as a lesser task than training.

The smell arrives before she sets it down.

HIRUMA

(Sitting up immediately.)

"Is that—"

ALICE

(Setting the pot down.)

"Tonkatsu ramen. Sit properly."

She pours. The broth — rich, specific, the kind that takes most of a morning to get right. Hiruma is receiving his bowl with the expression of someone who has had a very hard several days and has just been handed something genuinely good.

HIRUMA

"Alice-sensei. You are an incredible person."

ALICE

(Sitting down.)

"I know. Eat."

They eat. Senri, who was given a bowl by Alice in the manner of someone who has done this before and is used to being included, eats quietly at the edge of the training ground.

Good food. Good quiet. The training ground doing its post-session thing — holding the evidence of the morning while the people in it recover.

HIRUMA

(When most of the bowl is gone.)

"Sensei. What's next?"

Senri sets down his bowl. He has been turning something over since before they arrived this morning — something he researched last week and is now certain of.

SENRI

"The Great Mage Tournament."

The twins look at each other. Then at Senri.

SENRI

"Next year — for the first time — the Tournament will include a junior division. Fighters under the age of fifteen."

...!!

HIRUMA

(Getting to his feet — the bowl is somehow still in his hand.)

"A JUNIOR TOURNAMENT—!!"

The bowl is very nearly not still in his hand. He corrects this with the instincts of someone who does not want to waste the ramen.

HIRUMA

(Setting the bowl down very carefully and then immediately being completely undignified.)

"WE'RE ENTERING!! RIGHT?! We're entering—"

SENRI

"If you can be ready. The tournament is in six months. I want you in it because it will give you something a training ground cannot — real opponents you haven't sparred with a hundred times, real stakes, real conditions. It will show you what you actually are."

Ayato is not standing or shouting but the energy change is visible — the slight forward lean, the eyes going sharp.

AYATO

"A junior division. Who else enters?"

SENRI

"Open registration across the region. Anyone under fifteen. I don't know the field yet."

AYATO

(Already thinking.)

"Six months to prepare."

SENRI

"Six months. Which is not enough time if we waste it."

HIMIKO

(Quietly.)

"I'm in."

SENRI

(Looking at her.)

"I expected that."

ALICE

(Setting down her bowl, the timing of someone who has been waiting for this moment.)

"Six months means one specific thing."

They look at her.

ALICE

"Special attacks. Your own. Not technique borrowed from what you've seen — yours, built from your element and your style and what makes you specifically dangerous. Your secret weapons."

The training ground goes quiet for a moment in the specific way it does when something important has landed correctly.

HIRUMA

(Low, the grin turning into something more serious and more certain.)

"Our own attacks."

AYATO

(Looking at his hands.)

"Built from the element. From the style."

HIMIKO

(Looking at hers.)

"Ours."

ALICE

"It's the hardest work we've done yet. It will be the best six months of your lives and also the worst. You will be building something from nothing, which means failing constantly until you find what's actually there."

She looks at all three of them.

ALICE

"Are you ready for that?"

Hiruma looks at Ayato. Ayato looks at Himiko. Himiko looks at them both.

HIRUMA + AYATO + HIMIKO

(Not planned. Not coordinated. Just the same.)

"Yes."

The Road Between Lumina and Nerva — Night

Far from Millin. Far from the training ground and the cooling ramen and three students who just said yes to the hardest six months of their lives.

On the road that runs through the forest belt between the kingdom's central settlements and the smaller village of Nerva — dark. The road is not lit. Nobody travels this stretch at night by choice.

Two figures.

Black cloaks. Deep-hooded. Moving without sound on a road that would make most people loud. They move the way people move when silence is a skill they have practised until it is indistinguishable from absence.

They stop at a crossing. The taller of the two looks at the fork in the road. South and east. The smaller one is looking at something in their hand — a piece of paper, too dark to read, but it seems they don't need to read it again to know what it says.

HOODED FIGURE 1 — TALLER

(Low. The voice carrying no further than the two of them.)

"Nerva is southeast. Two days at this pace."

HOODED FIGURE 2 — SMALLER

(Folding the paper away.)

"It won't be in Nerva. But Nerva is the closest settlement to where the trail leads. Someone there will know something."

FIGURE 1

"If they do — do we move like the others?"

A pause. The smaller figure looks at the road south.

FIGURE 2

(Neutral. Deliberate. The tone of someone who has already thought through every implication and arrived at a conclusion.)

"Only if necessary."

...

They move. South and east. The road accepts them and gives nothing back.

The villages they have already passed through are still rebuilding. The kingdom's knights are patrolling. Commander Hibino's report is on the king's desk.

And two hooded figures are moving south toward something they have not named out loud, following a trail that has brought them from the far north to a road two days from a village that none of the maps make remarkable.

What are they looking for?

The road doesn't say. The night doesn't say. The cloaks don't say.

They keep walking.
