Chapter 30 - VOLUME 30: BODY ENHANCEMENT

Chapter 30

"Body Enhancement"

The Sato House — Morning. Two Days After the Forest.

Two days. Himiko's leg is new-healed and tender but carrying weight again. She moved through the Sato house yesterday with the careful deliberateness of someone testing a repair — sitting, standing, stepping, confirming each function before trusting the next. By evening she was moving normally. This morning she is at the breakfast table.

Before the others came in, Ayato found Sakura in the kitchen doing the morning's first work. He stood in the doorway for a moment — the stance of someone who has been thinking about a question for two days and has decided this is the correct time to ask it.

AYATO

"Mama."

SAKURA

(Without turning from the stove.)

"Mm."

AYATO

"The night Himiko was hurt. What you did — with your wind. Closing the wound."

She turns. She looks at him — the particular look she reserves for questions she knew would arrive eventually and has been waiting on.

SAKURA

"What about it?"

AYATO

"Wind is an element that moves air. How does moving air close a wound?"

She sets down what she's holding. Turns properly to face him.

SAKURA

"Any magic user can do what I did. With enough practice."

AYATO

"Any element?"

SAKURA

"Any element. The technique is called Magic Recovery Arts. It's not about the element itself — it's about using magic power directly to accelerate the body's natural healing processes. The element is the vehicle, but the work is the magic itself, focused inward rather than outward."

[MAGIC RECOVERY ARTS] An advanced inward application of elemental magic. Rather than projecting the element as an attack or enhancement, the mage channels their magic power into the target's body — or their own — directing it to support and accelerate the body's natural healing. Any element can serve as the vehicle for this technique. The theory requires significant study to understand correctly, and practical application takes years of training to develop to a useful level. As a result, most magic users never develop it — the time investment is considerable and the combat applications are indirect. Healers who specialise in Recovery Arts are respected and rare.

AYATO

(Processing.)

"Any element can do it. But most people don't develop it."

SAKURA

"The theory is complex. Most people don't have the patience to study it and then the additional years to develop the practical skill. Your father, for example."

She says this with a tone that is not quite criticism and not quite affection and is both simultaneously.

SAKURA

"He has been using flame magic for twenty-five years and he is remarkable with it. Recovery Arts — he studied the theory once, decided it was too much work, and went back to hitting things."

She laughs. Small and genuine.

AYATO

(Filing this carefully.)

"I'll study the theory."

SAKURA

(Turning back to the stove.)

"I know you will. Go eat breakfast."

The Sato Kitchen — Breakfast

Hiruma and Himiko are already at the table. The black kimono and the sky blue one side by side — Himiko's washed and returned, her scarf on despite the morning being warmer today.

Ayato sits. Sakura sets bowls down. The comfortable sound of breakfast.

HIRUMA

(Looking at Himiko's leg under the table.)

"You're walking normally."

HIMIKO

"Since yesterday afternoon."

HIRUMA

"Does it hurt?"

HIMIKO

"When I think about it. When I don't, no."

A pause. The breakfast continuing. Then:

HIRUMA

(Setting down his chopsticks briefly.)

"We couldn't take it down. The goblin. We couldn't even cut it."

AYATO

"No."

HIRUMA

"We're supposed to be getting strong. We trained every morning for two and a half years. We have integration. We can fire magic spheres and hold body-path fire in our arms and spar at an equal level against each other — and one goblin sent us running with a girl bleeding."

He says it flatly. Not self-pity — accounting.

HIMIKO

(Also flatly.)

"We're ten years old and we've been doing this for two months since awakening. The goblin was a full-grown forest creature. The comparison isn't even fair."

HIRUMA

"The comparison is exactly what we need to make. If we're going to be Knights we'll face things like that. Worse things."

AYATO

(Quietly.)

"He's right. The goblin is the correct reference point. Not other ten-year-olds."

They eat. The morning settles around the acknowledgment.

HIRUMA

(More like himself — the forward motion returning.)

"We get stronger. That's the answer. Whatever Sensei and Alice tell us to do — we do it more and better until the goblin is the thing that runs."

HIMIKO

"Agreed."

AYATO

"Agreed."

HIRUMA

(Picking up his chopsticks again.)

"We're also probably going to get yelled at when we arrive at training."

HIMIKO

"Absolutely."

AYATO

"Alice especially."

HIRUMA

(Eating stoically.)

"Worth it."

Himiko finishes her breakfast. She stands — carefully, the leg cooperating — and bows to Sakura.

HIMIKO

(To Sakura.)

"Thank you for everything, Sakura-san. Truly."

SAKURA

(Warmly.)

"You're always welcome here. Go home and rest today — tomorrow is soon enough for training."

Himiko nods. Looks at the twins.

HIMIKO

"See you tomorrow."

HIRUMA

"Don't let Alice find you before we do or we'll never hear the end of it."

HIMIKO

(Already going.)

"Too late. I'll see her this afternoon."

She leaves. The door closes.

The twins look at each other. Then they start getting ready. White kimono — washed, bright. Black kimono — washed, bright. Swords at hips. The morning routine that has run every day for two and a half years.

HIRUMA

(Adjusting his collar.)

"Ready to get scolded?"

AYATO

(Opening the door.)

"Ready to get scolded."

Millin Village Road — Morning

The road toward Senri's is the same road it always is. The morning village. The well. The lane branching right.

They are almost at the lane when a voice comes from the left.

BOY'S VOICE

"Oi. Sato twins."

They stop. Turn.

A boy their age, leaning against a fence post with the particular energy of someone who has positioned himself where he could be seen and was waiting for the opportunity. Tall for ten — noticeably tall, with the early shoulders of someone whose build is heading somewhere. Reddish hair, cut short on the sides, kept messy on top. The earth magic aura is barely visible at his hands — the amber-brown of someone who has not been training it long but has been testing what it does.

BAJI

(With a grin that contains more challenge than warmth.)

"Heard something interesting about you two. Went into the northern forest at night and got mauled by a goblin. Had to run home."

Hiruma's jaw tightens.

BAJI

"Thought you were the ones with the special training. The strongest kids in Millin. All that."

HIRUMA

(Stepping forward.)

"You want to say that again—"

AYATO

(One hand on Hiruma's arm. Not forceful — just present.)

"Don't."

Hiruma stops. Looks at Ayato. Ayato's expression is clear: this is not worth the energy and we have somewhere to be.

BAJI

(Noticing the restraint, pressing it.)

"Relax. I'm just saying — all that morning training and you still ran from a single goblin. Makes you wonder what the training is actually building."

AYATO

(To Baji, level, not heated.)

"You're welcome to go find one yourself and compare results."

He starts walking. Hiruma follows — the specifically controlled walk of someone who really wants to turn around and doesn't.

BAJI

(After them.)

"Someday I'll show you both. Earth magic, proper training, real results. I'll prove you're weak and I'm not."

They keep walking.

HIRUMA

(Low, to Ayato.)

"I want to go back."

AYATO

"I know."

HIRUMA

"Just once. Just to—"

AYATO

"Training. Now."

( (Hiruma) Earth magic. Lives next to Himiko, which means she knows him and hasn't mentioned him, which means he's not worth mentioning under normal circumstances. Loud about being strong, which usually means the opposite. )

( But he's the same age. Awakened at the same time. And we got hurt by the goblin and everyone knows it. )

( ...I'm going to remember that. )

Senri's Training Ground — Morning

They come through the gate.

Senri is standing in the center. Alice is at the fence.

Both of them looking at the twins.

...

Alice moves first.

STOMP STOMP STOMP

She covers the distance between the fence and the gate with the particular speed of someone who has been waiting to do this since they got the news and is not going to delay it further.

ALICE

(Full volume — the volume she doesn't usually use.)

"What were you THINKING?! Into the northern forest at NIGHT without telling anyone — without your father, without Senri, without ANY adult who could have prevented you from doing something that colossally STUPID—"

She stops. Directly in front of them.

ALICE

"Himiko almost died. Do you understand that? A goblin wound to the leg that deep, without healing available immediately—"

HIRUMA

(Not arguing. Just absorbing.)

"We know."

ALICE

"You KNOW but you went anyway—"

She stops again. Looks at them. At Hiruma's still slightly red eyes and the bruise on Ayato's chest visible where the kimono sits. At two boys who came back from something and know it.

She puts both hands on their shoulders. Pulls them into a brief, fierce hug that lasts about three seconds and contains approximately thirty years of being a Knight who knows what it means to almost lose the people standing next to you.

Then she lets go.

ALICE

(Quieter now.)

"I'm glad you're not dead. Both of you. Don't make me repeat this conversation."

HIRUMA

(Genuinely moved, trying not to show it.)

"We won't."

She steps back. Senri comes forward. He looks at them for a moment without speaking — the long look.

SENRI

"You have trained for two and a half years. Your foundation is real. Your integration is ahead of schedule. And a single goblin sent you home with a wounded friend and bruised ribs."

He says it simply, without anger. The accuracy of it is worse than anger would be.

SENRI

"You want to know why."

HIRUMA

"Yes."

SENRI

"Endurance. Not willpower — physical endurance against a stronger opponent. You are strong enough for your level. The goblin is a different level entirely. Against something at that level, you lack the capacity to absorb hits and keep functioning."

ALICE

(Adding.)

"Himiko would not have been injured the way she was if she'd had higher physical endurance. The goblin's claw found her because she had nothing hardening her against it at the moment of contact. Not her fault — we hadn't covered it yet. But that ends today."

[BODY ENHANCEMENT] A defensive application of magic integration. Rather than channelling magic outward as a projection or into a weapon, the mage distributes their element across the surface of their entire body — skin, muscle, bone — creating a continuous reinforcing layer from head to toe. This dramatically increases the mage's ability to absorb impact without sustaining damage. The technique differs from basic reinforcement (which covers specific points) in that it must be maintained across the whole body simultaneously. Activation must happen before impact — a fighter who has not engaged Body Enhancement before a hit receives the full force of the attack.

SENRI

"This is your next lesson. Body Enhancement. You will learn to activate it before you enter a fight and sustain it through the fight. When you can hold it against a meaningful attack — we move forward."

HIRUMA

(The forward lean — the ready.)

"When do we start?"

SENRI

"Now."

Training Ground — Body Enhancement Training

They stand in the center of the training ground. Swords sheathed — this is a different kind of work.

SENRI

"You know your core. You know the circulation. Enhancement is the same starting point — core, then outward — but instead of the magic running through your body and projecting beyond it, you stop it at the surface. You hold it there. Layer it like armour."

HIRUMA

"Hold it at the skin."

SENRI

"At the skin. From head to toe, without gaps. A gap in the enhancement is a gap in the armour."

They close their eyes. Find the core — immediate, automatic. Let the circulation begin — immediate, automatic.

Then — instead of letting it run through and outward — hold it at the surface.

...

Hiruma gets it in about forty seconds. The fire spreading across his skin from the inside — not erupting outward, contained at the surface, the warmth building to something denser and more present than the normal aura. He checks his arms. His chest. Confirms it's even.

( Same as the blade path. Same as the body-arm practice from the rest day. I've been running this version accidentally all along. )

Ayato gets it in about thirty seconds. More precise — he maps it systematically, the wind flowing from core to the surface in every direction at once, the silver-white presence at his skin more visible than usual.

They open their eyes and look at each other. Then at Senri.

HIRUMA

(Surprised.)

"That was — that's actually not that hard."

AYATO

"The foundation made it accessible. We've been building toward this without knowing it."

SENRI

"Yes. The technique is simple. The test is not."

He steps back to the far end of the training ground. Raises his right hand.

SENRI

"Keep your Enhancement active. Do not release it regardless of what happens. Your task is simply to endure."

They look at his raised palm. The green wind gathering — not the sphere they've seen, not the blade-extension technique. Something with more mass behind it. Something with intention.

HIRUMA

(Low, to Ayato.)

"What is he—"

Senri's eyes close for one second. Open.

SENRI

(Calm.)

"Wind Crusher."

[ WIND CRUSHER ]

WHOOOOOM—!!

A concentrated mass of wind — not the needle of Tempest Point but the opposite, a broad wall of compressed air moving at speed, the kind of force that takes loose stone and does to it what the name suggests. It is the full weight of Senri Kako's wind element shaped into an attack intended to test, not destroy — but at his level, the reduced version of an attack is still an event.

It hits them.

BOOM—!!

Ayato goes first — the angle catches him slightly off-center and he goes sideways, Enhancement screaming against the force, the wind getting under his guard and lifting him. He lands ten feet away against the fence, bounces, sits up.

Hiruma lasts three more seconds — his fire Enhancement holding slightly better against raw force, his lower center of gravity helping — but on the third second the pressure finds the edge of his stance and he goes too. Through the air. Hits the ground rolling, comes up on one knee.

...

Both of them are on the ground. Both of them bruised — Ayato's shoulder, Hiruma's knee where he rolled. Not seriously hurt. But clearly, unambiguously, outgunned.

HIRUMA

(On one knee, looking at his own hands.)

"...He crushed us."

AYATO

(At the fence, checking his shoulder.)

"The Enhancement helped. Without it that would have been worse."

SENRI

(From the far end, lowering his hand.)

"You held it for four seconds. Ayato. And seven. Hiruma. Those are starting numbers. That's all they are."

HIRUMA

(Standing.)

"Do it again."

Senri looks at him. At the bruised knee, the set jaw, the absolute absence of retreat in his posture.

SENRI

"Again. Keep the Enhancement active from the moment I begin to raise my hand."

WHOOOOOM—!! BOOM—!!

Again. And again. The afternoon turning in the training ground, the two boys being knocked across it session after session, getting up each time with the particular quality of people who have decided that getting up is just the next thing that happens after going down.

By the end of the session — they can hold for twelve seconds. Hiruma. Ten. Ayato. The Enhancement is getting denser, the gaps closing. It will take time. The direction is correct.

SENRI

(Calling the session.)

"Enough."

Two bruised boys. Two sets of magic reserves that have been working hard. Two people who looked at a wind attack strong enough to crush boulders and stood in front of it by choice, repeatedly, until the day ran out.

ALICE

(From the fence.)

"The goblin that hurt Himiko won't be able to do what it did if you can hold that enhancement against Senri's attack. That's what you're building toward."

Hiruma looks at his hands. The bruises. The knowledge of exactly what he couldn't do today.

( Again tomorrow. And the day after. Until Wind Crusher isn't enough to move us. )

He picks up his swords. Sheathes them.

HIRUMA

(To Ayato.)

"Tomorrow."

AYATO

(Adjusting his kimono.)

"Tomorrow."
