Chapter 8 - checkmate protocol

Checkmate protocol -chapter 8

The chapter started with everyone's favorite midg- I mean grandmaster, Cedra, gosh I would be fired walking toward a rapidly expanding hazard zone.

A toxic field had spread through the district-unnatural, unstable, and growing by the second. Civilians were already panicking, and a few idiots were still trying to take pictures like it was some kind of event.

Cedra sighed.

> "Even a pawn would know it's not smart to stand here..."

She raised her hand.

Invisible pressure spread through the area.

People began moving without thinking.

Not forced.

Not puppeted.

> Assigned.

civilians became "pawns" → guided to safety routes

responders became "knights" → redirected for containment

obstacles became "bishops" → cleared paths

Cedra didn't control them directly.

She simply assigned meaning to their will.

Then-

The sky tore open.

A figure descended through the haze.

At first glance, he looked like another anomaly.

But what made him different wasn't just his presence-

It was his suit.

It was nothing like the motion designs.

Not like the Pure white spandex. Clean. Minimal. Symbol glowing faintly.

This one was the opposite.

The base material was a deep, reinforced black weave, layered like industrial armor cloth

Over it ran amber-yellow containment veins, glowing faintly like unstable amber glass it had on the serratus anterior glowing dark green pulsing with radioactive energy it was JUST SOOO COOOL.

The chest bore the Radiation Corps atomic symbol, but it wasn't clean anymore-

it pulsed like a living signal, flickering between stability and overload

Across the torso and limbs, sections of dark green bio-reactive plating clung like infected armor

The green wasn't decorative-it moved, like radiation trapped under skin, constantly trying to escape

The right side of the suit shimmered unevenly, as if reality itself struggled to keep it intact

It didn't look like a uniform anymore.

> It looked like a sealed disaster wearing a human shape.

The man inside it landed heavily.

The moment his feet touched the ground-

the toxic hazard began to collapse inward.

> He was absorbing it.

Not resisting it.

Not blocking it.

> Eating it.

He exhaled slowly.

> "I am Charles." Charles as a immortal corps member he got notification of the hazard so be came to help but

Cedra didn't even hesitate.

She tilted her head slightly, already calculating.

> "Hazard + guy who looks like he can create hazard = villain who caused it for attention."

She paused.

> "Confirmed."

Charles frowned.

> "That's not-" someone just set him up

Cedra didn't wait.

Her hand flicked.

The ground shifted.

Chess pieces formed mid-air from debris-no longer small, but massive constructs:

armored pawns

towering knight-shaped frames

shifting bishop-like energy structures

They weren't human.

> They were strategic manifestations of will.

Charles moved instantly.

Radiation surged from his suit.

The amber veins flared.

The green plating on his body pulsed violently as he absorbed the surrounding hazard completely-turning the battlefield into unstable energy pressure.

Cedra's constructs advanced.

Charles broke through them with controlled bursts of radiation output.

Every strike destabilized the air.

Every step he took purified then re-poisoned the ground simultaneously.

But neither of them could finish it.

Not because they were weak-

but because they were too exhausted too quickly trying to override each other's systems.

The air shifted.

A distortion rippled through the battlefield.

Then-

Golden Crow arrived.

No announcement.

No entrance.

Just presence.

He looked at both of them mid-conflict.

> "Two targets already engaged. Convenient."

His twin rings activated:

Form

Shape

Reality bent.

Cedra's constructs froze mid-motion.

Charles' radiation flow distorted.

Before either of them could react-

both were struck at once by compressed spatial disruption.

They collapsed.

Unconscious.

Golden Crow stood alone in the broken hazard zone.

The Radiation Corps suit still faintly pulsing nearby...

and Cedra's chess pieces slowly dissolving into dust.

> "This will be useful."

As a voice spoke through the ear piece "now return them to the lab" it was Kronos himselfi

Chapter 8 - Act 2

In the lab, Cedra and Charles were contained in separate stabilized restraints, both monitored under layered containment fields.

Standing over them was Golden Crow.

But something was different.

He wasn't his usual arrogant self.

He looked... cautious.

Nervous.

Like a man standing too close to something far above his rank.

Waiting for Kronos.

Then-

Kronos stood up.

Golden Crow tensed instantly.

> "Your performance didn't go to my liking..."

The pause was sharp.

Golden Crow froze.

Then Kronos continued calmly:

> "...but you did your job successfully."

Relief hit immediately.

Golden Crow exhaled quietly and placed three sealed vials on the table:

Cedra's saliva sample

a strand of her hair

and an extracted white blood cell sample

Backup material.

In case she escaped before full replication.

Kronos glanced at Cedra.

> "Wake her."

Golden Crow hesitated-

then slapped her awake.

Cedra's eyes snapped open.

She immediately smirked.

> "So... if this isn't the big bad himself... I assume it's part of the plan where you try to-"

Golden Crow cut in:

> "Silence."

But Kronos raised a hand.

> "No."

Then, casually:

> "Set up a board."

Golden Crow obeyed.

A chessboard formed between them.

Cedra's restraints loosened-not fully released, but enough to let her sit forward.

She raised an eyebrow.

> "A game?"

Kronos sat opposite her.

Golden Crow stood behind like a shadow.

Then-

Kronos ripped her containment restraints open effortlessly.

Cedra's eyes narrowed slightly.

> "Aren't you afraid I'll use my power on you?"

Kronos didn't even look up.

> "Your will would never exceed mine."

A pause.

> "Especially considering how easily you were contained."

That line landed.

Cedra clicked her tongue.

Annoyed.

She moved first.

White: Pawn to e5.

> Cedra: "I don't know what you want... but I will never join you."

Kronos responded instantly.

Black: e4.

> "It's simple," he said. "World domination."

Cedra's eyes sharpened.

White: d6.

> "I don't think you're that simple. You play too clean for someone claiming chaos."

Kronos responded.

Black: Nf3.

> "You caught me there, Grandmaster. I assume the French Academy would be proud."

Mocking tone.

Cedra didn't react.

She played:

White: exd4.

Kronos countered:

Black: d4.

The game escalated.

Precise.

Balanced.

Neither side giving ground.

Cedra narrowed her eyes.

> "Why do you think I'd join you?"

Kronos answered while playing:

Black: O-O-O

Cedra responded:

White: Nbd7

Then Kronos asked calmly:

> "You have the Pulse, don't you?"

Cedra's expression shifted instantly.

A crack in composure.

> "How do you know that?"

Kronos continued the board:

Black: g4

Cedra responded: White: b5

He leaned back slightly.

> "I studied the Pulse."

A hologram activated.

Golden Crow formed a barrier around it so no one could interfere.

The projection displayed biological structures.

DNA layering.

Pulse has 2 metahuman has 1

Energy alignment and DNA alignment

As the pulse still in motion metahuman already formed a system

Differences between:

Normal metahumans who is

- unknown origin

- has a governor like maystatin to cap superpowers

-has one DNA layer

- body develop so they perfectly able to use their superpowers

- access full power at puberty

Pulse individuals

- next step of human evolution

- doesn't have any governor

- has 2 dna layers

- still developing to form a structure across generation of evolution

Cedra frowned.

> "I'm a chess grandmaster, not a bioscientist."

Kronos explained calmly:

> "Metahumans adapt their bodies to power over time. Stable systems. Governors. Limits that's why you don't see often a adult hero defeated by a teen who still in puberty."

He tapped the projection.

> "Pulse individuals do not."

The screen zoomed in.

> "They are the next stage of human evolution-still unstable, still developing evolving."

Cedra's expression tightened slightly.

> "Their power is unnaturally strong... but lacks regulation."

The projection shifted:

no Bio-Limit Governor

overlapping energy systems

unstable outer biological expression

Kronos continued:

> "Which is why your body reflects it."

Cedra's hand instinctively moved to her midsection.

A faint irregular mark beneath her clothing.

A Pulse "signature scar a birthscar."

Not injury.

Not defect.

> Evolution imprint.

For the first time-

Cedra looked slightly unsettled.

The chess game continued.

Move 27.

Kronos played a sharp sequence-

Ka2 → Qb2#

Checkmate.

Silence.

Cedra exhaled slowly.

But her expression stayed firm.

> "Why are you telling me all this?"

Kronos looked directly at her.

> "Because you are not just a strategist."

> "You are proof."

A pause.

> "Join me. Or don't."

> "But understand this..."

His voice lowered slightly.

> "People like you don't survive long once the world learns what you are."

Cedra stood up abruptly.

Golden Crow moved instantly-

but Kronos raised a hand.

> "No need."

He glanced at a monitor.

A faint signal confirmed:

> COPY COMPLETE

The chess game had never been just a game.

It was a biometric scan disguised as dialogue.

Cedra noticed.

Her expression darkened slightly.

> "...You used the game."

Kronos stood.

> "Of course."

Golden Crow stayed silent.

For once-

not because he wanted to.

But because he understood:

> the plan was already finished.

As the clay version stud at the mentally defeated cedra the clay who call itself grandmaster use the depends race data of the symbiot to form a pattern to itself in real time.

As it used the chess power of cedra she tried to stop her but Kronos used a syringe that put her unconscious.

Their they used the clay power to make Charles a pawn and make him willingly take off his bracelet since he was unconscious so his will was low.

A faint distortion formed behind them-

a Pathway opening somewhere in the system's detection range...

Knighthood, Flameboy, and Road Ranger arrived together through the Pathway of Solution.

They stepped out mid-conversation, still joking as they walked in.

Flameboy laughed.

> "There's a superhero out there called Dark Horse... and her villain is literally called White Bunny."

He snorted.

> "What's next? A hero team called The Zoo?"

Road Ranger tilted his head.

> "The Animalocly actually exists. It's a villain organization."

Silence.

Then all three paused.

> "...That's worse," Flameboy muttered.

They kept walking, still half-laughing, until the Pathway shifted abruptly.

Its light flickered.

The destination stabilized.

And then they saw it.

Cedra.

Contained.

The atmosphere dropped instantly.

No more jokes.

No more laughter.

Just silence the pathaway lead them here because they wanted to go to french through her that's why they wear beach clothes or butler clothes.

They wanted to play chess with cedra but----

Knighthood's expression hardened.

> "Okay... this is not a normal chess invitation."

Flameboy stepped forward immediately.

> "Yeah. We're fixing this."

Road Ranger already raised his hand.

The Pathway responded.

Containment structures cracked under combined interference:

Flameboy's heat destabilizing locks

Road Ranger's Pathway unraveling structural logic

Knighthood's raw force breaking physical restraints

Cedra was pulled free.

But-

The moment she was released-

The air ignited.

Kronos had already moved.

A surge of Gamma energy erupted through the lab systems.

It wasn't aimed at them directly-

it was aimed at Flameboy.

His flames reacted instantly.

Overload.

Amplification.

Chain ignition.

> "Shit-!" Flameboy snapped.

Knighthood reacted in a split second.

He stepped forward and raised his shield.

The explosion hit.

A violent blast tore through the chamber.

Walls collapsed.

Glass shattered.

Energy spiraled outward in controlled destruction.

But Knighthood held.

Everything behind his shield survived.

Flameboy.

Road Ranger.

Cedra.

When the light faded-

silence returned.

The lab was gone.

Half-collapsed.

Burned.

Empty.

Kronos was already gone.

No trace.

No body.

Only a faint residual gamma distortion fading in the air.

Flameboy clenched his fists.

> "DAMN IT."

Road Ranger looked around slowly.

> "...He planned that."

Knighthood lowered his shield.

His voice was calm-but serious now.

> "No."

> "He didn't plan to win."

A pause.

> "He planned to learn."

Cedra looked at the ruins.

Quiet.

Thinking.

Then softly:

> "...Chess wasn't the game."

Silence.

The Pathway reformed faintly behind them.

Still active.

Still waiting.

Knighthood exhaled.

> "We're not done."

Charles finally woke up from his unconsciousness

> "i am okay" as he sighted he had to get a new bracelet it would be hard explaining to his general

Chapter ends so does the story

(If you wonder what the process though behind the outfits

American guy flameboy first thinking of french was beach clothes

The iraqin duo road ranger and knighthood though fancy and the fanciest thing came to mind is butler clothes)
