Ted froze mid-motion, the metal pipe still raised above the third infected. The creature's skull was already cracked from his previous swing, but he hadn't absorbed the essence yet. Hunger Sense screamed at him, the warm signature of a living human was approaching fast from behind, moving with cautious, deliberate steps.
The tunnel's emergency strips cast long, flickering shadows. The air was thick with the stench of decay and old lubricant from the utility pipes.
He lowered the pipe slowly, heart hammering against his ribs. The System flashed a urgent warning:
*[Detection Risk: High. Completing absorption now may reveal abnormal behavior. Hunger Frenzy debuff imminent in 47 minutes if quest remains incomplete.]*
Footsteps grew closer. A flashlight beam sliced through the darkness, sweeping left and right.
"Ted? Is that you?"
Elena's voice, low, tense, but unmistakably hers. She stepped into view, pistol gripped in both hands, barrel pointed downward but ready. Her short dark hair was tucked behind one ear, eyes narrowed against the poor lighting. She had clearly slipped out after him.
"What the hell are you doing out here alone?" she whispered harshly, glancing at the two downed infected bodies behind him. "Are you suicidal? Captain Reyes said no one leaves without backup."
Ted's mind raced. He couldn't let her see him feeding. Not the way he had to do it. The Normal Appearance buff was already fading; his skin felt cooler, the faint scent of decay might start clinging to him soon if he didn't finish the quest.
"I… I thought I heard something," he lied, keeping his voice steady. "Movement in the tunnel. Figured if it was just one or two, I could handle it quietly and get back before anyone noticed."
Elena's gaze flicked to the pipe in his hands, then to the corpses. "You handled these? Alone? Again?" There was suspicion mixed with reluctant respect. "Most people are barely holding it together in there. You move like you've done this before."
Ted forced a shrug, stepping slightly to block her view of the third infected. "Adrenaline. Same as upstairs. We should get back before..."
The third infected suddenly twitched and lunged with a wet snarl, faster than the others. Its remaining arm swung wildly toward Elena.
She reacted instantly, pistol cracking once, twice. The shots were suppressed but still loud in the confined tunnel. The creature dropped, but not before its nails grazed Ted's shoulder, tearing fabric and drawing a thin line of blood.
Pain flared, but the Basic Undead Regeneration kicked in almost immediately, the shallow wound already beginning to close.
Elena lowered her pistol, breathing hard. "Damn it. That one was quicker." She turned the flashlight fully on Ted. "You're bleeding..."
"I'm fine," Ted cut in quickly, pressing his hand over the graze. The blood was already slowing. Too fast. He could feel the System converting the minor injury. "Just a scratch. We need to finish this and get back."
Elena hesitated, then nodded. She moved forward to check the body, giving Ted the split-second opening he needed.
While her back was turned, he dropped to one knee beside the fallen infected and quickly scooped a small amount of brain matter, forcing it down with grim determination. The surge of necro-energy hit like cold lightning, clean, powerful, satisfying the hunger completely.

The hunger vanished entirely for the moment. Ted felt stronger, his movements smoother. But the close call left his nerves raw.
Elena turned back just as he stood up, wiping his mouth discreetly with his sleeve. "You sure you're okay? That thing got you pretty good."
"Yeah. Looks worse than it is." He showed her the graze, already scabbed over thanks to regeneration and the fading buff. It looked like a normal shallow cut now. "See? Lucky again."
She studied him for a long second, flashlight beam lingering on his face. Ted kept his expression neutral, trying to look like any scared survivor running on pure luck and nerves. Inside, paranoia gnawed at him. How much had she seen? How long could he keep this up?
"Alright," she said finally, though her tone suggested she wasn't fully convinced. "But next time you hear something, you tell someone. We're not solo heroes here. Let's get back before they notice we're both gone."
They moved quickly toward the shelter door. Ted sealed it carefully behind them, resetting the override so it looked untouched. The main hall was still quiet, most survivors asleep or dozing. Their absence had gone unnoticed for now.
As they slipped back to their assigned areas, Elena paused near the cots.
"Get some rest, Ted. Tomorrow's going to be worse. Captain Reyes wants teams to scout upper levels for more supplies and intel on the city."
Ted nodded. "Yeah. Thanks for… not shooting me out there."
She gave a small, tired smile. "Don't make me regret it."
He lay down on one of the thin cots, staring at the concrete ceiling. The System remained silent for the moment, but he knew it wouldn't stay that way. With 89 Necro Essence, he could start thinking about spending some, maybe on a new skill or improving regeneration. But every upgrade risked making his changes more obvious: sharper teeth, colder skin, that faint rotting scent he'd have to mask with whatever scavenged deodorant or clothes he could find.
Marcus's group was on the far side of the hall. Ted caught the bully glancing his way once, eyes narrowed with that same arrogant suspicion from school days. The apocalypse hadn't changed everything.
Sleep came slowly, haunted by dreams of endless hunger and blue text floating in darkness.
When morning cycle lights flickered on, Captain Reyes called everyone together again.
"Listen carefully. We're low on medical supplies and ammunition. Two teams will head upstairs: one for the infirmary wing, one for the armory. Volunteers only. We need fighters who can handle themselves."
Marcus stepped forward immediately, his crew following. "We're in."
Elena raised her hand without hesitation. "Count me in."
Several others joined. Ted felt the weight of eyes on him, including Elena's expectant look and Marcus's dismissive smirk.
He could stay safe in the shelter… or risk going up where more infected waited. More chances to grow. More chances to slip up.
The System pinged softly.
*[New Main Quest Branch: Supply Run]*
*Participate in the upper level scout. Survive and return with useful resources.*
*Hidden Reward: Potential for significant Necro Essence if handled correctly.*
Ted swallowed hard, then raised his hand.
"I'll go too."
Captain Reyes nodded. "Good. Kane's team takes the armory. Voss and Harlan.. you're with the infirmary group. Move out in ten."
As the teams gathered weapons and flashlights, Ted felt the familiar mix of fear and strange anticipation. The shelter had bought him time, but real growth, real survival, waited upstairs among the dead.
And this time, he wouldn't be alone.
