Chapter 11 - Eyes that linger

The knock at the door had ruined the moment.

Or maybe it had saved it.

Tania still wasn't sure.

She stood near the bed, trying to steady her breathing while Devon moved toward the entrance with the kind of calm that only made him look more dangerous.

When he opened the door, two guards bowed quickly.

"My lord."

"What is it?" Devon asked.

"There's movement near the east wing. We thought it best to report it immediately."

Devon's expression hardened.

"I'll handle it."

The guards left at once.

He closed the door and turned back to Tania.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

The heat from earlier still filled the room, hanging between them like smoke after a fire.

Tania crossed her arms.

"You should go."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Are you dismissing me?"

"Yes."

That almost made him smile.

Almost.

Instead, he walked back toward her slowly until he stood right in front of her again.

"You were shaking a minute ago," he said quietly.

Tania lifted her chin.
