Chapter 11 - The Inner City

"Darn it… Where did I put those flyers...?" Aiko scratches her head as she looks around the main lobby of the E.S.C. building.

"Whatcha doin', Aiko-Chan?" Kazu asked while tilting his head.

Aiko got up and dusted her skirt off before turning towards Kazu with a smile.

"Hey Kazu-san, I'm trying to find some flyers I was assigned to hand out in the inner city."

She paused before continuing,

"They were about the upcoming revelation event!" She said excitedly.

Kazu hums, leaning against a nearby table. "Revelation event huh? That happens like every 6 months… Where is it taking place?"

Aiko taps her chin in thought, "I think it's taking place in the inner city, but I don't want to assume anything considering that's a place where there are no curses."

Just then, Fumiko walks into the lobby with an irritated look on her face. She comes out wearing a… white koi fish costume?

"Ugh, this is so stupid! Why do I have to be the mascot for the E.S.C.?" Fumiko whined out.

Aoto walks into the lobby looking even angrier. He is wearing a black koi fish costume!

"Why the hell am I the mascot for the revelation event!? This is bullshit!" He bellowed.

Aiko chuckles behind her hand.

"I think you two look adorable~" Aiko says while still giggling.

Aoto grumbles and crosses his arms, and Fumiko lets out a pout.

"So how long do you guys have to be out there in the inner city?" Kazu questioned.

"Maybe until 9 P.M., but hopefully we don't get called in for patrol." Aiko said while pulling out more flyers.

Kazu slowly nodded and he walked off to the other room.

"Ugh… Kazu-san is so lucky… he doesn't have to go out looking ridiculous like us." Fumiko complained.

"There's no time to be complaining, you brat. We need to get going before we have to go slaying curses." Aoto rolled his eyes as he walked to the front door.

The two girls followed suit and they all headed to the inner city of Kyoto.

[The inner city heart of Kyoto, and it is the safe zone where no curses spawn. The E.S.C. is located on the outer border so that if a curse were to ever get close to the inner city, the officers can take them out before anyone in the inner city spots them. The spawn rate of curses in the outer border is 85-103%. The reason it is 103% is because of the spawn of additional curse variants like anomalies. Crossing to the outer border is absolutely prohibited and if seen around those boundaries you will be detained for questioning.]

As the three leave for the inner city, Kazu stays behind to handle a separate commission.

"Shaba, give me intel on this report," Kazu says as he holds a sheet of paper up.

Shaba hums in thought, "It says there was an incident report about a man crossing into the outer border. He was trying to commit suicide by being eaten alive by curses… what a brutal way to go out."

Kazu frowns as he tosses the paper onto the nearby table.

"Does it say why he was suicidal? He had to do it for a reason, he wouldn't just walk out like that right?" Kazu questioned.

"Apparently he was going through a bunch of rough life issues. He lost his job, he was cheated on, got robbed, and suffered massive debt."

Kazu doesn't say anything immediately, he just stands there glancing at the table.

Eventually he snaps back to reality.

"Okay… I see. Our commission is to find his mangled body and make sure it doesn't become cursed. If we can retrieve it, we can give it a proper burial and have it purified." Kazu said with determination in his tone.

Kazu grabbed his gear and headed out towards the inner city.

Little did he know… this would be the last time he'd ever take a commission again…
