Chapter 264 - The Coupling Man

The river tunnel took control of the train's brakes.

Lio felt the pedal rise under his boot.

The maintenance engine kept moving.

"Brake is gone," he said.

Cassius answered from the rear car.

"Mine too. The panel wants my palm."

"Keep your hand off it."

"A stirring defense of personal liberty."

"Keep your hand off it, Cassius."

The joking stopped.

Water ran down both tunnel walls. The three cars followed a shallow grade beneath the river, gaining speed toward the old pump station.

Lio had inspected both couplings in the depot.

The front release used a six-turn wheel and a separation bar. The rear used four turns because the evidence car weighed less. Rust had eaten the painted instructions, so he wrote the counts on his paper medical tag.

Davi had laughed at him.

"Planning to uncouple us under a river?"

"Planning to know how if the train asks."

"Trains do not ask."
