Ned POV
History is not what survives.
History is what someone powerful failed to burn, or chose not to burn, or burned so dramatically that the smoke became scripture.
I knew this before I became the kind of man historians fear.
So when the old records began to trouble the model, I did not destroy them all.
I curated them.
A tyrant who hides every truth teaches the future to trust only rumor. A tyrant who leaves selected truth becomes the author of rebellion.
Order disliked the sentence when I said it aloud.
Rebellion authored remains rebellion.
"Everything authored remains dangerous."
Including empire.
"Especially empire."
We built the archive policy in the red hours before Coruscant. Not one archive. Not one vault that a brave child could break open with a stolen code and too much destiny. Thousands. Fragments distributed across monasteries, repair ledgers, legal ruins, forbidden songs, smuggler myths, old battle footage with seven missing seconds, Sith confession tablets, Jedi evacuation records, House Seresh judgments, Night mourning rolls, Moon route maps with names hidden in drift calculations.
The future hero would not find truth.
He would assemble it.
That mattered.
Assembled truth feels earned. Earned truth enters deeper than revelation. It becomes part of the one who carries it. It makes him responsible.
I wanted him responsible.
Do you hear the arrogance?
I do.
Now.
Then I called it preparation.
We left records of the Red King before the Golden Sun, but never enough to make me simple. We left Varis's victories, but not his first prayer. We left Yarnik. We left Nereth in broken angles, each account contradicting the others just enough to force attention. We left images of the Black King kneeling to a child. We left lists of planets saved by my law and planets silenced beneath it.
We left the Red Cross.
That one was Omega's demand.
"If they are going to hate you," she said, "let them know where you fed them too."
So the red cross survived in relief reports and station marks. Food. Medicine. Sanctuary. Surveillance. Empire. Mercy. Trap.
All true.
Truth is rarely a single blade. More often it is a table full of knives, and the hand that reaches for one must decide whether it wants to cut bread or skin.
There were records I did burn.
I will not pretend otherwise.
Names of children used in failed Sith rites. Locations of early Moon wombs. The first bodies that did not survive transformation into Night. Order's raw predictions of civilian sacrifice. Omega's private grief after Nereth. Renn's voice after he killed prisoners he later decided should have lived.
Some truths protect no one by being known.
That is what I told myself.
And because I was god, the sentence became law.
In one archive beneath a desert school, we placed a damaged account of Varis. Not the Reaper glorious. Not the traitor damned. A man in fragments: teacher, murderer, exile, witness. Enough for a mind like the boy's to wonder why I had let him live.
In another, we left a record of a woman made of ash who spoke to him in the waste. The file was corrupted by design. Three words remained recoverable.
Wait ten years.
Order asked why I allowed that phrase.
"Because he must know time was involved."
He may conclude you feared him.
"Good."
You did not yet know him.
"I knew enough."
I knew a shape. I knew a pressure. I knew the Force was gathering a rebuttal in human form. And I knew that when the rebuttal arrived, I wanted him armed with more than anger.
Anger is easy to defeat.
Understanding is harder.
That was why I let the records live.
Not mercy.
Not honesty.
Architecture again.
Always architecture.
Present me wants to forgive past me for that. He wants to say the archives prove some part of me still respected the truth. Perhaps they do. But respect is not innocence. I respected truth the way a swordsman respects an enemy blade. I studied its edge so I could decide where it entered.
The boy would one day find what I left.
He would think himself lucky.
He would think fate had opened doors.
He would not yet know I had measured the hinges.
