The moment the world starts closing in… standing still becomes death.
"Bring him home."
The words echoed across every screen in the bunker cold, controlled and final and then both armies moved at once. Gunfire exploded through the underground chamber as Dominion troops surged forward aggressively. At the same moment, The Gen-One units accelerated with terrifying speed from the lower corridors as concrete cracked beneath their movements and bodies slammed into walls. Muzzle flashes illuminated chaos in violent bursts as every single one of them was moving toward Jasper.
"MOVE!" Kane roared.
Stacy grabbed Jasper instantly as bullets ripped through the space where he'd stood a second earlier.
Mercer fired both barrels of his shotgun into an advancing Hollowed unit.
The thing barely staggered.
"…I REALLY hate these people!" He said. The underground chamber became complete madness as the Free Men fighters exchanged brutal close-range fire with Dominion soldiers while Gen-One units carved through both sides without hesitation.
They weren't choosing targets but they were clearing obstacles to reach Jasper. The emergency lights flickered violently red across smoke-filled tunnels as explosions shook ancient concrete and screams echoed endlessly underground and somewhere above them the wasteland burned. There was no hiding anymore neither escaping quietly because now the Dominion knew exactly who Jasper was and the Gen-Ones recognized him as one of their own and Obsidian Division, whatever remained of it wanted him alive.
The world had narrowed into one impossible truth; Everyone was hunting him now.
The hum inside his skull intensified beyond pain, it felt like the systems were trying to connect and more like invisible hands were forcing doors to open inside his mind as fragments flashed rapidly with underground labs, rows of children, interface testing and behavioral synchronization. A symbol repeated endlessly: GEN-ONE COMPATIBILITY FAILURE.
Jasper staggered hard and Stacy pulled him forward desperately.
"Stay focused!"
"I'm trying!"
But part of him wasn't there anymore, part of him was remembering. A Gen-One unit smashed through gunfire directly ahead of them, it was not attacking but rather it was blocking their path.
"Override candidate must be preserved," it stated calmly.
Mercer answered by firing point-blank into its chest. The impact launched it backward but it immediately stood again.
"Okay!" Mercer shouted.
"Definitely not human!"
"Lower tunnels!" the mysterious prisoner yelled.
"They'll trap us if we stay here!"
Kane looked at him like he'd lost his mind.
"You want to go DEEPER underground?!"
"No," the prisoner snapped.
"I want to survive!"
Another explosion shook the chamber violently.
The bunker ceiling cracked overhead as debris crashed onto fleeing survivors the entire facility was becoming unstable and time was running out fast. The prisoner led them through a side corridor beneath collapsing support beams while Dominion forces battled Gen-One units behind them. The deeper tunnels were older, much older as rust covered ancient blast doors and symbols faded along cracked walls. The long-dead systems flickered weakly alive as they passed and the deeper they moved the stronger the hum became.
Jasper could feel systems around him now, including power grids and security locks and Inactive surveillance like the bunker itself whispered through the network inside his head. That realization terrified him more than anything chasing them.
"You're connecting," the prisoner said quietly.
Jasper looked sharply at him.
"What does that mean?" He asked
"It means Obsidian built you correctly." The prisoner answered.
"No." Jasper said
The answer came instantly.
The prisoner's expression darkened.
"You can reject the purpose."
"But that doesn't erase it." The prisoner said.
She stepped beside Jasper immediately.
"You don't decide who he is."
The prisoner met her eyes calmly.
"No," he admitted.
"He does."
Gunfire echoed closer behind them as the Dominion was gaining ground again. The pale-eyed commander's voice suddenly echoed through the lower tunnel speakers.
"All units reroute containment priority."
There was a slight pause and then he continued
"Do not damage the subject's neural integrity."
Mercer blinked.
"That sentence somehow made this worse."
The survivors moved faster through ancient underground corridors while battle consumed the bunker behind them, children cried as wounded survivors stumbled and the Free Men fighters covered retreat paths desperately. Jasper realized something brutal that leadership meant people slowing down because of you and people also dying because they chose to follow you.
A wounded fighter collapsed nearby clutching his side.
"Go," he gasped.
"Leave me."
Mercer grabbed him anyway.
"We don't leave our own."
The fighter looked shocked briefly and then grateful. Even in the apocalypse humanity survived in fragments. The corridor suddenly opened into something massive. An underground transit station was buried beneath the bunker with old magnetic rail systems which stretched endlessly into darkness, dust covered abandoned transport platforms and mergency lights flickered weakly overhead and every monitor displayed the same symbol: OBSIDIAN DIVISION.
Kane stared around slowly.
"This place is huge…"
The prisoner nodded grimly.
"The bunkers were only surface containment."
Jasper's chest tightened.
"What's below this?"
The prisoner looked into the darkness.
"…The real facility."
The hum intensified violently again and then suddenly all the monitors flickered. There was static burst across screens and one message appeared repeatedly:
OVERRIDE SYNCHRONIZATION IN PROGRESS.
Jasper's breathing stopped briefly.
"No…"
The Gen-One units behind them accelerated instantly. The Dominion forces pushed harder too and both sides knew something was changing.
"We need transport NOW!" Stacy shouted.
The prisoner rushed toward the old rail controls desperately.
"Power's partially active…"
Mercer and Kane formed defensive positions while survivors piled onto abandoned train platforms and gunfire echoed closer.
Then the tunnel behind them exploded inward and then the Dominion troops breached first followed by the Hollowed units and directly behind them— Gen-One figures advanced silently through smoke. It was a collision of two armies, one corridor and a single target.
The old rail system groaned weakly to life as lights flickered along tracks disappearing into darkness. A train platform slowly powered up after decades underground.
"It'll move!" the prisoner shouted.
"But not for long!"
Everyone rushed toward it but just then, Jasper stopped moving. Stacy turned instantly.
"What are you doing?!"
Jasper looked toward the approaching armies and then toward the terrified survivors boarding the transport and then toward the control systems which was glowing around him and finally toward himself.
"They'll keep chasing us."
"Then we keep moving!"
"No," he said quietly.
"They'll keep chasing you because of me."
Because everyone knew he was right because the Dominion didn't care about the survivors, the Free Men weren't their real priority and even the Gen-Ones ignored everyone else. Everything revolved around Jasper now and every minute he stayed near them mor people died. The train engines roared louder as the tunnel shook violently. Dominion troops advanced through gunfire same with the Gen-One units which moved closer and then suddenly—Every screen in the station changed again.
The older man from Obsidian Division appeared once more and this time he was smiling directly at Jasper.
"You're beginning to understand."
Jasper's fists clenched.
"I'm not yours."
The man's smile widened slightly.
"No," he replied softly.
"You're ours."
Then every light in the underground station turned blue as hum inside Jasper's skull became deafening and the abandoned train doors behind him suddenly locked shut automatically separating him from Stacy, Kane and everyone else.
"JASPER!" Stacy screamed, slamming against the sealed doors.
The train platform began moving backward dragging Jasper deeper into the underground darkness alone while both armies stopped fighting completely… and watched him descend.
