Chapter 61 - ENEMY AWARENESS

The moment the enemy learns your name… survival changes forever.

"Welcome back, Jasper."

The voice echoed from the darkness below the bunker and was quite familiar and every person in the tunnel froze. The rows of blue lights beneath the opening blast doors moved slowly upward through darkness like a rising tide.

Mercer lowered his shotgun slightly.

"…I officially hate this bunker."

Nobody disagreed.

The emergency lights flickered weakly again, casting crimson shadows across the underground chamber. The figures emerging from beneath weren't Hollowed, the Dominion soldiers or the survivors. The mysterious prisoner's face drained completely of color.

"They kept them alive…"

Jasper looked sharply at him.

"What are they?"

The man swallowed hard.

"…Failures." He said.

The leading figure stepped fully into view with the shape of human body and face but something was wrong somewhere, it had a pale skin which was unnaturally smooth with eyes glowing faint blue beneath the darkness and when it looked directly at Jasper—The hum inside his skull triggered.

"Gen-One interface confirmed," it repeated calmly.

Stacy immediately stepped closer to Jasper.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered because they were too busy staring at the things climbing from below. Gunfire still echoed from upper tunnels as Dominion soldiers continued advancing deeper underground and the. Another threat approached from beneath and was trapped in the middle as the survivors had nowhere left to run.

Kane cursed under his breath.

"We're getting buried between nightmares."

The pale-eyed Dominion commander's voice suddenly returned through bunker speakers.

"All Dominion units prioritize subterranean containment immediately."

The Dominion sounded afraid for the first time but the single sentence changed everything.

Mercer noticed too.

"Oh now THAT is interesting."

More blue-eyed figures emerged from the lower levels silently, there was dozens of them now or maybe more deeper below and they all seem identical in posture.

The lead figure turned its head slightly toward Jasper.

"You survived surface exposure beyond expected duration."

Jasper's fists clenched.

"You know me."

"Yes."

"How?" Jasper asked

Then he responded

"You were built from us."

Silence detonated through the bunker.

"No," Stacy snapped instantly.

"That's not true."

The figure looked at her calmly.

"Emotional denial response acknowledged."

Mercer blinked slowly.

"Okay that's creepy as hell."

Jasper stepped backward instinctively,

"Built from us?" He thought

The phrase clawed through his mind violently

Nothing about his survival had ever been normal and now something beneath the bunker recognized him as family.

Every single mile across the apocalypse, escape, fight, strange instinct or impossible adaptations were all pointed toward one horrifying possibility: Jasper was never escaping the system. He was part of it.

Automatic fire erupted from upper corridors as Dominion troops finally pushed fully into the bunker chamber.

Free Men fighters answered instantly as the underground facility exploded into another battlefield but something strange happened as the blue-eyed figures didn't attack or retreat.Through smoke and gunfire—The pale-eyed Dominion commander entered the chamber personally, flanked by Hollowed units until he saw the blue-eyed figures and then even stopped cold.

"…Gen-One survivors."

The lead figure looked toward him slowly.

"Dominion authority recognized."

The commander's face darkened immediately.

"Containment breach should not have occurred."

The blue-eyed figure responded calmly:

"Containment failed forty-three years ago."

Forty-three years? The number did hit hard because it meant these things existed long before Jasper was born, long before the current wasteland and long before the Dominion rose to power.

The apocalypse suddenly felt much larger and older. The Dominion commander ignored everyone else now and focused entirely on Jasper.

"Primary subject must be secured immediately."

The blue-eyed figures shifted slightly at that statement.

"Override candidate belongs to Gen-One lineage."

Mercer looked between them.

"Anybody else getting very concerned right now?"

The Dominion troops hesitated for a while and so was the Free Men fighters and even Kane looked unsure who the enemy was it wasn't just another battle, it was history resurfacing as secrets older than the wasteland itself crawled out from underground.

"I worked on them."

Everyone turned sharply toward him and even the prisoner looked broken now, even ashamed

"Before the Collapse…Obsidian Division created adaptive human interfaces."

He looked directly at Jasper.

"You."

Jasper's chest tightened violently.

"No."

"You were designed to connect with system structures directly."

The hum inside Jasper's skull pulsed again like it was almost responding.

"He's still human," she snapped.

The prisoner nodded sadly.

"I know."

"Then stop talking about him like machinery!"

"I'm trying to explain why the Dominion fears him."

There was silence for a moment because that answer felt true. The blue-eyed lead figure stepped closer toward Jasper.

"Dominion systems evolved beyond acceptable parameters."

The commander immediately responded:

"Gen-One authority revoked."

"Revocation denied."

The commander's expression hardened.

"You no longer possess operational legitimacy."

The figure looked toward Jasper again.

"He does."

Everything stopped as the Dominion troops tightened formation instantly, all weapons were raised higher as the Hollowed gifted aggressively now. Enemy awareness is complete, not just Jasper's existence but also his importance and that changed the entire war. The pale-eyed commander finally drew his weapon fully without any observation or patience.

"Kill all non-essential personnel."

Stacy's eyes widened.

"What?!"

The commander pointed directly at Jasper.

"Secure the override candidate intact."

The bunker erupted into violence instantly as Dominion forces opened fire and the Free Men fighters answered. The blue-eyed Gen-One figures moved for the first time and fast enough to blur. One Dominion soldier disappeared in a spray of blood before anyone fully saw the movement and a another got slammed into concrete hard enough to crack walls.

Mercer stared in shock.

"…Okay maybe THEY'RE the problem."

The hum inside Jasper's skull became overwhelming with signals, commands and systems trying to synchronize with him and terrifyingly, part of him understood them as they all communicate to target acquisition, evaluate threat and command inheritance pathways.

He staggered hard.

Stacy caught him immediately.

"Stay with me!" She said

"I can hear them…" Jasper replied.

The Dominion knew who he was, Gen-Ones knew who he was, the Free Men saw what he could do and even the survivors were staring at him differently now not just like a leader or like a survivor but like something dangerous and then suddenly every screen inside the bunker flickered alive simultaneously. Static screamed across ancient monitors and then one symbol appeared everywhere; OBSIDIAN DIVISION

The older man from Jasper's vision appeared calmly across every screen with his hands folded behind his back watching and when he spoke the entire bunker fell silent.

"After all these years…"

His eyes locked directly onto Jasper.

"…the final interface awakens."

Jasper's blood froze because the man smiled warmly and proudly like a father seeing his child again. Then the man gave one impossible command; "Bring him home."

Every Gen-One unit immediately turned toward Jasper.

At the same time every Hollowed unit did too, two different armies with a single target.

"Jasper."
