Chapter 27 - The Choice To Save

In a broken world, every choice costs something and sometimes saving someone else means risking everyone.

"Help me break it."

Jasper's voice cuts through the panic and the wall trembled under impact as hands slam into the stone, they kicked it and also striked with their weapons and then there was a thin line, crack bean to appear, behind them sound of raiders grew louder and more relentless now.

"Faster!" Someone shouted.

And suddenly the wall gave way and the stone collapsed inwardly. There was a burst of dust and darkness

"Move!" Jasper commanded

Without much hesitation, one by one they pushed through into the unknown. Jasper stayed last again watching the tunnel behind and raiders break through the bend with eyes locking with his, he stepped back and disappeared through the opening and the wall partially collapsed behind him block the path. As the group stumbled forward, exhausted and barely holding together, they entered a natural cavern and then the heard weak and desperate voices, everyone froze because they recognized it instantly, they were survivors. The group reacted immediately.

"No."

"We keep moving." Stan said.

Others nodded quickly with fear driving logic now.

"We can't risk it."

"They could be bait."

"We don't have supplies!" Another shouted.

Tension returned fast and sharp, as Jasper listened

to the voice, a child cried and that changed everything for him. Stacy looked at him with no words needed and they both understood the weight of the moment. Stan stepped forward again.

"If we go on there we die." Stan Said

"if we don't.." jasper responded.

He didn't complete the sentence because the meaning was clear, that they wouldn't die anyway. buy just slower. The Argument exploded.

"We can barely survive ourselves!"

"We're not heroes!"

"This isn't a out being heroes!" Stacy snapped. As all eyes turned to her, her voice was tronger now and sharpened by everything they're been through.

"This is about who we are." Stacy said.

"Who are they now?" Stan shook his head.

"We don't even know if it's real!"

"It's real." Jasper said.

"How do you know ?" He continued.

Jasper's answer was simple

"Because fear doesn't sound like that."

And then the child cried again but this time weaker.

Time was running out for them too, as some stepped back, others stayed where they are frozen between two choices whether to run…or to risk everything. Stacy stepped beside Jasper and concluded.

"we're going and anyone who doesn't want to should stay."

After a few seconds has passed, one stepped forward and then another. Stan hesitated for a while and then he looked at the tunnel and the darkness ahead, then he followed not because he agrees but because he won't survive alone. They moved towards the voices carefully with weapons ready, every step was tensed as the cavern narrowed again leading a small opening with faintly fire flickers and survivors inside. Jasper signaled a slow approach and they saw them. They were three adults and one starving child who was barely alive. The child looked up first with eyes wide open, hope and fear colliding.

"Please…" she said

Stacy moved first and knelt gently beside them

"You're okay now we've got you."

The adults flinched but didn't resist because they were too weak. Jasper scanned the area quickly with no immediate threat but something felt off and too quite again.

"We don't stay long," he said quietly "

The group nodded and started helping out quickly by sharing what they had, water, support and strength. Time was ticking and all of a sudden Jasper saw too many fresh footprints and his expression changed instantly.

"Stacy." He called out.

And Stacy looked up and saw it too. A slow clap echoed from the cavern entrance and everyone froze. When they eventually turned the same raiders stood there calm and smiled again. He wasn't alone as there were dozens behind him with weapons raised, all eyes were locked on the group and the survivors they just saved.

"Compassion…"he said softly

"That's what makes you predictable."

Almost impressed, Jasper's jaw tightened because now there was no escape path behind them no hidden route ahead or even much time left.

As the raiders stepped forward and the cavern filled with the sound of weapons being raised—one brutal truth crashed down on Jasper; saving them…may have just doomed them all.
