Chapter 33 - Internal Conflict

Enemies in front of you are dangerous but the ones beside you can kill you within a moment.

"You're drinking our water."

There was silence for a moment and the group froze in mid-motion as hands still held cupped water and breathed very shallowly now, only their eyes shifted. They thought it's not about survival anymore but ownership of territory. Jasper stood slowly with his movement quite measured out and controlled, he already knew that one wrong signal and everything would turn violent instantly. The armed group watched him carefully. There were about five of them positioned strategically with their weapons now but ready. Those groups of survivors were organized and disciplined. Their leader stepped forward with his eyes locked on Jasper.

"You didn't stumble here by accident." He said, his voice was calm

"People don't just find this place."

"We didn't know!" Someone blurted out.

"We're just trying to survive!"

"We'll leave…we didn't mean to…"

Panic had started talking now and panic sounded weak. Jasper raised a hand

"Enough." His voice cutted through the noise again but this time it didn't land properly because fear had already spread.

"Enough?" Mike asked

With a fear breaking through his exhaustion

"You got us into this!"

Those words hitted harder than the threat in front of them.

"You choose this path!"

Others started nodding

"We followed you!" They all agreed

"We trusted you!"

"This isn't the time" Stacy stepped in, her voice ver sharp now.

"When is it then?" Someone snapped back

"When we are all dead?"

Some stepped back and others stepped forward as the group divided into two out of fear which they turned into blame. The Armed group watched everything, because the group was tearing itself apart for them and they did not need to act. Jasper turned slowly and faced the group. His eyes moved across every face.

"You're right."

"Choose this direction."

"I brought you here." He told them

They tension among them heightened

"But you are close to following."

"No one here is a prisoner." His voice sharpened slightly.

"If you want to leave…"

He gestured towards the wasteland

"Go." He concluded.

The truth was exposed, that leaving wasn't freedom. It meant death.

"So that's it?" Someone said.

"Follow you to die?

Jasper shook his head slightly

"No."

"It's to survive together…or not at all."

That line hit deeper than anything else because they've already seen both options and not everyone accepted it. One man stepped forward again. The same one pushing the hardest.

"I'm done taking orders."

And then he turned to a few others and said.

"We can find a other way.

Stacy moved beside Jasper positioning herself beside him.

"Splitting now gets people killed." She said firmly.

"Staying might too," the man fired back

He was not wrong and that was what made the situation worse. The armed leader finally spoke again.

"Interesting."

At that moment, all eyes shifted towards him because they forgot that he was still there watching them.

"You're negotiating with yourselves…"

"Same as us ."

A faint smirk touched his face and then reality slammed back in. The confusion had made them weaker by each second. Jasper stepped back into the center.

"You want to lead?"

He looked directly at the man who challenged him

"Then lead." He said

The man froze slightly because that was not what he expected.

"Take your people."

"But understand this…"

He gestured towards the armed group, his voice was calm now.

"Out here…decisions have consequences."

The man hesitated as the weight landed instantly. He looked at the armed. The man hesitated for a while and looked at the terrain and at the armed leader and then the weakened group, doubt cracked through his anger. The armed leader clapped once, he was not amused anymore but was decisive.

"Enough" he said

"You' ve got three options."

The group went still again

" you leave..." He continued as he pointed toward the wasteland.

"You stay…and work for water."

"Or…"

His eyes landed directly on Jasper

"We decide you're too much of a risk to keep alive."

There were no good options, only choices with consequences as silence dropped like a blade. As the group stands divided, exhausted, and on the edge…all eyes slowly turn to Jasper again with one unavoidable truth; whether they like it or not…their survival depended on him.
