Chapter 29 - Chapter 28: The Alchemist’s Trap

The tension in the estate had reached a boiling point. Cheng spent the morning in the forge, not working on steam valves, but on a small, glass vial of chemical reagents. The System flickered with a sharp, azure light, confirming his theory.

[THREAT VERIFIED: Arsenic Derivative detected in the tea leaves.]

[COUNTER-MEASURE: Reagent 402 - The Color-Change Revelation.]

As the sun began to set, the household gathered for the evening meal. Lady Xin sat at the long table, her eyes tracking the young maid who carried a steaming jade pot of jasmine tea toward Heng. The maid's hands were trembling—the hallmark of a coerced assassin.

"The tea smells divine tonight," Lady Xin said, her voice smooth as silk. "A special blend for our precious Omega?"

"Actually," Cheng interrupted, his voice echoing with a dangerous, cold authority as he stood up. He took a small dropper from his sleeve. "I've developed a way to enhance the flavor. A simple drop of science to bring out the purity."

Before the maid could pour, Cheng squeezed a single drop of his reagent into the pot. Within seconds, the golden liquid turned a violent, murky black. The room went silent. The maid dropped the tray, the porcelain shattering against the stone floor.

"Purity?" Cheng stepped toward Lady Xin, his Alpha aura flaring so intensely that the candles flickered. "It seems your 'shadows' are clumsy, Lady Xin. This tea was laced with a slow-acting poison. Tell the Emperor that my Omega is under my protection, and my protection is absolute. If I see another spy, I won't just turn the tea black—I'll turn the Imperial Palace into a graveyard of steam and fire."

Xin's face went pale. She had underestimated the "Scholar." He wasn't just building machines; he was building a defense that even the gods would fear.

The Heartwarming Coronation

Once the guards had dragged the spy away and the estate was locked down, Cheng found Heng in the master bedroom. The Omega was shaken, his hands clutching a silk pillow as if it were a shield.

Cheng didn't walk in with his usual force. He moved slowly, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling Heng into his lap. He tucked Heng's head under his chin, holding him with a fierce, trembling tenderness.

"I'm sorry you had to see that," Cheng whispered into his hair. "I'm sorry the world I'm building is still so dangerous for you."

"I don't care about the danger," Heng breathed, his arms wrapping tightly around Cheng's neck. "As long as I'm in your light, the shadows don't matter."

Cheng's hands moved over Heng's body with a raw, desperate hunger—not born of dominance, but of a man who had almost lost his soul. He focused on the texture of skin against silk, his mouth mapping the curve of Heng's shoulder and the pulse-point at his throat. The scent of rain and heated Alpha musk filled the room, the friction of their bodies creating a thick, intoxicating haze of desire. Every touch was an erotic promise of the reclamation that would come once the threshold was crossed. It was a heartwarming, high-tension surrender that left them both yearning for the night to never end.
