Chapter 35 - Chapter 34: The Iron Rain

The screech of metal on metal was deafening as the Clockwork Sentinel's talons ripped through the reinforced roof of the carriage. Splinters of wood showered Cheng and Heng like jagged rain. Through the jagged hole, a single red optical lens glowed with a cold, mechanical hunger.

"Engage defensive protocols," the Sentinel's voice was a flat, synthesized drone.

Cheng didn't hesitate. He shoved Heng toward the floor of the carriage, shielding him with his own body as the Sentinel's heavy brass arm smashed through the opening. "Lin, steer the horses! Keep us steady!" Cheng roared, his hands moving with the precision of a master clockmaker even as the world around him descended into chaos.

He pulled the specialized Pressure-Bolt from his belt—a prototype he had been refining in secret. It wasn't just a gun; it was a concentrated burst of super-heated steam compressed into a magnetic slug.

The Heartwarming Shield

As the carriage swerved violently, Heng grabbed onto Cheng's tunic, his face pale but his eyes burning with defiance. "Cheng, the energy... I can feel its clockwork core. It's cycling at a high frequency on the left side!"

Cheng looked at him, a flash of pride crossing his face despite the danger. He leaned down, pressing a hard, brief kiss to Heng's forehead—a silent promise of survival. "That's my Scholar. Hold tight, I'm taking it down."

Cheng stood up into the path of the claw, his Alpha instincts heightening his reflexes to an inhuman level. He aimed the Pressure-Bolt at the Sentinel's left joint and fired. The explosion was silent but devastating; the steam expanded instantly, warping the bronze gears and sending the Sentinel flying off the roof into the dark canyon below.

The Sinking City

The carriage didn't stop. They raced through the night until the trees began to thin, replaced by ruins of white marble half-submerged in a vast, black swamp. This was the Sinking City, the graveyard of the Old Dynasties.

"We're here," Lin whispered, slowing the horses. "The Sentinels can't track us through the stagnant water—the sulfur masks your energy signature."

As they stepped out of the battered carriage, the air was thick with mist and the smell of ancient damp. From the shadows of a crumbling bell tower, a group of figures emerged. They weren't soldiers, and they weren't rebels. They wore long, flowing robes stained with swamp mud and masks made of ivory.

"The Core has arrived," one of them hissed. "But the price of sanctuary is a secret for a secret. Lord Cheng, are you ready to learn what your Omega really is?"
