Chapter 26 - Forever and Always

The morning sun spilled golden light across the city, making everything feel warm and alive.

I sat at the small café near the park, sipping my coffee, feeling a nervous excitement bubbling in my chest. Today wasn't just any day. Today was the day we would finally step into the world as us, without hiding, without apologies, without hesitation.

Ethan arrived, grinning, holding two steaming cups of coffee. "Morning," he said, sliding one across to me.

"Morning," I replied, a little breathless. "You look… perfect."

He smirked, brushing his thumb across my hand. "You make it easy."

We walked through the city streets hand in hand, the slight pressure of his fingers against mine making my heart race. Everywhere we went, I felt the thrill of being together, open and unafraid.

Eventually, we reached the small park where we had shared so many stolen moments—our first long walk, the first soft kiss, the day Ethan confessed he loved me.

"This is it," he said softly, stopping in the middle of the path. His gaze was serious now, intense in a way that made my chest tighten. "No more hiding, Lara. Are you ready?"

I swallowed hard, nodding. "Yes. I'm ready."

He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Good. Because I've been waiting for this too long."

Ethan took a deep breath and then, in front of a few early morning joggers and café-goers, he dropped to one knee.

"Lara," he said, his voice steady but full of emotion. "From the moment I met you, I knew you were someone special. Every laugh, every stolen glance, every quiet moment… it all brought me here. You are my heart, my home, my forever. Will you be mine, always?"

Tears welled in my eyes. "Yes," I whispered, barely able to get the words out.

He grinned, slipping a simple but elegant ring onto my finger. "Always," he murmured, pulling me close into a long, gentle kiss.

Around us, strangers smiled, some clapping softly. Maya appeared from behind a tree, waving enthusiastically.

"You two are ridiculous," she shouted, laughing, though the tears in her eyes betrayed her emotions. "I can't believe it took this long!"

I laughed through my tears, hugging her. "You accept us?"

"Finally!" she said, rolling her eyes, though she pulled me close in a warm embrace. "Just… keep him happy, alright?"

Ethan pulled me back into his arms, resting his forehead against mine. "I promise. Every day. Forever."

I felt my heart swell. "Forever," I echoed.

The rest of the day passed in a haze of celebration, laughter, and soft kisses. Friends and family joined us, showering us with congratulations. Every smile, every hug, every word of encouragement made the happiness feel real, solid, and eternal.

Later, as the sun began to set, Ethan and I walked to the small pier by the lake. The golden-orange sky reflected in the water, painting everything with a soft, magical glow.

"I can't believe we're finally here," I whispered, resting my head on his chest.

"Me neither," he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. "But this… this is exactly where we belong. Together."

We stayed there for a long while, wrapped in each other's arms, watching the sun dip below the horizon. The world felt quiet, perfect, and ours.

"You know," I murmured, lifting my head to look at him, "I never imagined love could feel like this. Complete. Safe. Exciting. Real."

"I do," he whispered, brushing a soft kiss across my lips. "And I promise, it'll only get better. Every day, Lara. You and me. Always."

I smiled, feeling the warmth of his hand on mine, the steady beat of his heart against mine, and the promise of forever lingering in every touch, every glance, every soft word.

And in that moment, I knew, without a doubt…. We had faced all the doubts, the teasing, the tension, and the slow-burning uncertainty.

We had survived misunderstandings, playful interruptions, and moments of fear.

We had loved each other completely.
