Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – The House That Watches

The feeling from that morning never left him.

Even now, as the Ravencourt estate moved in quiet perfection, something beneath it felt… wrong.

Not dangerous.

Not yet.

But present.

Watching.

The dining hall was vast, lined with tall windows that allowed pale morning light to spill across the polished floor. Everything was arranged with precision—silverware aligned, chairs perfectly placed, not a single detail out of order.

At the head of the table sat Kaelen.

Relaxed, as always.

Aleron sat across from him, posture straight, movements controlled as he reached for his cup.

"You're quieter than usual," Kaelen said, glancing at him.

Aleron didn't look up immediately.

"I'm thinking."

Kaelen smirked. "That's dangerous."

Aleron lifted his gaze. "You said thinking is better than losing."

"Depends on what you're thinking about."

A brief pause.

Then—

"The estate," Aleron said.

Kaelen raised an eyebrow. "What about it?"

Aleron hesitated.

"…It feels different."

Kaelen leaned back slightly, studying him now.

"Different how?"

Aleron searched for the words.

"Like… something is there."

Silence.

Subtle.

But real.

Kaelen held his gaze for a moment longer—then shrugged it off.

"You're overthinking."

Maybe.

But Aleron wasn't convinced.

Not far from them, a man stood quietly.

Albert.

The head butler of the Ravencourt estate.

His posture was flawless. His expression, neutral.

Yet his attention was absolute.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every shift in tone.

Observed.

The estate carried on as it always did.

Servants moved with silent efficiency. Guards rotated their posts. Doors opened and closed without sound.

Perfection.

But perfection, Aleron was beginning to realize, often hid something deeper.

He walked alone through the inner halls later that day.

Not wandering.

Not aimless.

Just… following instinct.

His steps slowed as he turned a corner.

Then stopped.

Someone was there.

At the far end of the corridor—half-veiled by shadow—a figure stood motionless.

Watching him.

Aleron's grip tightened slightly.

"…Who's there?"

No answer.

The figure didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't react.

Aleron stepped forward—

And in the next blink—

Gone.

"You shouldn't wander too far alone, young master."

The voice came from behind.

Calm.

Measured.

Aleron turned.

Albert stood there, as composed as ever.

Aleron frowned slightly. "There was someone here."

Albert tilted his head just enough to acknowledge the statement.

"Was there?"

Aleron looked back down the corridor.

Empty.

"…Yes."

Albert stepped closer, his presence quiet yet firm.

"The estate is vast," he said gently. "It can… mislead the senses."

Aleron didn't respond.

Because that wasn't what he felt.

Albert studied him for a moment longer.

Then—

"You see more than most," he added.

Aleron's eyes shifted.

"…What do you mean?"

A faint smile.

Polite.

Controlled.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with. Not yet."

Not yet.

The words lingered longer than they should have.

By evening, the sky had darkened.

Clouds gathered overhead, thick and unmoving. The air felt heavier.

A storm was coming.

In a secluded section of the estate—

Hidden from sight—

Albert stood beside another figure.

A woman.

Her presence was… difficult to grasp.

Like she wasn't entirely there.

"Did he notice?" she asked quietly.

Albert nodded once.

"He felt it."

A brief silence followed.

Then the woman exhaled softly.

"He's early."

Albert's gaze sharpened, just slightly.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then—

"We'll continue observation."

The woman tilted her head.

"And Kaelen?"

"He knows nothing," Albert replied.

"And he must remain that way."

Lightning flashed across the sky.

For a single moment—

The shadows stretched too far.

Too long.

Too unnatural.

Aleron stood by his window once more.

Looking out into the darkening horizon.

Thinking.

Feeling.

That same presence.

Closer now.

Clearer.

Something in this house was watching him.

Not as a threat.

Not as an ally.

But as something in between.

Something… waiting...
