Chapter 247: Mew Appears! I'm Your Father!

"Eh? Mister Mammon, you're catching them to make them main battlers?"

Rika was rather taken aback at Mammon's words — though a second later she realized what a silly question that was. Regirock and Regice were legendary Pokémon, after all. Of course Mammon would want to catch them.

"Not exactly. I'm not particularly fond of these two, but I can catch and keep them for now — if any of my subordinates take a liking to them later, they can try their hand at officially claiming them," Mammon said, shaking his head.

Honestly, he had zero interest in the legendary giants — especially this trio: rock-pillar, ice-pillar, and steel-pillar. Mostly because all three had frankly abstract, awkward designs, and their power level didn't measure up either — relative to other legendaries, anyway.

If he had to pick favorites, the electric-pillar and the dragon-pillar were at least decent. Purely on raw strength, the electric-pillar was easily the strongest of the legendary giants. And the dragon-pillar, Regidrago, at least had its own signature move — Dragon Energy, colloquially "the Dragon Breath." What did Regirock and friends have going for them?

Plus, Mammon was rather fond of the dragon-pillar — it suited his aesthetic sense, and its pose while using Dragon Energy looked genuinely striking.

"..." Rika fell silent. Was this really the standard treatment for a Rocket member? Just handing out legendary Pokémon like that?

Mammon turned his attention to Regirock and Regice, who had already dropped into battle stances. As the appointed guardians of the Tree of Beginning and Mew, they drove off any human who dared approach — both to protect the Tree, and, in a sense, to protect the humans themselves. The Tree's internal self-defense mechanism was genuinely terrifying; no matter how strong you were, once inside, unless you could outright demolish the entire Tree, you were as good as dead.

"Reggi~"

The seven dots on Regirock's head began to glow. Its two thick arms swung, and jagged shards of stone materialized in the air — Rock-type Stone Edge.

"Darkrai," Mammon called out calmly.

Darkrai's blue eyes stayed perfectly still and calm as its nightmare-like form drifted, utterly silent, toward Regirock and Regice.

"Reggi~!" Seeing the enemy dare to close the distance, Regirock fired off Stone Edge without hesitation. Blade-sharp stones shot forward, aimed straight at Darkrai.

But Darkrai simply tilted to one side, slipping past the first wave of stones with ease, then wove through the air like a dance step, dodging another volley entirely — effortless, unhurried, as casual as a stroll in the park.

BOOM BOOM BOOM!

The stones detonated on impact, kicking up billowing dust — but Darkrai remained completely untouched, weaving through the barrage like a phantom, dodging every single shard.

Godlike footwork.

Rika sucked in a breath at the sight, utterly floored — this was just absurd!

"Dark Pulse," Darkrai intoned, its expression still calm and distant, black claws swaying gently as dark energy crackled between them. It was closing the distance with every second.

"Reggi~!" Unable to stand seeing this pitch-black interloper showing off against its sibling, Regice gathered ice-blue light before itself — Ice-type Ice Beam.

But before the beam could fire, a wave of black energy shot out first, striking Regice square in the chest. The powerful Dark Pulse detonated, sending Regice flying and slamming it into the ground.

Seeing its sibling struck down, Regirock let out another low cry, raising both thick, glowing arms and bringing them down toward the now-close Darkrai — Fighting-type Hammer Arm!

Useless. Darkrai simply twisted its body again, naturally and fluidly, letting the powerful blow whistle past its face and miss entirely. Dodged, once again.

Darkrai aimed its right claw at Regirock's flank, black energy crackling once more — Dark Pulse again.

BOOM!

The Dark Pulse fired, its powerful impact sending Regirock flying too — landing squarely on top of Regice. Regice, gritting through the pain and just starting to rise, got flattened right back down by its falling sibling.

The next instant, dark energy tore through the air and struck both Regirock and Regice simultaneously.

A violent explosion rang out, thick smoke billowing outward. Darkrai swept a claw, stirring up wind that cleared the dust away — revealing, in a fresh crater, the two legendary giants lying utterly motionless.

"So strong!!" Rika gasped, stunned.

This was genuinely too much — the opponents were legendary giants, legendary Pokémon! And yet Darkrai had beaten them this effortlessly. Had the whole fight even lasted a full minute?

Was Darkrai simply that overwhelming, or were these two "giants" just that weak? For a moment Rika honestly couldn't tell — the gap in power was so visible, so enormous, that it was hard to process. She even suspected Darkrai hadn't been fighting seriously at all.

"Good work, Darkrai." Mammon nodded, satisfied, pulling out two empty Ultra Balls. The outcome didn't surprise him in the slightest — the Tree's three "giants" had never really been all that strong to begin with. If they could barely hold their own against Ash right after he'd just finished his Hoenn journey, how strong could they possibly be?

Mammon's Darkrai, on the other hand, was genuinely Champion-tier at the very top of the scale. He honestly had no idea how Sham had originally managed to catch a Darkrai like this one — must have been some fluke or special circumstance, because if Sham had caught it properly, he surely wouldn't have used it so poorly.

Darkrai's expression stayed as unreadable as ever, its gaze drifting toward the distance, where a gray, metallic Pokémon was approaching.

"Nice, all present and accounted for — that was fast," Mammon said, the corner of his mouth lifting. That was the steel-pillar, Registeel — it must not have been far off, to arrive this quickly.

"Reggi~!" Registeel's low cry carried a distinctly metallic ring.

And then... it took no time at all before Darkrai had stacked Registeel neatly on top of the other two. All three legendary pillars, thoroughly wrecked.

"Time to throw some balls, then." Mammon tossed a Poké Ball at Registeel, sitting on top of the pile.

"Mister Mammon is just too amazing~!" Rika's eyes sparkled, gazing at him with open admiration — he'd beaten three legendary Pokémon this easily! The man she'd fallen for really was strong beyond belief! Hehe~

Rika's face glowed, thoroughly pleased with herself, even though Mammon had already made clear he had no intention of keeping these three legendary pillars for himself. But she wasn't surprised anymore — if Darkrai could sweep all three in one string like that, no wonder Mammon didn't rate them highly.

Emm... though she did wonder whether she herself could beat them. Honestly, Rika had no real read on how strong Regirock and the others actually were — the fight had ended far too quickly to tell.

Soon, with Dark Mewtwo's psychic assistance, Mammon successfully secured all three legendary giants.

"Good — this'll give the little ones something more to work toward," Mammon said, nodding in satisfaction. He might not think much of Regirock and its siblings, but plenty of others would. Legendary Pokémon, after all — surely they'd give Nora, Touko, and Wulin plenty of extra motivation to put their lives on the line for the company.

That's right — this was the appeal of legendary Pokémon.

Just then, Dark Mewtwo suddenly lifted its head, gaze fixed on the direction of the Tree of Beginning, the deep violet flames in its eyes flaring wildly.

"Mammon. It's here."

A low telepathic voice echoed in Mammon's mind.

Mammon raised an eyebrow — he'd already seen it too. A ball of pink light was streaking toward them at high speed, coming to a stop in the air just ahead of the group.

"Myaa~"

A bright, childlike cry rang out. The pink glow gradually faded, revealing a small, cat-like Pokémon, entirely pink, floating before the three of them. Adorable in shape, with clear blue eyes and an especially long tail — nearly twice the length of its own body.

"Mew!" Rika's eyes widened slightly. This was Kanto's legendary Mythical Pokémon — Mew!

Caitlin, too, gazed at the cute little pink cat with fresh curiosity — so this was Mew?

Dark Mewtwo, however, stared fixedly at Mew, the flames in its eyes flickering restlessly — clearly, its emotions weren't entirely under control.

"Myaa?"

Mew chewed on one of its own fingers, letting out a puzzled cry, sweeping its gaze across the group before finally settling on Mammon's hand. No mistake about it — those pillars were inside those balls. Scent didn't lie.

Mew had been off playing with its toys inside the Tree when it suddenly felt the presence of its three pillar-guardians weaken — and then vanish entirely. It had shot out immediately, because those three pillars had been specially crafted by the Big Pillar just to serve as its doorkeepers! Sure, in Mew's eyes they were kind of dopey, but they'd been left behind as a token of a dear friend's affection, and Mew really didn't want anything bad to happen to them.

But Mew genuinely hadn't expected them to get caught by a human.

Mew gnawed on its own claw, looking rather conflicted and troubled. It was debating whether to try negotiating with this human — see if it could get the pillars back. Sure, they were a bit dim, but they were still gifts left behind by a good friend.

But the next instant, sensing something, Mew suddenly turned its attention to Dark Mewtwo.

"Myaa?" Mew tilted its head in confusion, its small body drifting slowly down until it hovered right in front of Dark Mewtwo, studying this dark, hulking figure carefully — as if it couldn't quite believe something, or sensed something was off.

The pink cat drifted closer, circling Dark Mewtwo several times, and finally pressed its nose right up against it, sniffing insistently, over and over.

Dark Mewtwo's expression stayed blank, watching this cat with absolutely zero sense of personal space — a handful of visibly bulging veins appearing on its forehead.

"Weird — why do you smell like me, myaa?" Mew's clear, ringing telepathy sounded out. It scratched its own head, utterly baffled, looking positively adorable while doing it.

But Mew simply couldn't figure it out, no matter how it turned the question over. It had genuinely caught its own scent on this hideous dark thing.

That... couldn't be right, could it?

"Who are you, myaa?" Mew asked.

Dark Mewtwo's expression remained flat as it looked down at this small creature that was, strictly speaking, on a genetic level, essentially its mother — or father.

"I'm your father."

Dark Mewtwo delivered the line with zero emotion whatsoever.

The pink cat froze mid-motion, staring blankly at Dark Mewtwo. For a moment, its brain seemed to just... stop working.
