Chapter 248 - Chapter 248: Mew: Mammon's a Good Guy! Mewtwo's So Rude!

Chapter 248: Mew: Mammon's a Good Guy! Mewtwo's So Rude!

"I'm your father."

The moment Dark Mewtwo's low, flat telepathic voice rang out, the whole clearing went dead silent.

Mew's little brain short-circuited on the spot.

All three of Mammon's group wore expressions of pure disbelief.

Wait — had Dark Mewtwo lost its mind or something?

Rika was stunned. "I'm your father"?! What kind of trash talk was that?!

Caitlin was equally shocked. Mammon, meanwhile, just looked bemused — sure, he'd told Dark Mewtwo before that if it ever felt genuinely annoyed by Mew, it was welcome to give it some lip. But even he hadn't expected Dark Mewtwo to go this hard, short-circuiting Mew with a single sentence.

It took a good long moment before Mew finally snapped back to itself, gnawing on its own claw as it stared at Dark Mewtwo. If it had eyebrows right now, they'd be furrowed tight.

Its father? No, wait — that couldn't be right. It didn't have a father or a mother.

"Wait a second! You're insulting me, myaa!"

Realization hit Mew all at once — this ugly thing had just been mocking it. Had to be. Absolutely had to be.

"You— you— you—!!!"

Mew was so mad its telepathy actually started stuttering.

"You're so rude!! How can you be this rude, myaa?!"

Mew was furious — practically ready to stomp its little feet. But its mind was naturally so pure and unspoiled that it genuinely didn't know how to insult something back.

Dark Mewtwo's expression stayed blank, watching Mew for a long moment. It noticed the resentment and hurt swimming in the little creature's eyes, and felt something twinge inside despite itself.

How to put it... it suddenly felt like it deserved to die a little —

Snapping at something this innocent and pure — had it gone a bit too far?

But actually bowing its head and apologizing to Mew? That, Dark Mewtwo clearly wasn't capable of. So it chose silence instead, its gaze drifting pointedly away from Mew entirely.

"No, no way! You have to apologize to me today, or I'll have to teach you a lesson, myaa!"

Mew was mad. Very mad. Consequences would follow.

"Oh?"

If Mew had just left it alone, fine — but hearing that only lit Dark Mewtwo's temper right back up.

"Want to fight? I'd be delighted." Dark Mewtwo, naturally, wasn't backing down, answering without a shred of hesitation.

Pink psychic energy welled up around Mew, its clear, doe-like eyes flaring with pink light. Clearly, it meant business now too.

The deep violet flames in Dark Mewtwo's eyes roared to life in turn — it had been waiting a long time for a real fight with Mew.

The air went tense in an instant.

"Whoa, hold on, hold on — you two can fight later if you want."

Mammon cut in immediately, breaking the standoff. He had no problem with Mew and Dark Mewtwo wanting to throw down — but he'd drawn Mew out for actual business first. Once that was settled, the two of them could go play all they liked.

At Mammon's words, Dark Mewtwo silently let its aura fade. Of everyone here, Mammon was the one it trusted most.

"Myaa?" Seeing Dark Mewtwo stand down, Mew looked at Mammon, puzzled.

"Oh right — the three pillars are still with you, myaa!"

Mew suddenly remembered, immediately setting aside the whole "insult" incident.

"You mean Regirock and the others? That's right — though I've already caught them, actually," Mammon said, flashing a bright smile.

"Uhh— so, um, could you let them go, myaa?" Mew drifted right up close to Mammon, its voice unbearably cute, with maybe a hint of deliberate, weaponized adorableness. "They're really important to me, myaa. Big Pillar left them for me — if they went missing, Big Pillar would definitely scold me, y'know?"

Its telepathy carried a note of genuine hurt — but partway through, Mew suddenly perked its nose up, sniffing at Mammon, then circling him twice, confirming it hadn't misjudged the scent.

"Is that... Ho-Oh's scent? Emm, and Reshiram, and Rayquaza too, myaa — Suicune, Jirachi... wow, you've caught so many amazing ones!"

Mew was utterly astonished — and that was saying something, given how many legendary auras were layered on Mammon. It had genuinely never smelled anything like this before.

"Your nose is really that good, huh — picking all that out." Mammon looked at Mew, quite impressed.

"Heheh~ I go out and explore other places a lot, so I know most of them already," Mew said, a little proud of itself. Staying cooped up in the Tree got unbearably boring, so it wandered around sometimes — which was how it had come to know so many legendary Pokémon. Not that it was necessarily close with all of them — some of them found Mew's total lack of personal space pretty exhausting, honestly — but one way or another, Mew knew practically everyone.

"That's pretty impressive." Mammon raised an eyebrow.

"Hehehe~!" Mew covered its mouth, snickering, then set its little paws proudly on its hips.

"Wait, wait, no — human, can you give me back the three pillars, myaa?" But it snapped back to the actual topic almost immediately, annoyed at itself for getting sidetracked.

"Mew, do you get lonely, usually?"

Mammon didn't answer the question directly. Give the three pillars back to Mew? Of course he would — he'd never intended to just haul them off somewhere else. After all, he was planning to buy up this whole stretch of land around the Tree anyway.

"Emm... yeah, myaa. But humans can't go inside — you'd get eaten, myaa," Mew said, blinking its big, clear eyes and tilting its head.

So cute! Rika couldn't help staring at Mew, eyes sparkling. She'd never imagined the legendary Mythical Pokémon of Kanto could be this adorable and pure. According to the Pokédex, Mew was supposed to be an unbelievably ancient being — some even considered it the ancestor of all Pokémon. Something that had lived so unfathomably long really ought to be extremely mature, shouldn't it?

But talking with it, Mew was obviously a creature with an incredibly innocent heart.

And — its telepathy had a verbal tic! Its little speech quirk was just so cute!

"We won't be going in — but I have a lot of Pokémon I've been raising, and I'd like to leave them here with you, if you'd be willing to keep an eye on them for me," Mammon said, finally getting to his actual point.

That's right — he wanted this Tree-dwelling Mew to become the "caretaker" for the Pokémon his organization kept. Mammon had no idea whether other Mew existed elsewhere in the world, but he knew this particular Mew — the one bonded to the Tree of Beginning — would likely never be able to leave the Tree for the rest of its life. Its fate was tied to the Tree's: they rose together, and they'd fall together. That much had been made explicit in the Aura Guardian movie — this Tree-bound Mew clearly spent most of its time achingly lonely inside the Tree, even though its home would forever remain there.

"Ah? Well, um—"

Mew gnawed its claw again, looking thoroughly conflicted. Housing a bunch of Pokémon wasn't really a problem for the Tree — the interior was massive, after all. But the real question was: if it agreed to this, would this human start coming around here regularly? Mew felt like it shouldn't agree too easily.

"Mew, have you ever tried these?" Mammon, without waiting for an answer, produced some delicious cake and pastries.

"Uhh—" Mew eyed the little cake curiously as it was pressed into its paws. The pink cat took a bite — and its eyes lit up considerably.

"And this." Mammon pulled out a chilled juice box from his bag's cooler compartment, offering the straw up to the pink cat's mouth.

"So good, myaa!!" Mew took a sip, and the icy, refreshing sweetness made its eyes squeeze shut in bliss.

"And then, this." Finally, Mammon pulled out a tablet and pulled up a show — Charizard and His Venusaur Bride.

Sipping juice, nibbling cake and energy bars, all at once — the pink cat looked exactly like a shut-in enjoying a lazy binge session.

"Human, human! I love this stuff, myaa! Love it so much!"

Mew was thrilled. It had actually visited human cities plenty of times before, being able to turn invisible and all — but its nature was so innocent and pure that it had never once snuck a taste of human food, let alone anything as good as Mammon's snacks and juice.

Watching its own "genetic progenitor" get bought off this easily with food and entertainment, Dark Mewtwo's expression stayed completely flat.

"Glad you like it. I can have someone deliver a fresh batch every week — and I'll be buying up this whole area, so my organization's Pokémon can live here. I'll release the three pillars back here too. Mew, would you mind keeping an eye on them and the others for me while they're here? And there are some pretty interesting ones in the mix, too — Zapdos, Therian Landorus, Enamorus, that sort of thing," Mammon coaxed, laying it on smooth.

The Tree of Beginning sat in a genuinely remote stretch — practically the outermost edge of the Kanto mainland — so hardly anyone ever came through here to begin with. Buying up the land would just take the right connections and enough money.

"Eh? Landorus and the others too, myaa?" Mew tilted its head mid-sip, then immediately brightened. "Okay, myaa!! I'll do it!" It nodded eagerly, without a shred of hesitation.

"But, human, you still can't go inside, myaa. If you come by, just have Jirachi call for me, okay, myaa," Mew reminded him.

"Got it, understood. Mew, you can just call me Mammon."

Mammon reached out and gently stroked Mew's cheek — this pink cat really was adorable. And notably, though Mew looked hairless, its skin was actually covered in extremely fine, soft down that felt genuinely pleasant to the touch.

"Mammon~ you're a good person, myaa." Mew's eyes crinkled into a happy smile as it did a little lap around him.

"Mammon, Mammon~ can you send more of this stuff each time, myaa? It runs out so fast." The pink cat pointed hopefully at its now-empty little cake wrapper, the juice box nearly drained too.

"I'll let the delivery guy know — but hey, little one, this stuff's all sweets and treats, you shouldn't overdo it," Mammon said, unable to help a laugh. Mythical Pokémon or not, Mew's constitution was solid, but if it kept downing sweets and juice like this long-term... well, it might actually turn into a couch potato. Though, glancing over Mew's small, slender frame, Mammon figured putting on weight probably wasn't easy for a body built like that anyway.

"Mm-hmm-hmm! Got it, myaa." Mew nodded vigorously, showing it understood.

"Heheh~ so happy, myaa~"

Mew spun happily in several joyful loops, wearing every emotion right out on its sleeve, utterly unguarded — like an innocent child. And it was exactly that openness that made its untainted heart so plain to see. Genuinely, unbearably cute.

Then — "Mammon, Mammon, is this really ugly, black, super rude thing your Pokémon too? Why do I smell a little bit of myself on it, myaa?"

Mew finally drifted close to Mammon's side, asking in a hushed, conspiratorial whisper. It didn't like Dark Mewtwo — that thing was just way too rude. It didn't like it one bit.

Hearing this, Mammon's expression turned subtly, delicately awkward.

Mew had whispered it, technically — but Dark Mewtwo's senses were sharp beyond all reasonable measure.

And right now, the deep violet flames in Dark Mewtwo's eyes were flickering at an absurd, frantic rate, its breathing gone noticeably heavy. Its low telepathic voice sounded like it was straining to hold something back.
