Chapter 32 - Chapter 32 — Things You Don’t Name

Morning came—

But it didn't feel like relief.

It felt like… continuation.

He hadn't slept much.

Not properly.

Every time he closed his eyes—

He saw that space near the window.

That presence.

Not moving.

Not acting.

Just—

Watching.

By the time he stepped outside—

The air already felt different.

Not unstable.

Not broken.

But heavier than yesterday.

Like something had… lingered.

He paused at the gate for a second.

His instinct screamed at him to check.

To look.

To confirm.

But he didn't.

Don't react.

He exhaled slowly—

And walked.

The streets were the same.

People heading to work.

Vendors setting up.

Normal life moving forward.

But now—

He noticed something else.

Small gaps.

Not distortions.

Not fractures.

But… absences.

Tiny ones.

Places where the flow felt slightly thinner.

His chest tightened.

Was that always there…?

He kept walking.

Not focusing.

Not reaching.

But the awareness stayed.

By the time he reached school—

That feeling hadn't gone away.

If anything—

It had sharpened.

He stepped through the gate—

And froze.

Not visibly.

But internally—

Everything stopped.

Because the space near the entrance—

Felt wrong.

Not unstable.

Not broken.

Watched.

His breathing slowed instantly.

It's here too…

Not the exact same presence.

But—

The same type.

Something that didn't belong to the normal flow.

Standing.

Waiting.

He didn't look directly.

Didn't shift his focus.

But he felt it.

And it felt—

Aware.

"…You felt it too."

The voice came from beside him.

Seara.

He didn't turn.

Didn't react outwardly.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"…Don't look at it."

His chest tightened slightly.

"You know what it is?" he asked.

Seara didn't answer immediately.

"…I know what it isn't."

That wasn't comforting.

"It's not a fracture," she continued.

"I figured."

Another pause.

"…And it's not something you're supposed to notice yet."

That again.

Yet.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"So what happens if I do?"

Seara finally turned her head slightly.

Just enough to glance at him.

"…You already did."

Silence.

"…Yeah," he admitted.

They stood there for a few seconds.

Neither moving.

Neither reacting.

The presence near the gate didn't move.

But it didn't leave either.

"…This is bad, isn't it?" he asked quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

He exhaled slowly.

"Worse than the fracture?"

Seara's gaze shifted slightly—

Toward it.

"…Different."

That wasn't better.

"Fractures correct instability," she said.

"They follow rules."

"And this?"

A small pause.

"…Doesn't."

That settled it.

This was worse.

"Then what do we do?" he asked.

Seara didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

She stepped forward.

Not toward the school—

But slightly to the side.

Positioning herself.

Between him—

And it.

"Same thing as before," she said quietly.

"Don't react."

His chest tightened slightly.

"That's it?"

"For now."

They started walking.

Past the gate.

Past it.

The moment they crossed that space—

The pressure shifted.

Not stronger.

Not weaker.

Just—

Focused.

On him.

His breath almost hitched.

But he stopped it.

Forced himself to stay still.

Inside.

No intent.

No awareness spike.

Just—

Neutral.

The presence didn't follow.

But it didn't disappear either.

It stayed at the gate.

Watching.

They entered the building.

Only then—

Did Seara speak again.

"…When did you first feel it?"

"Last night," he replied.

"Where?"

"My room."

That made her stop.

Completely.

Her expression changed.

Not panic.

But—

Concern.

"…Inside your room?" she repeated.

"Yeah."

Silence.

That reaction told him everything.

"…That's not normal, is it?" he asked.

"No."

Again—

No hesitation.

Seara ran a hand through her hair.

"…They don't usually enter personal space."

"They?"

She didn't answer that part.

"…Did it do anything?" she asked instead.

"No."

"…Nothing?"

"It just watched."

That made things worse.

He could see it in her expression.

"…And you didn't react?"

"I almost did."

A small pause.

"But I stopped."

She studied him for a moment.

Then nodded slightly.

"…Good."

But her tone—

Wasn't relaxed.

Not even close.

"…What are they?" he asked again.

This time—

She answered.

"…Don't name them."

That wasn't an answer.

"Seara."

Her gaze sharpened.

"I'm serious."

The tone—

Different.

Not avoidance.

Warning.

"…Why?" he asked quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"Because the moment you define something like that—"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"It becomes easier for it to define you back."

Silence.

That sent a chill down his spine.

"…That doesn't make sense," he said.

"It will," she replied.

They continued walking.

The hallway felt normal again.

Students talking.

Moving.

Laughing.

Unaware.

But now—

He knew.

There were things here—

That didn't follow the same rules.

"…So what do I do if I see it again?" he asked.

Seara didn't stop walking.

"You don't."

"…That's not really an option anymore."

A small pause.

"…Then you pretend you didn't."

That answer lingered.

Because that's what this was now.

Not understanding.

Not controlling.

But surviving—

By ignoring what shouldn't exist.

They reached the classroom.

Before entering—

Seara stopped.

"…Listen carefully."

He did.

"If it appears again—"

Her gaze locked onto his.

"Don't observe it."

A beat.

"Don't think about it."

Another beat.

"And whatever you do—"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"Don't let it know you can feel it."

That last part—

Was the most important.

He nodded slowly.

"…Got it."

Seara held his gaze for a second longer.

Then—

"…Good."

She turned—

And walked inside.

He stood there for a moment.

Processing everything.

Then—

He followed.

But as he stepped into the classroom—

He felt it again.

Faint.

Distant.

Not inside.

But close.

Still at the gate.

Still—

Watching.

And this time—

It felt like it knew—

He had noticed it.3
