Chapter 98 - Chapter 98: An Encounter with the Elite Four

After the protective battle on Murcott Island, Ash and his group took a short rest on a scenic, uninhabited island.

The blue sea, clear sky, and soft sandy beach allowed their weary bodies and minds to fully relax. Their Pokémon also played freely in the calm waters, regaining their energy.

Once they set off again, they arrived at a bustling island called Mandarin Island South.

It seemed to be a transportation hub within the Orange Archipelago, filled with trainers and lively energy.

Not long after stepping onto the island, Ash was challenged by several local trainers in succession.

The current Ash not only had powerful Pokémon, but also rich battle experience and a steady mindset.

Commanding Pikachu, Wartortle, and the others, he handled each battle calmly and secured a series of easy victories.

However, surprisingly, despite his continuous wins, Ash showed no signs of arrogance. After each battle, he would quietly reflect for a moment, sometimes even discussing things softly with Pikachu.

"That Water Pulse just now… if the angle had been slightly different, it might have landed faster…"

"The transition from Pikachu's Quick Attack into Iron Tail could be smoother…"

"Against that kind of defense, maybe using status moves to interfere would work better…"

Ash kept his head lowered in thought. Though he didn't write anything down, he continuously replayed and analyzed the battles in his mind.

"Ash feels different," Misty said softly to Tracey as she watched him deep in thought. "If this were before, he'd be jumping around in excitement after winning so many matches. Now he's calmly reviewing everything."

Tracey adjusted his cap, admiration in his eyes. "Yeah. He's not just chasing victory anymore. He's pursuing perfection in every detail of battle, thinking about how to bring out the full potential of his Pokémon. That kind of composure and drive is truly impressive. No wonder he's the Indigo League Champion."

Their conversation, along with Ash's focused reflection, happened to catch the attention of a woman standing under the shade of a nearby tree.

She had smooth wine-red hair, wore stylish black-framed glasses, and was dressed in a fitted blue jacket over a low-cut red top, paired with a form-fitting black skirt that accentuated her mature and elegant figure.

Her aura was cool and refined, yet her eyes carried intelligence and grace, with a faint smile on her face.

She was none other than Lorelei of the Kanto Elite Four. (Insert Image of Lorelei!)

Lorelei had originally just been passing through, preparing to give a lecture and participate in a demonstration match. By chance, she overheard Misty and Tracey's conversation and noticed the boy who remained calm and thoughtful even after a winning streak.

When she heard the words "Indigo League Champion," her gaze lingered on Ash for a moment longer.

So this was the boy from Pallet Town who had recently risen to fame, reaching the peak right at the start of his journey.

Ash also noticed Lorelei's gaze. The moment he saw her, he immediately recognized the renowned Elite Four member.

He quickly stepped forward and greeted her politely. "Hello, Miss Lorelei! I'm Ash from Pallet Town. It's an honor to meet you here!"

Misty and Tracey also hurried over to greet her respectfully. Misty, in particular, was extremely excited, as Lorelei was her idol.

Lorelei adjusted her glasses, and a faint smile appeared on her cool face, one that was far from distant.

"Hello, Ash. And hello to you two as well. I happened to overhear your conversation and saw your battles. To remain calm after a series of victories and continue reflecting and improving… that's a rare mindset."

Receiving praise from an Elite Four member, Ash scratched his head shyly. "Thank you for the compliment. I still have a long way to go."

Seeing his humility, Lorelei's curiosity about him deepened.

"I happen to have a lecture here on the island, along with a demonstration match against a well-known local trainer. If you're interested, you can come watch."

"Really? That's great!" Ash and the others were both surprised and delighted. Watching an Elite Four member battle in person was a rare learning opportunity.

They followed Lorelei to the stage where she gave her lecture. As one of the most knowledgeable members of the Elite Four, Lorelei's insights into Pokémon attributes and research, while perhaps not matching Professor Oak's depth, were still unique and highly enlightening for Ash.

Her demonstration match was like a work of art. Her Dewgong showcased exquisite control and variation of Ice-type moves, precise and elegant, as if it were performing a dance of ice rather than battling. Although her opponent was also a skilled trainer, he was quickly defeated under Lorelei's overwhelming strength and tactics. The audience erupted into enthusiastic applause.

After the demonstration match, the crowd gradually dispersed.

Ash, however, felt even more fired up after witnessing the battle. Gathering his courage, he walked up to Lorelei, who was resting.

"Miss Lorelei!" Ash's eyes burned with determination and a desire to challenge. "Would you… be willing to battle me? Just one match! I want to personally experience the gap between myself and the Elite Four!"

Looking into Ash's pure and intense fighting spirit, Lorelei seemed to see her younger self.

She smiled slightly. Rather than looking down on him as a newly crowned champion, she admired his courage.

"Alright. However, my Pokémon have just finished a match, so let's make it a one-on-one battle."

"Yes! Thank you very much!" Ash nodded excitedly.

They quickly moved to a nearby battlefield, with Misty and Tracey watching nervously from the side.

"Let's go, Pikachu!"

"Pika!" Pikachu leapt onto the field, electricity crackling from its cheeks, showing no fear even against an Elite Four member.

Lorelei gracefully tossed out a Poké Ball. "Then I'll use this one… Cloyster."

A Cloyster appeared on the field, its hard shell gleaming with a cold sheen. Its shell was tightly shut, leaving only a narrow gap through which its calm eyes could be seen.

"Battle start!" Tracey volunteered to act as the referee.

"Pikachu, Quick Attack!" Ash launched the first move, trying to seize the initiative.

Pikachu turned into a streak of white light and rushed toward Cloyster.

"Cloyster, Withdraw," Lorelei calmly ordered.

Cloyster instantly shut its shell, greatly boosting its defense. Pikachu's Quick Attack slammed into the hard shell, but the effect was minimal.

"Now, Pikachu, use Electro Ball continuously!" Ash immediately changed tactics, trying to find an opening with ranged attacks.

Pikachu leapt back and rapidly formed electric spheres, firing them at Cloyster.

Cloyster suddenly opened its shell and began spinning at high speed, like a rotating shield, deflecting and shattering the incoming Electro Balls.

"Such incredible defense and response!" Misty exclaimed.

"Miss Lorelei's timing is flawless," Tracey noted as he recorded everything.

"Pikachu, don't stop, use Double Team to confuse it!" Seeing brute force wouldn't work, Ash switched to strategy.

In an instant, over a dozen Pikachu clones appeared, surrounding Cloyster.

"That kind of interference won't work on Cloyster," Lorelei said with a slight smile. "Cloyster, Whirlpool!"

Cloyster stopped spinning, and a swirling current surged from its shell, rapidly expanding into a massive vortex!

Whirlpool was not only offensive but also a wide-area move. It instantly dispersed all the clones, leaving the real Pikachu exposed.

"Pikachu, jump to avoid it! Then use Iron Tail on the water's surface and use the recoil to get close!" Ash reacted quickly.

Pikachu nimbly leapt into the air, avoiding the Whirlpool. Its tail glowed with a metallic sheen as it struck the water, using the recoil to launch itself like a cannon toward Cloyster.

"Nice idea!"

Just as Pikachu's Iron Tail was about to land, a green barrier suddenly appeared in front of Cloyster, completely blocking the attack.

"Now, Pikachu, Thunderbolt!" Ash seized the brief moment of stiffness after Cloyster used Protect.

At such close range, there was no way to dodge. Golden lightning engulfed Cloyster instantly.

"It hit!" Misty cheered.

However, when the light faded, Cloyster was still standing. Though its body bore scorch marks and its shell showed slight cracks, its endurance was astonishing.

"Cloyster, one last move, use Icicle Spear!" Lorelei commanded.

Enduring the lingering paralysis from the electric shock, Cloyster fired countless sharp icicles from the gap in its shell, raining down on Pikachu like a storm.

"Pikachu, use Electroweb for defense!"

Midair, Pikachu quickly spread an electric net. Most of the icicles were blocked with crackling sounds, but a few pierced through and struck Pikachu. Pikachu fell from the sky and crashed heavily onto the ground.

As the dust settled, both Pikachu and Cloyster struggled to stand, but in the end, neither could continue.

"Pikachu and Cloyster have both lost the ability to battle! This match is a draw!" Tracey announced loudly.

Ash and Lorelei both stepped forward.

"Good job, Pikachu." Ash gently picked up his exhausted partner.

"You did well too, Cloyster. That was a fine battle," Lorelei said as she recalled her Pokémon.

She looked at Ash, her eyes filled with undisguised admiration. "That was an excellent battle, Ash. Your command, adaptability, and coordination with Pikachu all exceeded my expectations. No wonder you became the Indigo League Champion."

"Thank you, Miss Lorelei!" Ash replied excitedly. "Your defensive play and battle rhythm taught me a lot!"

During their conversation afterward, Ash didn't just talk about battling. He also shared some of his observations on Water-type Pokémon ecology and even offered unique insights into how Ice-type moves could be used in different environments. Though some of his ideas were still a bit immature, his keen observation and depth of thought once again surprised Lorelei.

This boy was not only powerful and composed, but also highly talented in his understanding of Pokémon.

As Lorelei watched him speak earnestly, listening to his passionate and thoughtful words, a subtle softness appeared in her usually cool eyes, one she didn't even realize herself.

Toward this boy named Ash, she developed a faint, delicate fondness that went beyond simple admiration from a senior to a junior. That feeling quietly began to grow.

When it was time to part, Lorelei smiled and said, "I look forward to seeing an even more impressive performance from you in future League competitions."

"I'll definitely keep working harder, Miss Lorelei!" Ash nodded firmly.

Carrying with him the valuable experience of battling an Elite Four member and an indescribable sense of encouragement, Ash and his group left Mandarin Island South.

Lorelei remained where she was, watching the direction they departed for a long time, a faint smile lingering on her lips.

"What an… interesting boy."

For now, this budding connection with Lorelei would remain just a hint, to be developed further someday.
