Chapter 1 - The Signature That Changed Everything

The rain was falling hard that morning.

Not the soft kind that made everything look romantic in movies—but the kind that made uniforms stick to skin, shoes sink into wet ground, and moods turn bitter.

Ava Moretti tightened her worn-out school bag against her shoulder and hurried across the school gate.

"Late again," the gatekeeper muttered.

"I had to help my aunt," Ava replied quickly, not slowing down.

No one argued with her. Not because they respected her—but because she was invisible enough not to matter.

At Crestwood Elite Academy, invisibility was survival.

Gold gates. Marble floors. Students who wore confidence like perfume.

And Ava?

She wore borrowed hope.

Inside Crestwood Elite Academy

Whispers followed her as she walked down the hallway.

"Isn't that the scholarship girl?" "She still wears that old bag…" "Does she even belong here?"

Ava kept her eyes forward.

She had learned something important:

If you don't look at them, they can't fully break you.

But today felt different.

There was a strange energy in the school.

Phones were out. Students were gathering near notice boards. Excited murmurs echoed everywhere.

Something big had happened.

Ava didn't care.

She just needed to get to class.

The Office Detour

"Miss Moretti!"

A sharp voice stopped her.

It was Mrs. Daniels, the school administrator.

"You're late for attendance records. Come with me."

Ava sighed quietly. "I'll miss first period."

"You'll survive."

That was the Crestwood way.

People like her always "survived."

The office was unusually busy.

Stacks of files. Open laptops. Guards at the door.

Ava frowned. "Why is security here?"

Mrs. Daniels didn't answer. She just placed a folder in front of her.

"Sign this."

A pen was already waiting.

Ava blinked. "What is it?"

"Administrative agreement. Just sign it."

She frowned deeper. "Why me?"

Mrs. Daniels didn't look at her. "You're on scholarship. You agreed to school policies."

That didn't sound right.

But Ava was tired.

Tired of arguing. Tired of being late. Tired of being watched like she didn't belong.

So she took the pen.

And signed.

The moment the pen left the paper, the door behind her opened.

The room went silent.

Even the air felt heavier.

Ava turned.

And froze.

He Walked In

He didn't walk like a normal student.

He walked like the world made space for him.

Tall. Calm. Controlled.

Black uniform perfectly fitted, silver chain subtly visible at his collar. Dark hair slightly messy—but in a way that looked intentional.

And his eyes—

Cold. Sharp. Uninterested.

The kind of eyes that made people lower their heads without realizing.

Whispers exploded instantly.

"It's him…" "Lucian Vale is here…" "Why is he in the admin office?"

Ava had heard the name before.

Everyone had.

Lucian Vale.

Heir to the Vale empire.

Top student.

Top fighter in rumors no one confirmed.

And the most untouchable person in Crestwood Elite Academy.

He didn't look at anyone.

Except the folder in front of Ava.

The Mistake

Mrs. Daniels suddenly panicked.

"No—Miss Moretti, you weren't supposed to sign that yet—"

Ava frowned. "What do you mean not supposed—"

Lucian's voice cut through the room.

Low. Calm. Dangerous.

"Too late."

Silence dropped instantly.

Ava's heart skipped.

"What?"

Lucian finally looked at her.

Really looked.

And for the first time, she felt something unsettling.

Like being measured.

Not seen.

Measured.

"You signed it," he said.

Ava looked at the paper.

Her signature.

Her name.

At the bottom of a document she didn't read.

Her stomach tightened.

"What is this?" she asked slowly.

Mrs. Daniels looked like she wanted to disappear.

Lucian stepped closer.

Each step made the room feel smaller.

"Contract agreement," he said.

Ava blinked. "Contract…?"

Lucian's gaze didn't move.

"Six months."

Her breath caught. "Six months of what?"

A pause.

Then he said it.

"Being my girlfriend."

The Room Went Dead Silent

Ava stared at him.

Then the paper.

Then him again.

"…Excuse me?"

Someone behind her dropped a pen.

Mrs. Daniels looked like she was about to faint.

Lucian didn't change expression.

"It's binding," he added.

Ava suddenly laughed once—sharp and disbelieving.

"You're joking."

"I don't joke," he replied.

Her laugh died instantly.

The room felt too small. Too hot.

"This is insane," Ava said. "I didn't even read it!"

"You signed it."

"That doesn't mean—"

"It does," he interrupted calmly.

Ava's hands clenched.

"I can cancel it."

"You can't."

"Watch me."

Lucian tilted his head slightly.

And for the first time, something almost like curiosity flickered in his eyes.

"Try," he said softly.

That single word made something in her chest tighten.

The Truth Drops

Mrs. Daniels finally spoke, voice shaking.

"Miss Moretti… the contract is part of a school executive agreement between your scholarship and the Vale Foundation."

Ava turned sharply.

"What foundation?"

Lucian answered.

"Mine."

Everything stopped.

Ava felt the floor shift under her.

"You're saying…" she whispered, "my scholarship… is tied to this?"

Lucian nodded once.

"Six months. No refusal. No cancellation."

A beat.

Then he added:

"Or it ends."

Ava went still.

Her scholarship.

Her only way to stay in Crestwood.

Her future.

The Trap Closes

Ava's voice came out low.

"So this was planned."

Lucian didn't deny it.

That silence was answer enough.

Ava felt anger rise slowly—burning through embarrassment, confusion, disbelief.

"You didn't even tell me what I was signing."

"You wouldn't have signed if I did," he replied.

That hit harder than it should have.

Ava stepped forward.

"You think you can just control people like this?"

Lucian looked at her calmly.

"I don't think."

A pause.

"I decide."

The air between them changed.

Something invisible.

Something sharp.

A challenge.

Ava held his gaze.

For the first time in that school, she didn't look away.

"You picked the wrong person," she said quietly.

A flicker.

Just a flicker.

In his eyes.

Interest.

The Final Shock

Lucian stepped closer again.

Now they were only a few feet apart.

Close enough for her to see the faint scar near his jaw.

Close enough for him to hear her breathing.

"You don't have a choice," he said.

Ava smiled suddenly.

Not sweet.

Not friendly.

Dangerously calm.

"Oh," she said softly.

"I always have a choice."

The room went silent again.

Even Lucian paused for a fraction of a second.

Ava picked up the contract.

Slowly.

Looked at her signature.

Then looked at him.

And tore the corner slightly—not enough to break it.

Just enough to show defiance.

"Six months, right?" she said.

Lucian watched her carefully.

"Yes."

Ava stepped back.

Her eyes burned with something new.

"Then you better be ready," she said.

Because I'm not going to be your girlfriend.

I'm going to be your problem."

Outside the Office

When Ava walked out of the office, the hallway felt different.

Whispers followed her again—but louder this time.

"Why was she with Lucian Vale?" "What happened inside?" "Did she get expelled?"

Ava didn't care anymore.

Because behind her, the most powerful student in Crestwood Elite Academy was still standing in that office.

Watching her leave.

And for the first time in a long time…

Lucian Vale smiled.

Just slightly.

Not warmth.

Not kindness.

Interest.
