The man known as Mutt sighed and took a step back.
Who wouldn't want all these supplies for themselves? If not, they wouldn't have just fought so fiercely.
But they had been fighting for so long, and neither side could gain the upper hand.
No one wanted to get serious, each holding back, not wanting to give an opening for others to exploit. But the more they did this, the deeper they fell into a stalemate.
If they kept fighting like this, they feared they'd end up with no supplies, completely exhausted. Even without casualties, this was a bad outcome for them.
Besides, if they made too much of a commotion, they would inevitably attract the attention of others. They couldn't let someone else take advantage of the situation and wipe them all out.
Then they would get nothing for all their trouble.
It was better to take a step back and split the goods. They'd all get a decent share that way, and they could avoid casualties.
