Chapter 3 - The Blood That Shouldn’t Exist

For one second—

Everything stopped.

Kael's grip loosened.

Just enough.

And that was all I needed.

The power surged again.

Violent.

Unstable.

Unforgiving.

I didn't think.

I didn't plan.

I just reacted.

A pulse exploded from my body.

Not outward this time—

But directly into him.

Kael was thrown back.

Not far.

Not weakly.

No.

He slid across the ground like something had forced him away.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Impossible.

The wolves didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't even dare whisper.

Because what just happened—

Wasn't supposed to happen.

I staggered back, my chest rising and falling rapidly.

"What… am I…?"

My voice barely came out.

My hands trembled.

But not from fear.

From something else.

Something growing.

Something awakening.

Kael stood.

Slowly.

Too calmly.

His eyes never left me.

And now—

There was no doubt.

He wasn't looking at me like prey anymore.

He was looking at me like a threat.

"What are you?" he repeated.

But this time—

There was something else in his voice.

Something darker.

Something closer to… curiosity.

The kind that comes before possession.

"I told you," I said, forcing the words out. "I don't know."

A lie?

No.

Not exactly.

Because deep down…

Something inside me did know.

It just hadn't spoken yet.

"Liar."

The word was soft.

Almost amused.

Kael took a step forward.

Then another.

Slower this time.

Measured.

Like he was approaching something dangerous—

But worth the risk.

"You break a bond and survive."

Another step.

"You release power without shifting."

Another.

"You resist Alpha command."

He stopped.

Right in front of me again.

"And you expect me to believe you don't know what you are?"

My throat tightened.

I had no answer.

Because every word he said—

Was true.

And none of it made sense.

"I should kill you."

The sentence came calmly.

Too calmly.

The wolves behind him tensed.

Some nodded.

Others looked uncertain.

Fear lingered in the air.

But Kael—

He wasn't decided.

Not yet.

"You won't."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Silence.

Dangerous silence.

His eyes darkened.

"And why is that?"

My heart pounded.

Because I don't think you want to.

Because something in you recognizes me.

Because you're not done with me yet.

But I didn't say any of that.

Instead, I said the only thing I was sure of.

"Because you don't understand me yet."

That—

That hit.

I saw it.

A flicker.

A shift.

Interest.

And that was worse than anger.

Much worse.

Because anger kills.

Interest keeps you alive.

But not free.

"Take her."

The command snapped through the air.

My body tensed.

"No—"

This time I didn't run.

I couldn't.

Not with him watching.

Not with that presence pressing down on everything.

Two wolves approached again.

Slower now.

Careful.

Like I was something that could explode.

Maybe I was.

I stepped back.

Once.

Twice.

The mark burned.

Warning.

"Don't touch me," I said.

My voice came out lower.

Different.

And the wolves hesitated.

Kael noticed.

Of course he did.

His lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something sharper.

"Interesting."

He moved again.

Closer.

Too close.

And before I could react—

His hand grabbed my wrist.

The contact—

It wasn't like before.

It wasn't force.

It wasn't domination.

It was something else.

Something that made my breath hitch.

The mark flared violently.

And then—

Pain.

Sharp.

Explosive.

I gasped.

My body arched.

And Kael froze.

For the first time—

He looked shocked.

Because where his fingers touched my skin—

The veins beneath it glowed.

Dark.

Not red.

Not silver.

Black.

Alive.

Moving.

"What the hell…"

His voice dropped.

Not controlled anymore.

Not calm.

Real.

For the first time—

He didn't understand.

Good.

Because neither did I.

The voice returned.

Stronger now.

Clearer.

"Finally…"

I shut my eyes tight.

No.

No, no, no—

"Stop…"

But it didn't.

"You feel it now, don't you?"

My breath came out uneven.

"What are you…?"

"You already know."

The whisper curled around my mind.

Possessive.

Ancient.

"You are not theirs."

My heart pounded.

"You are not weak."

The mark burned brighter.

"You were never meant to bow."

My eyes snapped open.

And something—

Something inside me shifted.

The fear—

Faded.

Replaced by something colder.

Stronger.

I looked at Kael.

Really looked.

And for the first time—

I didn't feel small.

I didn't feel broken.

I didn't feel rejected.

I felt…

Equal.

No.

Something more dangerous.

"I'm not staying here," I said.

My voice was steady now.

Too steady.

Kael's grip tightened slightly.

Not enough to hurt.

Enough to remind.

"You don't have a choice."

The old fear should have returned.

It didn't.

Instead—

I leaned closer.

Just slightly.

Enough for only him to hear.

"Then make me."

The air snapped.

The wolves behind him shifted uneasily.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kael stared at me.

Longer this time.

Deeper.

As if trying to see through me.

Through whatever I was becoming.

And then—

Slowly—

He smiled.

Not warm.

Not kind.

Dangerous.

"Fine."

The word dropped like a blade.

"Let's see how far you can go before you break."

My pulse quickened.

But I didn't look away.

I wouldn't.

Not anymore.

"Take her to the palace."

The command echoed.

This time—

No one hesitated.

They moved fast.

Efficient.

Prepared.

And this time—

I didn't fight.

Not physically.

Because something told me—

Running now wouldn't change anything.

But staying…

That might.

As they escorted me through the forest, deeper into territory I had never been allowed to enter…

One thought repeated in my mind.

Over and over again.

This isn't the end.

This is the beginning.

Because whatever I was—

Whatever I was becoming—

It scared them.

Even him.

And that meant one thing.

Power.

Real power.

The kind that changes everything.

The kind that destroys kings.

Or crowns them.

And as the gates of the Alpha's domain rose in front of me—

Massive.

Imposing.

Unforgiving—

The voice whispered one last time.

Soft.

Satisfied.

"Now the game begins."
