Chapter 7 - The Truth They Tried to Bury

The silence after Darius left was suffocating.

Not empty.

Heavy.

Like something unseen had entered the room with him… and refused to leave.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Even the guards at the door looked uncertain now.

Good.

They should be.

Because for the first time—

They didn't understand what they were dealing with.

Neither did I.

But I was getting closer.

I could feel it.

The mark pulsed again.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Aware.

"You feel it, don't you?"

The voice.

Clearer than ever now.

Almost… present.

I closed my eyes briefly.

"What am I?"

This time—

It didn't laugh.

It didn't mock.

It answered.

"Something they tried to erase."

My breath caught.

Erase?

"What does that mean?"

Silence.

Then—

"You were never meant to exist."

My eyes snapped open.

Cold spread through my chest.

That didn't make sense.

Or maybe—

It made too much.

"Lyra."

Kael's voice cut through my thoughts.

Sharp.

Controlled.

But not calm.

Not anymore.

I looked at him.

Really looked.

And what I saw—

Was different.

He wasn't just watching me.

He was studying.

Analyzing.

Calculating.

Like I had become something he couldn't ignore.

Something he couldn't afford to lose control over.

"From now on," he said slowly, "you don't leave this palace without me."

There it was.

Not protection.

Control.

Possession.

I crossed my arms.

"And if I do?"

His eyes darkened.

"Then I'll remind you why that's a mistake."

A threat.

Clear.

Simple.

But I didn't react the way he expected.

Instead—

I smiled.

Just slightly.

"You're afraid."

The words landed.

Hard.

Silence followed.

The kind that doesn't need confirmation.

Because it's already true.

Kael stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

Dangerous.

"I don't fear things I can break."

My pulse quickened.

"Then why haven't you?"

That—

That hit deeper.

His jaw tightened.

For a second—

Just a second—

He didn't have an answer.

Good.

Because I did.

"You can't," I said softly.

"Because you don't understand me."

The mark burned.

Stronger.

Responsive.

Like it agreed.

Kael's gaze dropped to my neck.

Then back to my eyes.

And something in him shifted again.

Something darker.

"You think that makes you untouchable?"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Rougher.

"No," I said.

"It makes me dangerous."

Silence.

Again.

But this time—

It wasn't empty.

It was charged.

Alive.

Explosive.

And right in the middle of it—

The doors opened again.

No knock.

No warning.

Just presence.

Darius.

Of course.

He leaned casually against the doorway, as if he owned the place.

Or at least—

Didn't care who did.

"Still alive, I see."

Kael didn't even turn.

"Leave."

Simple.

Direct.

Final.

Darius smiled.

Ignored him.

As expected.

"I thought about what I saw," he said, stepping inside slowly.

His eyes locked onto me instantly.

Not Kael.

Never Kael.

Always me.

"And I realized something."

My body tensed.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

That same pull.

That same strange connection.

The mark reacted.

Warm.

Curious.

Alive.

"What?" I asked.

Darius stopped a few steps away.

Close enough to feel.

Far enough to stay out of reach.

"For someone who doesn't know what she is…"

He tilted his head slightly.

"…you're adapting very quickly."

Kael stepped forward immediately.

Blocking him.

Enough.

"She's not your concern."

Darius raised an eyebrow.

"Everything unusual is my concern."

A pause.

Then—

He looked past Kael again.

Directly at me.

"You feel it, don't you?"

My breath hitched.

"What?"

"That something inside you…"

His voice lowered.

"…is waking up."

Silence.

Because that—

That was the truth.

And he knew it.

"How do you know that?" I asked.

Darius smiled.

Slow.

Knowing.

"Because I felt it too."

My heart skipped.

No.

That wasn't possible.

"Not the same," he added, watching my reaction carefully.

"But close enough to recognize it."

Kael's patience snapped.

He grabbed Darius again.

This time harder.

More aggressive.

"You're pushing too far."

Darius didn't resist.

Didn't fight.

Didn't even seem bothered.

Instead—

He spoke calmly.

Right in Kael's face.

"You brought something ancient into your territory."

A pause.

"And you still think you're in control."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because for the first time—

Kael didn't respond immediately.

That was enough.

Darius stepped back on his own.

Freeing himself.

Unbothered.

"You should ask your elders," he said, turning slightly toward the door.

"They know."

My chest tightened.

"Know what?"

He stopped.

Half-turned.

And for a moment—

Something in his expression changed.

Less mocking.

More serious.

More… real.

"What you are."

A pause.

"And why you shouldn't exist."

The words hit like a blade.

Sharp.

Precise.

Unavoidable.

Then—

He left.

Just like that.

Again.

Leaving behind silence.

And something worse—

Truth.

Or at least—

Pieces of it.

I looked at Kael.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"Is it true?"

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

My pulse quickened.

"They know what I am."

Still nothing.

My chest tightened.

"You knew."

Now—

He reacted.

Subtle.

But real.

That flicker.

That hesitation.

That moment of truth slipping through control.

And that—

That told me everything.

"You knew," I repeated.

This time—

Colder.

Sharper.

More dangerous.

Kael exhaled slowly.

Then finally—

He spoke.

Low.

Measured.

Careful.

"I knew something like you existed."

My blood ran cold.

"Something like me?"

His eyes locked onto mine.

And for the first time—

There was no control.

No dominance.

No certainty.

Only tension.

Only truth.

Only something dangerously close to concern.

"A bloodline that was erased."

The room felt smaller.

Tighter.

"Why?"

My voice dropped.

Barely above a whisper.

Kael didn't look away.

"Because it couldn't be controlled."

Silence.

Absolute.

Because now—

Everything made sense.

The mark.

The power.

The voice.

The fear.

All of it.

I swallowed hard.

"And now?"

A pause.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael stepped closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"And now…"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Rougher.

"I decide what happens to you."

The words were clear.

Final.

Deadly.

But instead of fear—

Something else rose.

Something stronger.

Something darker.

Something that matched him.

I smiled.

Slow.

Cold.

"And what if…"

I took a step closer.

Closing the distance.

Matching him.

"…you're not the one in control anymore?"

The air snapped.

The mark burned.

And for the first time—

Kael didn't respond.

Because now—

He wasn't sure.
