Phoebe Faulkner hadn't seen Jace Lennox change his clothes. It wasn't until he left the room, closed the door, and tossed out, "Wait for me at home," that Phoebe finally came to her senses.
Phoebe didn't know where Jace had gone.
She stayed in the room alone, sitting on Jace Lennox's bed. The more she thought about it, the more something felt wrong.

Phoebe remained in the room, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts until her head throbbed. Utterly dizzy and overwhelmed, she fell onto the bed and drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up the next day, she was still alone in Jace Lennox's bed.
Phoebe opened her eyes and scanned the room. There was no sign of Jace Lennox. Not a trace of his presence lingered in the air. The room was empty. It was obvious he hadn't come back last night.
Phoebe thought about what she had agreed to the night before, and it still felt like a dream.
She had agreed to be Jace Lennox's surrogate.
