Meanwhile.
On the second-floor landing.
Sylvia Sterling leaned against the wall, overhearing every word of the conversation between Mr. Sterling and Jude Langley.
The conversation downstairs continued.
Sylvia stared down at her feet, lost in thought.
After a few minutes, she turned with a neutral expression and headed toward her sister's room.
Just then, the maid who had gone upstairs to get Stella Sterling opened the door.
Seeing Sylvia, she greeted her, "Miss Sterling."
"Where's Stella?"
Sylvia asked, her expression unchanged.
The maid hurriedly replied, "I can't wake Second Miss. I think she has a fever."
"Hm?" Sylvia frowned. "I'll go in and see. Call Dr. Wallace and ask him to come over."
Stella Sterling was sick.
Days of running around, irregular meals, and spending a long time in the evening breeze on The Embankment had caused her to catch a severe cold, and her high fever wouldn't break.
